Chapter 71: Ura hunts

This Spring Uba decided that Ura was ready to join a hunt with her longbow. A bow that length and thickness required a large amount of strength to draw it. For the Other’s it took years to build up that much muscle. Ayla’s son Jaymz was working on it and each year, Uba gave him a bigger, thicker bow to practice with. But people where were part Clan found it much easier to build up the required muscle. This was even more true of those who were pure Clan, like Uba. But most Clan men had no interest. They didn’t have the memories for it.

Thonlan directed Uba, Lun and Ura forward as they approached the wooly rhino. It was too far way for Thonlan to throw a spear when it spotted them. But it was not out of range of a longbow or of a magically augmented sling.

It charged at them and as it drew closer, Thonlan signed:

“Spread out!”

When they moved apart, it was apparent that Ura was the one it was charging at. Ura was unable to activate runes charged arrows so all she had were normal ones. She notched, drew and released. The arrow flew over the rhino and nicked it in the rear. It was not slowing down at all! She trying another arrow. This one missed completely! It was coming very close . . . . she loosed one last arrow at it, the last one she would have time for. Thonlan and the other’s were becoming alarmed! Uba and Lun also loosed arrows at it that arrived just after hers, Thonlan threw a spear. As it died, it’s momentum continued to carry it towards Ura she dodged out of the way just in time, her arrow protruding from its’ eye.

Thonlan examined its’ wounds. Uba got its’ shoulder, Lun its’ flank, Thonlan had missed completely. Ura had made the kill.

Her mate greeted this with an enthusiastic kiss.

That night, Ura was made a woman-who-hunts. This was followed by Men’s and Women’s ceremonies.

After Iza and Creb traded bowls, Creb lead the men away from the cave. Lun placed the cave bear skull on the bround and the men formed a circle around it. They drank the tea, which had traditionally have been made form datura, but in recent years Ayla and Iga had improved the recipe.

Creb reached into Harr’s mind and started guiding him back through his memories. Much of Harr’s memories were incomprehensible to Creb. Eventually he reached Harr’s common ancestor with Thonlan, and he guided both men of the Others back through their memories.

While he had been doing this, Lun had been guiding the men of the Clan back through their memories. This was Lun’s first time doing this. Creb didn’t like being both Leader and Mog-Ur. But he didn’t feel that Lun was ready to be mog-ur yet. Still it helped that Lun had guided the rest of the men back so that Creb could now unite all the men in a single memory line that they all shared. He went back to the time of women-who-hunt and female mog-urs. The people of this time had a simplified version of the ancient Clan signs. But even they had a few spoken words too. Watching this ancient time reassured the old men like Brun and Droov. For the younger men and the Others it reaffirmed their belief in the equality of women.

When he brought them back to the present, the sun was starting to rise. Creb stood up, feeling the creaking of his knees. He was aging slower than men of the Clan normally did. But he was still aging and felt as old as a 42-year-old man of the Others would. He walked with the men back to the cave. As usual, the women were sprawled out on the ground naked. As he walked by, Ayla opened her eyes and noticed him.

“This woman greets you,” signed Ayla, the Clan equivalent of “Good morning!”

“This man greets you,” signed Creb, in return, before continuing to his hearth. He saw that the children of the Can were all at Thonlan’s hearth where Iga had looked after them rather than participate in the Women’s Ceremony.

Creb unbanked the fire and added some wood. He didn’t have the memories to boil water for tea. But he could make a fire.

Uba soon came into the cave, stopping to get her daughters dzini and Hermi. Her spirit friend that she had named her youngest after was walking with her talking to her with mouth words that Creb couldn’t hear.

“This woman greets her mate,” signed Uba.

“This Mog-Ur greets his mate and her spirit friend,” signed Creb.

“This woman greets you,” signed Hermione. “Did you have a good Men’s Ceremony?”

“Hermi! You are not supposed to ask about that!” Uba signed.

