Chapter 73: Preparing for next year’s Clan Gathering
Now that it was Spring, Creb’s Clan was preparing for the next Clan Gathering, which they would be hosting. But one member of the Clan had other plans.
Uba went to Harr’s hearth where she stripped out of her wrap and rubbed herself all over with the Warming Potion. Once she was fully covered, with her wand tucked behind her ear and wearing only a purse she had made with a strap she could throw over her shoulder, Uba opened Luna’s truck and summoned the Nimbus broom from it. She carried it outside before mounting it and flying off.
She needed to find a herd of horses. She halted in mid air, drew her wand and cast a “point me” charm. The wand spun in her hand until it pointed a direction. Uba looked for a landmark in that direction. There was a hill in the distance that way. Tucking her wand back behind her ear, she flew off in that direction.
She soon spotted a herd of horses. Flying lower, she drew her wand at pointed it at one of the foals and silently transfigured it into a female centaur. As soon as the change happened the horses shied away from it, even the centaur’s mare. Uba cast a silent Stunner, shrunk the centaur and summoned it to her. Gently placing the centaur in her bag, Uba flew back to the cave.
She landed outside the cave, pulled out the centaur and set it on the ground.
“What have you there?” Creb signed, as he approached.
“A centaur,” signed Uba. “This woman made a centaur.”
“Aren’t centaurs supposed to be male?” Creb signed.
“That was one of the mistakes from our past life,” signed Uba. “This Weech intends to make centaurs of both genders.”
“Will you make unicorns of both genders too,” signed Creb.
“This Weech had not thought of that,” signed Uba. “This Weech supposes she must.”
Uba took time to examine her new centaur. It had the body of a new born foal and was already able to walk. But were the neck should be, a human torso of a baby grew. It was able to hold it’s head up, but otherwise was like a baby of the Others.
Uba cast an enervate and the centaur climbed to her feet. She looked fearfully around at the Clan. But Uba pulled her into a hug and she started rooting, looking in the wrong place for a horse breast to nurse off of. Uba carried the centaur over to the coral where the Snorkacks were. She sat down next to one, milked it into her palm then held the hand in front of the centaur so she could drink.
Brun walked over to Creb.
“The other Clans will not understand this,” signed Brun.
“This Leader knows that,” signed Creb. “But this is part of why the Luna became Uba.”
“If we are going to host the Clan Gathering, we’ll need a Cave Bear,” signed Brun.
“This Leader will send Harr to find a Cave Bear with cub,” signed Creb. “We can hunt the mother bear and raise the cub as part of our Clan.”
“This man would recommend sending someone with him, perhaps your acolyte?” Brun signed.
“That is a good idea,” signed Creb. “Lun would be less likely than Uba to turn the cub into something unnatural.”
Iza had taken a group of women out gathering wild plants to supplement their diet. These days, their diet was much more varied than it was in her memories. In addition to the meat the men hunted and the plants they were gathering, there was also the plants that the Weeches grew in their garden. And more recently, there was the milk from the snorkacks that was made into cheese and yogurt and butter. Things had changed so much since Harr cured her lungs. Iza took a moment to speak with Mio.
“Do our Clan was seem strange to you?” Iza signed.
“It did take a while for this woman to adjust to the change,” signed Mio. “And this woman still wears Sharamudoi clothes in the winter. But now that is is warm, This woman prefers to wear a Clan wrap.”
“Do you have trouble submitting like a good Clan woman?” Iza signed.
“This woman might have trouble if her mate was a very traditional man of the Clan,” signed Mio. “But Thonlan is only a little more dominant than men of the Others usually are. And he is more easily able to help this woman at the hearth than a Clan man would be.”
“Are you sad that you haven’t had more children?” Iza signed.
“This woman fears that if she has another child she will die again,” signed Mio. “When she was in the spirit world, this woman chose to come back with her son. This gift from the Luna is worth not having more children. Though this woman suspects that the tea Ayla prepares her has something to do with this woman not being Blessed by Luna or Mudi.”
“Do not speak of your suspicions,” waved Iza. “This is not a proper subject for the eyes of others.”
When Harr and Lun had left, they had both flown on Cleansweep brooms. Now they were returning. Harr was flying less than a man’s height above the ground. And Lun was riding on the back of Honey Lover, her cub was was following behind.
“What have you done?” Creb signed.
“You told us to bring back a cub for next year’s Clan gathering,” signed Lun. “We have done so.”
“She wouldn’t let us take him without her,” signed Harr.
Creb sighed.
But after this, Lun was made the Clan’s mog-ur. He would now be in charge of leading the Clan in ceremonies, not Creb.
Durciza named her new son: Criz. He looked more Clan than her. Ura named her new daughter Thona. She was less Clan than her mother.
As the growing season progressed, Uba trained her Centaur, while the whole Clan helped the cub to feel like a member of the Clan. Uba recruited all the Weeches and weez-urs to learn from her as she taught the centaur, which was maturing a the rate a horse would, not a woman of the Others.
Hunting became something done far away, with the hunter’s using brooms and port-keys to travels to and from the herds. Creb wanted the game to be more plentiful next year when they hosted the Clan Gathering.
Autumn came and it was time to retire to the cave for the winter.
