Chapter 69: Durciza’s mate
Spring came, and with it, Durciza became a woman. Being 1/2 Clan, she had aged faster than a girl of the Others, but slower than the Clan. So at 10-years-old she had the emotional and physical maturity of a 14-year-old woman of the Others. Harr thought that was still too young to be considered adult, which is why he refused to perform anyone’s 1st Rites. Thonlan made it a wonderful experience for her and the next morning, her smile was dazzling.
“So is this woman to take it that you enjoyed your night of 1st Rites?” Ayla signed.
“Oh yes! He was wonderful!” Durciza signed. “This gi- woman just wishes she didn’t have to wait a year to Share Pleasures with him again.”
“Now that you are a woman, you will need a mate,” signed Ayla. “And unfortunately, all of the men in the Clan already have mates. So who would you like to be a 2nd or 3rd mate to?”
“This gi- . . . woman doesn’t want to be a 2nd mate to anyone,” signed Durciza. “Can’t this woman just be mated to Ura?”
“This woman didn’t know you only liked Sharing Pleasures with women,” signed Ayla. “Have you and Ura been Sharing with each other already?”
“A . . . a little,” signed Durciza. “And this woman doesn’t only like Sharing with women. She enjoyed her 1st Rites and looks forward to Sharing herself with other men. But you don’t have to be mated to do that. You and Harr Share with Uba all the time and you’re not mated. If this woman can’t have a mate of her own, she’d rather share a hearth with Ura and when we feel the Need for a man, we’ll ask a woman for permission to use her mate.”
Ayla pictured how Ebra would react to that and laughed out loud.
“Ura is not yet a woman,” signed Ayla. “So you can’t mate her until then. This woman will talk to the Leader about it and see what we can do.”
Ayla approached Creb and sat at his feet.
Creb tapped her on the shoulder.
“This woman needs to talk to you about her daughter, Durciza,” signed Ayla. “She has recently become a woman and doesn’t want to be a 2nd mate.”
“A woman needs a mate,” signed Creb.
“She wishes to mate Ura,” signed Ayla.
“Ura is still a girl and will not become a man,” signed Creb “Besides, she is Durciza’s hearth sister.”
“But even though the both live at Harr’s hearth, they are not actually related,” signed Ayla. “Some women prefer to Share Pleasures with other women. This woman was anticipating have this conversation some day about her daughter Mariza. The woman she was named after only liked Sharing with women and this woman expected her Mariza would be the same.”
“Ura is still a girl,” signed Creb.
“She will soon be a woman,” signed Ayla. “Her and Durciza are the same age.”
“Very well, this Leader will meditate on it and give you an answer later,” signed Creb.
“Thank you Creb,” signed Ayla before giving him a hug and leaving him to his thoughts.
Later, he walked over to Harr’s hearth.
“We need to make the first hunt of Spring,” signed Creb. “Durciza will make the kill. If she is successful, she will be officially made a woman-who-hunts and when Ura becomes a woman, she will be allowed to mate her.”
Harr scouted on the Nimbus broom. When he returned, he looked very excited. He landed before Creb, pointed and signed a single word:
“Mammoth!”
The whole clan was excited as they traveled the direction that Harr had indicated. Creb was having second thoughts about this hunt being a test for Durciza, but he had given his word. But instead of a party of hunters, the whole Clan had came to this hunt. When they crested a hill and saw the mammoths in the distance, Creb addressed the Clan:
“Thonlan will direct the hunt. Durciza will get the first cast, if she fails to kill the mammoth, The rest of the Hunters can attempt to bring one down. Thonlan?”
“The Leader, Harr, Ayla, Droov, Brun and Lun will stay here to guard the Clan.” signed Thonlan. “Uba, Iga and this Hunter will follow Durciza. She will get one chance to kill a mammoth with her sling. If she fails to kill it, the rest of us will throw spears, or use sling magic or bow magic to take it down.”
Brun and Droov were armed with Clan spears and would not be able to help kill a mammoth unless things went disastrously wrong. Creb, Ayla and Lun were armed with Slings. Using sling magic, they would be able to hit a mammoth even from this distance. Uba had her longbow and rune inscribed arrows. Thonlan and Iga had throwing spears and would need to get closer to have a chance of killing a mammoth. Durciza was only armed with her Sling. Her future hung on this hunt.
Ura was on the hill with the rest of the Clan as she watched the hunters stalk forwards. Harr had used magic to hide the Clan on the hill from the mammoths. The hunting party had no such protection. This was a test of their hunting skills. Stealthily, the hunters crept forward. Ura grabbed her totem bag:
“Ursus or Luna or any other spirit who is listening, please let Durciza succeed so this girl can be her mate!” prayed Ura.
Durciza knew she could have picked one off from the distance. But Thonlan wanted to them to get close enough that he and Iga could use their spears in case she missed. This was not a risk. Durciza knew that with sling magic, she could direct the stone where she wanted it to go unerringly as long as she concentrated properly. Finally, Thonlan judged them close enough. The mammoths towered over them.
“Now!” signed Thonlan.
Durciza slowly loaded the pouch of her sling, She let it hang there for a moment as she channeled magic down her arm and into the sling. When she began the wind-up, spinning the sling, the mammoths turned their head to look at her. When she released, she surged the magic through the sling sending it at supersonic speed through the skull of a mammoth.
