Chapter 67: new hunters
Ayla had just finished serving the morning meal to her family. She then looked around her mate’s hearth and sighed. She’d planned to stop at 3 children. But when she met Dyondar, she couldn’t resist the chance to recreate Mariza. Now she had 8 children at her mate’s hearth. This was like her previous life when she had too many children, just because she could. It made her really grateful for her sister, Abba’s help at this hearth. And Durciza and Ura were old enough to help out too. But with this many, she had to put them to work helping her tend the magical garden, brewing potions and gathering plants. She decided it was time to dig into more of those seeds that were in Luna’s trunk, to plant some of the food crops that were not magical and see what maize and tomatoes and pumpkins taste like. But if she didn’t want the animals to eat the crops, she’d need a barrier of charged rune stones around them. Now that she thought on it, if she used Pleasures to charge them instead of her wand, that could be quite enjoyable. It would, after all, be a lot of stones that need charging.
With their magically enhanced skill at hunting, it was not yet summer when the Clan had stored enough meat for the winter. After that, people went hunting alone or in small groups to hunt for fresh meat.
Now the Clan was focused on gathering the plant portion of their diet. This was found with a combination of the crops Ayla was growing and gathering wild plants led by Iza. Harr and Thonlan helped with this, which inspired some of the 1/2 Clan boys who were not as locked into Clan memories to help.
Ura and Durciza had frozen in place. They didn’t want to scare the rabbit away. When it looked away for a second, Ura loaded her sling. It looked back at her and Ura froze again. When it looked away again, Ura started spinning her sling, winding up to cast. The rabbit started running. Ura released the stone and it hit the rabbit, stunning it. Durciza raced forward and picked up the rabbit by the ears. This revived it. But being lifted by it’s ears, calmed it down. Ura stepped up to Durciza and cut the rabbit’s throat with her knife. While it was bleeding out, Durciza dropped it so she could sign to Ura:
“You did it, Ura! You made your first kill! Now you can become a woman-who-hunts!”
“If this girl ever becomes a woman,” signed Ura.
“Mama thinks it will happen to us soon,” signed Durciza.
“And then we’ll get mates,” signed Ura.
“Not until after we have 1st Rites,” signed Durciza. “Who do you want yours to be?”
“This girl want’s Brun for her 1st Rites,” signed Ura.
“Brun . . . Eew! He’s so old!” signed Durciza. “This girl wants Thonlan for her 1st Rites. He’s so handsome for a man of the Others.”
“If you have him for 1st Rites, you won’t be able to Share Pleasures with him again for a year,” signed Ura.
“That’s like forever!” signed Durciza. “Who do you think you will be mated to?”
“Well, the only boy getting redfooted is Lun,” signed Ura. “So one of us will be mated to him. This girl guesses that the other one of us will end up being some man’s 2nd mate.”
“If that happened to this girl, she would want to be the Leader’s second mate,” signed Durciza.
“Want to practice kissing?” signed Ura.
“Sure, why not?” Durciza signed, before pulling Ura into a kiss.
After the girls finished experimenting, they got back to their feet.
“Do you think it is like that with Uba and Lun?” Durciza asked. “Does Lun do all that to Uba?”
“This girl is certain that Uba as teaching him to do that, just like Harr does before he Relieves his Need in Mama.” signed Ura.
“This girl sees why she likes it so much now,” signed Durciza. “This girl supposes we should take the rabbit back and show the Clan that you can hunt.”
Summer came and some of the earliest crops began to get harvested. For Lun, one of the things to get harvested was Uba, as she was now Sharing herself completely with her. Based on how she acted during this, he seemed to have learned his lessons from her well. By later summer, she declared him competent and that she was no longer his redfoot. Now he had no one to Relieve his Needs. So he focused harder on training with running, running and thrusting with a Clan spear, and using Sling magic.
Lun and Ayla crept up on the woolly rhino. They had spotted it some distance away, and there were still very far from it. But they were close enough for sling magic. Ayla loaded her sling and held a second stone in her other hand, while Luna loaded his. They both started spinning their slings, winding up for the cast. Ayla let him cast first.
KRACK!
Lun cast his stone and the rhino went down.
“This boy did it! This boy killed a large animal with Sling magic! This boy is now a man!”
Ayla kept winding up. Wooly rhinos have been known to attack after they were mortally wounded. But when she was certain that it was actually dead, she stopped making it spin and wind down.
“Yes you did make the kill,” signed Ayla. “This woman-who-hunts is proud of you!”
They ran over to where the rhino lay and Ayla watched as he cut the heart out and buried it, before cutting a piece of the liver off for each of them. Lun was smiling as he chewed the liver, it was the sweetest meat he had ever tasted. Making this kill made him feel so good that . . . Lun had a suddenly realization. Killing a large animal, made him a man. And if he was a man . . .”
“Ayla?” signed Lun, before giving her the Signal.
Ayla shook her head at him.
“This boy is a man now! He has killed a large animal. That makes him a man!”
“You are not yet a man,” signed Ayla. “The mog-ur has to perform the ceremony before you are a Hunter of the Clan and a man.”
“But this boy killed a large animal!” signed Lun.
Ayla looked at him seriously as he squirmed. The rules said he wasn’t a man until he killed a large animal with a Clan spear and had a ceremony to make him one. But she could see his Need.
“Refrain from mentioning this to anyone,” signed Ayla, before turning away, kneeling and presenting.
“Lun knelt behind her and lifted her wrap. His Clan memories told him this was the way to relieve his need. But Uba’s lessons made him say:
“No. Turn around. This bo- man wants to Share Pleasures with your the way Uba taught him.”
After they were done, and had gotten dressed again, Ayla pulled out her sling and drove off the hyenas that were starting to approach. She then levitated the wooly rhino.
“Wingardium Leviosa!”
They walked back to the Cave with Luna leading and Ayla carrying the rhino carcass. When they got back to the cave, Ayla set it down.
“Ayla, who killed that rhino?” Creb signed.
“Lun killed that rhino, Creb,” signed Ayla. “He used sling magic to make the kill.”
Creb turned to Lun.
“Traditionally, a boy must make the kill with a Clan spear to become a man,” signed Creb. “But we no longer have enough men to run down an animal . . . . This Leader will let this be your manhood hunt. Tonight we will perform the hunting dance and make you a man. But there is not currently a woman for you to mate. Perhaps one of the men with two mates would be willing to give one to you? This leader will speak to them.”
“There are the two girls, Durciza and Ura,” signed Ayla. “This Medicine Woman thinks that they may become women in the next year.”
“That may be so,” signed Creb. “But they are not women yet. And none of the new matings have been formalized yet. Lun has become a man sooner than expected.”
Throughout the afternoon, Creb spoke with the various men in the Clan and their 2nd mates. While he did this, the women processed the rhino saved some fresh meat for tonight’s feast.
When evening came, the Hunting Dance was performed, reenacting Lun’s first hunt. Then, Creb performed the ceremony to make Lun a man. After which, he made an announcement:
“Normally, a new man would be given a mate. In recent years we have not been able to do this because we didn’t have enough women for every man to have his own mate. Now that we do, we have too few people to let any of us go into mating isolation.
After speaking with the men with two mates and their 2nd mates, Abba has agreed to become Lun’s mate this winter. For now, they will share a hearth and act as if they are already mated.”
Durciza and Ura were heartbroken at this announcement.
