Chapter 72: Creb in Winter
Iga’s daughter was born and she named it Griga, after her highly skilled daughter from her previous life.
Summer passed to Autumn and then winter came.
It was a clear winter night between snow storms, So Harr had brought out the telescopes and set them up outside the cave so he had Uba could have a practical lesson in magical Astronomy. Not everyone could understand the more esoteric aspect of the subject. Dorva and Abba, being full Clan found it particularly difficult, just as Creb did. But even the nonmagical members of the Clan could look through the eye-piece and see what it was pointing at. Harr waved his wand and all the telescopes changed what they were pointing at.
“If you look at what it is pointing at now, you will see Jupiter,” said Harr, in English, because he knew that everyone in the Clan could understand it and the darkness made it hard to see people’s signs, even if you were not looking in the telescope. “It is the second brightest wandering star that you can see. It is actually much bigger than the world we live on. And those four stars near it, are actually moons, like our moon. If you are looking through one of the magical telescopes, you can zoom in and see one of the moons better.”
Creb looked through the eye-piece, at the planet, then channeled his magic to zoom in on Io, which was redder than the moon he was used to seeing in the sky. He looked up to see Brun shaking his head in confusion, then bending to get another look.
Staying up to look at the night sky meant he slept late the next morning. There was hot tea and a warm meal waiting next to him. Uba must had made it before she left and charmed it to stay warm until he touched it. He enjoyed his meal, then walked over to Harr’s hearth to help with the lessons.
Harr, Ayla, Uba and Iza were teaching the various magical members of the Clan different kinds of magic. Harr was teaching Lili, Oud and Bok Defense Against the Dark Arts. Uba was teaching Charms to Hac and Lun. Ayla and Iza were teaching Dorva and Abba about the uses of non-magical herbs. In other words, medicine woman magic. Seeing Durciza practicing the Patronis, Creb stepped in to help her.
“You have to think of a happy thought to make it work,” signed Creb, “And move your wand like this.”
“This Weech is not sure she has the movement right,” signed Durciza. “Can you move her her arm through the movements?”
Creb stepped behind her and moved her arm through the movements. Burt when he did so, she leaned back into him. Creb let her go and stepped to her side so she could see his signs:
“Now you try it.”
Durciza waved her wand the way he had shown her and shouted:
“Expecto Patronum!”
A small cloud of white mist seeped out of her wand.
“Still not enough,” signed Durciza.
“Your thought must not be happy enough,” signed Creb. “Try another thought.”
“There’s a Winter Festival tonight. Perhaps you will give me a happy thought?” signed Durciza, as she gave him a wink.
“It is possible,” signed Creb, before returning to the lesson.
Creb continued to teach her while she kept flirting with him. It was time to end the lesson when Uba and Iza started back to his hearth to prepare an evening meal.
“Durciza is hinting that she wants to pick you tonight,” signed Uba, as they enjoyed their evening meal. “This woman thinks she was trying to subtlety encourage you to give her the signal.”
“She was failing . . . . at being subtle,” signed Creb. “Do you have anyone in mind to pick?”
“This woman is a clanluna,” signed Uba. She will get last choice and there are more women than men, so she will only get to participate if a couple welcome her.”
“This man would welcome his mate no matter who choses him,” signed Creb. “How about you Iza? Is there someone you want to pick?”
“This woman wants to pick Droov . . . unless Ura gets him first,” signed Iza.
After people had time to digest their evening meal, Iga started to gather people in the center hearth for the Winter Festival. The children who were almost adults drummed while the adults danced. A bowl was passed around that contained a potion Ayla had brewed, drawing on Iga’s special mushrooms, Iza’s memories of psychoactive herb and her own skill at potioneering.
Creb danced with all the other adults. He was not at all surprised when Durciza took him by the hand and drug him back to his hearth. As soon as they arrived, she pulled him into a kiss. She had matured slower than Clan women normally did and at this point she looked like a 20-year-old woman of the Others. Unlike Creb, she could make all the mouth sounds or the Others’ speech. And when she when her Need was Relieved, she made sounds just like Iga did. She was not the only women that had developed this trait. The cave had become nosier in recent years, especially when women were having their Needs Relieved. Tonight was no exception. Durciza appeared to enjoy him immensely and let the whole cave no how much she was enjoying him.
The next morning, Creb awoke to see Uba preparing a morning tea for them. Durciza was still cuddled up to him.
“You appeared to enjoy the Winter Festival,” signed Uba.
“Not as much as Durciza did,” signed Creb.
“This woman heard,” signed Uba with a humorous look in her eye.
“Who did you Share with?” Creb signed.
“No one,” signed Uba. “This woman watched the children.”
“This man could Share with you later today if you want?” Creb signed.
Even after the Winter Festival, there were several more months of winter. When they saw the first signs of Spring, the teachers of magic gathered to discuss, Durciza, their most advanced student of magic.
“She has Ayla’s gift for healing,” signed Iza. “This medicine woman recommends that she be recognized as a medicine woman of the Clan.”
“This Medicine Woman agrees,” signed Ayla. “She is also doing well in Herbalogy and Potions.”
“Back in the time yet to come where this Weez-Ur and Luna lived, We has to take the O.W.L. tests to see if we could handle the more advanced material,” signed Harr.
“This Weech thinks that Durciza can handle to the more advanced Herbalogy
And Potions,” signed Ayla.
“She is also doing well in Divination and Runes,” signed Uba. “She can continue with them.”
“She is also doing well in Astronomy,” signed Harr. “But she’s more limited in the wand subjects: Charms, Defense and Transfiguration.”
“This Weez-Ur has also worked with her,” signed Creb. “She still needs to use mouth sounds in order to use her wand and this Weez-Ur does not think she will ever be able to use her wand silently for most spells.”
“This Weech needs to make more magical animals so that Care of Magical Creatures can be added to their education,” signed Uba.
“This Weech thinks she might be able to learn Arithmancy,” signed Ayla. “Harr or this Weech could teach it to her.”
“This Clanluna think that both her and Ura are ready to become Clanlunae,” signed Iga, as Ayla and Uba nodded.
“Then, it is settled,” signed Creb. “After it gets warm enough, we will perform the ceremony to make Durciza a medicine woman and both of them Clanlunae.”