“Whoops! I forgot!” said Hermione, but Creb couldn’t hear her.

“This woman apologizes,” signed Hermione.

“This Mog-Ur will forgive it,” signed Creb.

The spirit Hermi said some more mouth words to Uba before a door opened up and she stepped through and disappeared.

By now, Iza had returned to their hearth and greeted them.

Uba picked up the iron cooking pot she had made. Pointing her wand at it, water flowed out and filled the pot. She then hung it over the fire on an iron rack that she had also created. She then sat in front of Creb so he could wrap his arms around her. Her youngest, Hermi, was still not completely weened and she climbed into Uba’s lap to nurse. Uba held her daughter and leaned back into him so they could enjoy each other’s company together.

Once the water was boiling, she used here wand to levitate the pot and pour it into cups for their family. She then added some herbs to the cups, different herbs for each person and let them seep. Once the tea was ready she gave a cup to Creb, to Iza, and then to each of the girls, after waving her wand and cooling it a little more so it wouldn’t burn their tongues. They drank there tea as Creb started to feel drowsy. He new that it was the tea as much as the lack of sleep that was making that way. He handed her the cup when he was finished and laid down for a nap.

Creb woke up, refreshed. He was alone at his hearth. Grabbing his wand, sling and spear, he strolled out of the cave. Iza was sitting with a group of women and small children, including Uba’s youngest. They women were sorting the plants they had gathered that morning. Spotting his spear, Iga turned to Uba and signed:

“If you want to go hunting, this woman can watch Hermi.”

Uba nodded her thanks and ran into the cave. She came out with her longbow and a quiver of arrows. She ran up to Creb and sat at his feet. Creb tapped her on the shoulder.

“This woman-who-hunts would like to go hunting with you,” signed Uba.

Creb nodded his acceptance and she fell into place walking behind him as they left the cave. They both knew, her desire for hunting was not just to kill animals. So Creb led her into the forrest. When they arrived at their spot, he turned to her and gave her the Signal. Uba gave him a happy look before pulling a potion flask from a fold in her wrap, drinking it and transforming into Luna. She set down her bow and quiver, then removed her wrap before stepping forward.

“That’s more comfortable,” purred Luna. “Now let’s Share some Pleasures!”

Creb pulled her into a kiss that she quickly deepened as her hands began wandering over his body.

She turned back into Uba before they were finished, but they continued until both their Needs were Relieved. After they had caught their breath, Uba pushed his chest so that she could put here hands in his face and talk to him.

“That was nice,” signed Uba. “Are you ready to hunt?”

Creb got off her and signed:

“Yes, we should.”

They put their wraps back on and started out. Uba strung her longbow, in case she needed it. They then waved their wands at each other, making each their footsteps silent, and their scent hidden.

They walked for a while until they spotted a brace of ptarmigan. Creb put the ends of his sling in his mouth. The restoration of his missing arm had not broken him of this habit. Loading the sling pouch with a stone. He twirled it in the wind up, as Uba raised her longbow.

KRACK!

Creb released the stone, then directed it to hit one, then the other. Uba untouched her arrow and signed at him.

“You got them both!”

Creb and Uba searched for their borrow. Uba found it first and pulled the eggs from it. She tucked the eggs into her wrap, then tied the feet of the Ptarmigan together and draped them over her shoulder. She then followed Creb back to the cave. Once they arrived Creb built the fire back up, while Uba gave one the the ptarmigan to Ayla and put the other in iron dutch oven she had previously made. After dressing the bird, she put the eggs and some vegetables inside it. Then placed it in the dutch oven. She then placed it directly on the coals and put more coals on top so it would bake from both sides.

The meal was delicious! Their whole family enjoyed it. After the meal, Iza told stories until the children fell asleep. The adults then climbed into their furs. Creb wrapped his real arm around Uba with his hand between her breasts. He could feel her heart beating and contentedly drifted off to sleep.