KRACK!
The mammoth fell.
Suddenly, there was a trumpeting as an enraged mammoth charged at them! Thonlan and Iga both had time to cast their spears and they hit, but didn’t even slow it down! Uba raised and drew her already notched arrow and channeled a Bombarda spell through it as she released. The charging mammoth’s head exploded and it skidded to a stop in front of Uba as she calmly stood in it’s path. When it stopped moving, she raised a foot and placed it on the wreckage that had been the mammoth’s head in a show of dominance. The rest of the herd, ran away from the predators that had just killed two of their number.
“You did it! You did it!” waved Ura as the Clan began moving down to the hunters and their prey. When she got to Durciza, she pulled her into a kiss, which she returned until her mother interrupted them.
“Durciza, you may be a woman, but Ura is still a girl,” signed Ayla.
“Yes Mama,” replied Durciza, in Sungean, as she released her forbidden Love.
Now that there were not one, but two mammoths to butcher, the Clan got to work. Creb cut the hearts out and buried them where the mammoths had fallen. Creb then cut some pieces off the livers. He gave the first piece of the one she killed to Durciza. The first piece of the other one, he gave to Uba. The rest of the hunters each got to eat a piece of the still warm liver.
Creb was about to order the women to begin butchering, when Uba waved her wand, shrunk them both and put them in a fold of her wrap.
“We can can finish butchering them at the cave,” signed Uba.
Creb nodded his agreement.
As they were walking back to the cave, Lun approached Uba.
“Can you teach this man to shoot the longbow like that?” signed Lun.
“This woman-who-hunts would be happy to teach you,” signed Uba. “But part of it was that this Weech channeled her magic through the arrow and changed the arrows before with runes beforehand. Also, it takes a lot of strength to draw a long bow. This woman-who-hunts had to practice to built up the strength to draw it. But if you are interested, this woman-who-hunts will make you a longbow.”
Butchering the two mammoths was made easier by flaying charms to remove the skin and cutting curses to cut it into smaller pieces. But they still had to smoke it on real fires. Magic drying would have spoiled the tastes. It two full days and the night between to finish processing. So it was the next night that Durciza was officially recognized as a woman-who-hunts with a ceremony. This was followed by a men’s ceremony led by Creb and a women’s ceremony led by Iza.
Now that it was spring there was gardening to do. Ayla had prepared a special potion that had saved the magical plants from the year before. Now she, with the help of Uba, Jaymz, Lili and Abba were applying a potion to wake them back up. Once that was done, others needed to be planted from seed. Then, they started planting the food crops. While Ayla led the magical gardening. Iza lead the rest of the women in gathering spring greens to supplement their diet.
By summer it was apparent that Durciza’s totem had been defeated, most likely during her 1st Rites by Thonlan. But Ura was still a girl.
It wasn’t until Autumn that Ura became a woman. It surprised everyone except Durciza that Ura wanted Brun to perform her 1st Rites. Once that was accomplished, she was eligible to be mated. She was questioned extensively by both Ayla and Creb whether to be mated to Durciza was what she really wanted. In the end, they were satisfied that it was and Iga held the ceremony uniting them as mates. She painted the symbols of their totems on their chests, then the ones of the other over it.
“In the name of Ursus the Great Cave Bear and the Great Mother Luna, this Clanluna declares these two united as mates,” signed Uba.
Both Ura and a heavily pregnant Durciza started to sit at the other’s feet, then stopped. Ura then sat and signed.
“This woman will sit, you will tap her shoulder.”
Durciza tapped Ura on the shoulder, and she rose to follow her to their new hearth.
“This woman can’t believe they let us mate each other,” signed Ura.
“At least you didn’t have to kill a mammoth first like this woman-who-hunts did,” signed Durciza. “Are you going to become a woman-who-hunts?”
“This woman is not certain,” signed Ura. “This woman would like to be able to hunt. But without magic, this woman will never be able to bring down a large animal.”
“You could take up the longbow,” signed Durciza.
“That’s true,” signed Ura. “This woman will ask Uba about it when our isolation ends.”
“So how was Brun?” Durciza signed.
“It was nice,” signed Ura.
“Nice enough that you want to Share Pleasures with other men?” Durciza signed. “Or do you only want women now?”
“This woman has only ever done anything with you or Brun,” signed Ura. “She would need more experiences to know what she likes.”
“So who do you want experiences with?” signed Durciza.
“Uba is almost as attractive as a man,” signed Ura. “And Vora is pretty and nice. And of course, there’s Iga The Clanluna. This woman thinks she must be good at Pleasures. But this woman is also curious about men. So she would add to the list: Creb, Thonlan because she wants know what it was like for your 1st Rites, Lun is quite fit. And then there’s . . . Harr.”
“Harr? But he’s like our male mother,” signed Durciza.
“So who are you Sharing with?” signed Ura.
Durciza gazed at her mate lovingly. “No one. This woman was waiting for you. But people this woman would like to Share with: Creb, Uba, Thonlan next year, Iga, Lun, Abba, and. . . . you.”
“Well you don’t have to wait for this woman anymore,” signed Ura, as she pulled her into a kiss.
When their mating isolation ended, Ura asked Uba to teach her the longbow. So now she had two students learning the longbow.
