Chapter 68: pairings

Autumn arrived and it was time to harvest the crops that they had planted the year before. Once she had harvested them, Ayla had look through Luna’s muggle studies books to help her figure out how to cook these strange new plants like: yams, okra, and beans.

The Clan’s diet had suddenly become much more interesting.

When it became clear that there was little plants left to gather and winter was coming. Creb called the Clan together.

“The first winter storm is coming, so it is now time for the matings,” signed Creb. “We will take turns getting mated and going into mating isolation. Thonlan’s mating to Vara and Iga will be first. After they come out of isolation, Luna and Abba will be next. This Leader and his mating to Uba will be last. We will perform Thonlan’s mating to Vara and Iga at sunset. Prepare yourselves.”

The whole Clan prepared a for the mating ceremony. When it was time, Thonlan came to the center of the cave dressed in a new wrap. Then, Vora and Iga came forward holding hands. Vora was wearing a new wrap. While Iga was wearing one of the skirts that Luna had packed in her trunk before Harr brought it from the future.

Creb performed the Ceremony in his Cave Bear cloak. He painted the symbols of their totems on their bare chests, then painted Thonlan’s Cave Lion over the women’s totem symbol. The women then, sat at his feet. He tapped them on the shoulder and they followed him to their hearth. While they were in their mating isolation, Ayla would take care of Iga’s son, Oud.

Abba was visibly pregnant by the time she mated Lun. And her baby girl was born before winter ended. She was named Ida.

During Creb and Uba’s isolation, Iza and Viza moved to Harr’s hearth. But after the first night, dzini was returned to Uba for the rest of their isolation. Before their mating, Ayla had made Uba a generous supply of polyjuice potion in individual flasks. This allowed her to turn into Luna every time Creb gave her the Signal, or even when she wanted him to give her the Signal. But often the potion would wear off before they were finished Sharing Pleasures.
On their last night of isolation, after Uba had fed Creb and herself their evening meal, nursed dzini and put her down to sleep, Creb gave her the Signal. Uba reached for a vial of polyjuice potion, but Creb stopped her.

“You don’t need that,” signed Creb.

“Really?” Uba signed.

“This time, let this man Share Pleasures with Uba,” signed Creb.

After they were finished and were cuddling, Uba looked back at him and signed:

“This woman enjoyed Sharing with you as Uba, but thinks she likes it better when she is Luna.”

“This man thinks so too,” signed Creb. “This man especially likes the sounds you make as Luna.”

“This woman feels freer to make those sounds as Luna,” signed Uba.

“Iga thinks those sounds are an invitation for anyone who hears to join her for group Pleasures,” signed Creb.

“Well, she’s right about this woman,” signed Uba. “This woman wouldn’t mind it others joined us when she is making those sounds.”

Winter was a time for learning. Iga was teaching everyone the Sungaean language. Those who were completely Clan could not make the sounds, but they still found it easier than the Others to learn to understand it. Those that were part Clan had varying degrees of success learning to speak it. Some of the part Clan people had the same Clan difficulty making certain sounds. Those same people tended to have better Clan memories that the ones you could more easily make mouth sounds of all types.

It was also time for teaching magic. Durciza was already into the 2nd year material. Now there were organized classes of 1st year magic for Abba and Lun.
Harr was teaching Charms and Defense, while Uba was teaching Charms and Astronomy. Ayla was teaching Herbalogy and Potions, which she had already started last spring. The decided not to teach magical history as it would be irrelevant predictions of what might happen in the distance future.

Ayla was also teaching Durciza and Ura how to be medicine women.
Abba was already a medicine woman in her own right. She found the magical Herbalogy and Potions lessons came easily for her. But being fully Clan, Abba found shouting incantations impossible. She had to learn to use her wand silently, which was more difficult, even more so for a woman of the Clan. She also found Reading and math to be too abstract for her to learn. Ayla had seen this before in her past life when Maeba had lost use of her wand after she was transfigures into a Clan woman.

In addition to magic, to prepare the younger children, they were were being taught to read, write and do math. These lessons were open to anyone else who wanted to learn them. But people who were too Clan found it impossible to pick up this knowledge for the same reasons that Abba had trouble with them.

Iga also began teaching Abba how to be a clanluna.

Midwinter came, and it was time for the Winter Festival. In the past, there were men without mates, so many of the men with mates had to bow out. This time, there were more women than men. The Clanlunae would get to pick last. So they might not get a man to Share with this time.

Iga the Clanluna started off the dance with drumming on a bowl. It was a different rhythm that the one for the Women’s Ceremonies. While she drummed, Ayla passes around a bowl for everyone participating to drink from. It was Iga’s special mushrooms chosen for Winter Festivals, that Ayla had enhanced with some herbs of her own, brewed into a potion then watered down so that a group could drink from the bowl. The children who were almost adults, Durciza and Ura, helped Iga with the Drumming. While Abba was taking care of the younger children tonight.

As the tea took effect, he felt the need to dance around the fire. Soon the floor of the cave began to glow with an iridescent purple light. Ebra took him by the hand and pulled him towards his hearth. As he followed her, the reflected that this was not the firs time he had Relieved his Need in her. But back then, she was much younger. She had ages since then. Clan people age quicker ,so she looked more like she was 66-years-old for a woman of the Others. While he still looked like he was the same age as a 39-year-old man of the Others. She looked at him expectantly and he gave her the signal. The tea made his able to see her aura and they could each tell what the other wanted so. She laid down on the fur waiting for him to give her Needs like it had often down with his first mate, Aba. He laid down beside her and pulled her into a kiss.

As they proceeded to Share Pleasures he was brought back to the first time they had done this. Targ was about to use her to Relieve his Needs and this had reminded him of his first life when Targ had used her very roughly and hurt her. Creb had used her instead. So he had used her instead of Targ. But he hadn’t just used her. He had Shared Pleasures with her as he was not doing to. Creb suddenly realized in that time, long ago, he had defeated her totem. That would explain why Broud had his memories. As in the previous life, It must have been Targ who defeated her totem to produce Broud. That explains much about the other Broud’s personality. And then there was the time that Targ brutally Forced Aba to Relieve his Needs. . . . Targ must had defeated her totem then. That means . . . Zab has the Clan memories of Targ!

They Shared Pleasures almost all night long and were still awake when Uba returned to his hearth.

“Did he Relieve your Needs,” Uba asked Ebra.

“Yes, your mate was very thorough in giving this woman Needs and Relieving them,” signed Ebra.

“This clanluna is happy to see you say that,” signed Uba, before stoking the fire so she could make a morning tea.

Ebra put her wrap back on, then gave Creb a quick hug before returning to Brun’s hearth to cook his morning meal.

“Ayla, this woman wants you to test her,” signed Uba.

Ayla waved her wand and intoned:

“Tuvasta Rasedus!”

Uba’s abdomen glowed briefly.

“Your totem has been defeated,” signed Ayla. “No more shape changing (polyjuice) potion for you.”

“That won’t be a problem,” signed Uba. “We’ve learned we can do without it, if we have to.”
