Chapter 70: Education begins
It wasn’t yet winter when Durciza delivered her daughter.
Autumn meant the Clan had to make sure their storage of Winter food was full. There were end of the season hunts, last gatherings of the root plants, and a potion had to be poured on most of the magical plants to send them into dormancy.
When the animals started heading North, they knew that winter was almost here.
Once it was officially winter, Uba, Harr, Ayla, Iga and Creb began educating again.
With her partial Clan enhanced memory, Lili was learning literacy faster than her older brother Jaymz. Thonlan and Mio were also learning to write in English. Although the couldn’t do magic and so most of the books in the world were useless to them, they recognized that writing messages could be a useful skill. Luna’s daughter, dzini was also starting to learn to read and do math.
Durciza had progressed to 3rd year magic. Harr was teaching her Defense, Charms and Transfiguration. Ayla was teaching magical Herbalogy, Potions and Astronomy. Now, Uba had added Divination and Runes to her classes. Iga was also teaching her how to be a clanluna.
Lun and Abba were in their 2nd year of their magical education. Lun had been able to learn magic normally. But Abba was utterly unable to learn to read. And she was hampered in the use of a wand. Creb was able to teach her a few simple spells that she learned to cast silently. But most went against her Clan memories. Ayla had to alter the way she taught magical Herbalogy and Potions so that Abba could learn it.
Luna’s oldest daughter also had partial Clan memories derived from Iza. And she was not a Weech. So Iza was reminding her how to be a medicine woman.
Uba would have liked to have taught Care of magical creatures. But unlike her previous life, she hadn’t yet made any magical creatures. Even the Cave Bears had run off during the big battle against Groob. She resolved to start making some next spring.
The whole Clan was also taking time to learn the Mamutoi language from Ayla and Mio.
They had another Winter Festival, this time with Durciza and Ura participating. Though both picked women to Share with, which helped with the skewed female/male ratio.
During the winter, it became apparent that Ura’s totem had been defeated too.
Spring arrived and it was time to reawaken the magical garden, plant the crops and go on hunts.
This was also, when Durciza and Lun were taught fly a broom. Even though Harr assured her it was not necessary, Durciza followed her mother’s example of only wearing warming potion when flying.
Lun was also practicing with his longbow. He had become a good enough archer to take down small game, like birds and rabbits. Now he was starting to bring it with him on hunts. Uba had made him a supply of rune engraved arrows that he could activate on drawing.
The clanluna were still doing monthly ceremonies during warmer weather and now Abba and Durciza were welcome to join these.
Uba found that she didn’t miss dairy products as much as she had when she was Luna. But when Harr flew back and announced that he had spotted a herd of reindeer, she couldn’t let this possibility pass. She ran and sat at Creb's feet. He tapped her on the shoulder.
“What is so important that you came to sit at this Leader’s feet?” Creb signed.
“This Weech would like to capture, not kill the reindeer,” signed Uba.
‘Why do you want to capture them?” Creb signed.
“This Weech wants to turn them into crumple-horned snorkack,” signed Uba. “We can then keep a small herd of them for milk and things made from their milk.”
‘Very well, this Leader will allow it,” signed Creb. “But will also kill some for meat.”
Thonlan's plan for this was to have Uba and Harr fly on brooms and use their wands to stun some of them before the Clan hunted some more.
And so, they flew ahead of the Clan, Harr dressed in extra furs to protect against the chilly air. Uba dressed in only a warming potion. They circled around to the far side of the herd before swooping down to get closer. They each pulled out their wands. Harr had a wand holster he had bought at Olivander’s years ago. Uba had a sticking charm to keep it tucked behind her ear when not in use. The both cast silent Stunners at a buck and 6 of the does, who all collapsed immediately. Their task accomplished, the two of them flew up higher so they could watch the Clan. The herd was ambling towards the hunters of the Clan, but didn’t see them yet. Thonlan, Iga and Lun were sneaking forward. When Thonlan judged them close enough, he threw his spear. That was the signal for the rest of the Clan. Iga threw her spear and Lun drew, charged and released the arrow he had notched in his longbow. Further away, Ayla, Creb and Durciza started spinning their slings, winding up to cast.
Thonlan’s spear hit one in the lung, it tried to run away but was bleeding out. Iga’s hit another in the neck, not a mortal wound, but it was weakening and bleeding profusely. Lun’s arrow hit Thonlan’s reindeer and the full body bind the arrow was charged with, made the deer fall over and unable to move. He notched, drew, charged and loosed another arrow at Iga’s reindeer, stopping it too.
KRACK!
KRACK! KRACK!
KRACK!
Creb, Ayla and Durciza released the stones from their slings magically enhancing them so that they killed two more reindeer. (Ayla and Durciza had targeted the same one)
“Stop!” Thonlan called a halt to the hunt.
They had enough for now. Thonlan cut the throats of the magically bound, but dying reindeer. The rest of the herd ran away.
Now that the hunt was over, Harr and Uba landed. Uba used her wand to shrink the stunned reindeer which Harr tucked into a fold of his wrap. The captured reindeer were kept stunned until after the dead ones were all butchered and dried. Then a pen was built to hold them. This pen was only three feet tall, short enough that it could be climbed over. But it had been enhanced with runes to make an invisible barrier that the reindeer couldn’t jump over. She enlarged them in the pen and woke them with an enervate Uba then, transfigured them so that their antlers changed into a single spiral horn and their colour became and iridescent blue. They could not possible be mistaken for a wild reindeer now.
Now she needed to train them to accept being milked by humans, which would take the rest of the summer. But milk, butter and cheeses became welcome additions to the Clan diet.
Ura was improving with the longbow and Jaymz was starting to practice with it too. Clan people and even part Clan people had an advantage over the Others in building up the muscle need to draw a longbow. But had her students start with a smaller bow and work their way up to a longbow.
Ura’s baby, when he was born turned out to be a 3/4 Clan boy.
Autumn followed soon after and then winter.
This winter the whole Clan was learning the Sharamudoi Language from Mio and Thonlan. Those that were pure Clan couldn’t learn to speak it. But they with their enhanced memories, they were able to learn to understand it faster than everyone else.
There was also a large portion of the children and young adults that were studying magic or literacy.
Dorva was the one having the most difficulty as her Clan memories didn’t come from Iza. So she didn’t have Abba’s advantage in learning Herbalogy or Potions.
On the Other hand, Bok and Hac had partial Clan memories derived from Harr and found things easy to learn if Harr had learned them before they were born.
Uba’s Daughter, Viza, became a woman and a Medicine Woman. She had the Clan memories of Iza’s line. She had Droov for her 1st Rites, then became a 2nd mate to Harr. Ayla welcomed having another woman to help with childcare.
Iga stepped into Creb’s hearth and sat at Uba’s feet.
Uba was surprised at this. But tapped her on the shoulder to find out what she wanted.
“Oh Great Luna, this Clanluna humbly begs for a boon,” signed Iga.
“What is it you want?” Uba signed.
“This woman would like to have a daughter,” signed Iga. “Ayla has a potion that can make it happen. But she is afraid of thwarting your will.”
“This Weech is familiar with the potion,” signed Uba. “If you take it, your daughter will be a Weech, but you will become barren and will never have another child.”
“This Clanluna is willing to pay that price if you are willing to permit it,” signed Iga.
“This woman will permit it,” signed Uba. “It there a particular reason that you want to do this?”
“This woman had seen how the Clan memories affect the way the part Clan children can learn,” signed Iga. “This woman would like a Weech daughter with her Clan memories.”
“In order for the potion to work, a weez-ur will have to defeat your totem. Thonlan will not be able to do it,” signed Uba. “Do you have someone in mind?”
“This woman would like to Share Pleasures with Creb to activate the potion,” signed Iga.
“This woman will join you,” signed Uba as she reached for a vial of Polyjuice Potion and drank it, transforming herself into Luna.
Iga’s reaction was undisguised glee. Uba’s children had a different reaction. Dzini wrinkled her nose and signed:
“Come on Hermi. Let’s go see Lili and Mariza,” signed dzini, before she took her sister by the hand and drug her off.
Oh! My beautiful Goddess!” Iga purred, in English as she moved to kiss Luna.
