Chapter 74: Winter becomes Spring

Being confined to the cave during winter storms, Creb worked on wands. He’d gathered sticks of various woods when it was warm. For cores, he experimented with hairs from the various magical Clan members, the Snorkacks, the centaur and even the cave bears. His Clan didn’t have a need for his homemade wands. They still had barely dented the supply of wands that Harr had brought from the time yet to come. But Creb knew that supply of wands would eventually run out. So he made them anyway to develop the wand-crafting skill so he could teach it to Iga’s son, Lun.

Lun and Abba were both in their 5th year of magical instruction. Abba, like Creb had been too Clan to learn to read. And her Clan memories, derived from Iza made it difficult her to learn to use a wand for any but the simplest spells. But she was excelling in magical Herbalogy and Potions. She had already been ordained a medicine woman of Iza’s line.

Lun was less handicapped by his Clan memories, as he was also 1/2 Other. This made his Clan memories less strong. But the ones he did have were derived from Creb. So anything Creb could do with a wand, he only needed to be reminded how to do it. But he also had the flexibility of mind that allowed him to learn to read. As a result, his skill with a wand exceeded Creb’s. He also had no difficulty learning the magic that didn’t require a wand. Lun reminded Creb of Luna’s soon, Zeen, from his previous life.

There were several children learning 3rd and 4th year magic. But this was the winter that Jaymz, dzini, and Ida would begin formally studying magic. Jaymz was pure Other and had no Clan memories to fall back on. But he was also unlimited in what new things he could learn.

Uba’s daughter: dzini was pure Clan and had the advantage and limitations of Clan memories. She had difficulty learning new things that were not in her memories. But her Clan memories were derived from Luna. So anything Uba had learned when she was Luna, was easy for dzini to learn. She only needed to be reminded. As a result, she had no difficulty learning to read or use a wand.

Abba’s daughter: Ida, had the same limitations as her mother. She couldn’t learn to read or do simple math. She had difficulty with the simplest of wand spells. But like her mother, Ida had a knack for magical Herbalogy and Potions. It easily came to her.

Creb helped teach these children. But at this point, Harr and Uba did more teaching of the wand subjects to Lun.

They had their usual Winter Festival and Creb was picked by Mio. From the noises she made, Creb believed he had thoroughly Relieved her Need.

Near the end of the Winter, the various teachers met to discuss the futures of Abba and Lun.

“There seems little point in discussing Abba,” signed Creb. “She is no better with a wand than she was many (four) years ago when she finished her first year.”

“But she is very good with plants and Potions,” signed Ayla. “This Weech believes that she can handle the more advanced Herbalogy and Potions lessons.”

“Lun, on the other hand is very good with a wand, especially Charms,” signed Harr.

“He is also good with at Herbalogy and Potions,” signed Ayla. “This Weech thinks he can handle to more advanced material. And unlike Abba, he can read the books.”

“Speaking of advanced material, how is Durciza doing?” Iga asked.

“She’s doing well in all the non-wand subjects, especially Astronomy and Arithmancy,” signed Uba.

Ayla, who had been teaching some of those subjects, nodded along with her.

Spring came, and it was time to take Hac on his Manhood hunt. He had been practicing with a longbow and Iga had been his redfoot last summer. And Creb had judged him ready to attempt a manhood hunt.

“Why does he get to be a man first?” Bok signed. “This boy is older than him!”

“He’s more Clan than you,” signed Harr. “This means he will grow up faster than you.”

“But it’s so unfair!” Bok signed.

“It it helps, being more Clan means he will not live as long as you,” signed Harr.

Since they were hosting the Clan Gathering this year, Harr and Lun flew far to the North on brooms until they spotted a herd of mammoths.

“Mammoth!” Lun signed.

“This man sees them,” signed Harr. ‘Let’s land here.”

The two men landed their brooms, then Harr grabbed Lun and apparated away with a:

Pop!

They appeared outside the cave.

“What have you found?” signed Creb.

“Mammoth!’ signed Lun.

Creb turned to his hunt leader, Thonlan.

“This will be Hac’s manhood hunt,” signed Creb. “Pick an appropriate group of hunters to go with you.”

“Harr, Ayla, Durciza, Uba, and Mio will hunt with us with us,” signed Thonlan. “dzini, Bok, Brun and Ura will observe.”

Harr nodded before pulling out a rope. He touched it with his wand and intoned:

“Portus!”

He then held out the rope.

“Everyone who is going, grab the rope,” signed Harr.

Shortly after they had all grasped the rope they felt a hooking sensation on their navels before they spun away. When the port-key stopped spinning, they had appeared in the spot that Harr had apparated himself and Lun from. As soon as they appeared Thonlan started giving orders:

“Those of you who are observing, watch from here,” signed Thonlan. “Harr, hide the rest of us. After we are hidden, we will sneak up on the bull that is closest to us. Be careful not to bump into each other and don’t get too close. Hac will take the first shot. If he fails to kill it on one shot, everyone else may try for it.”

Once the plan was outlined, Harr cast a disillusionment charm on the hunters, making them transparent and thus hard to see. He followed this up with spells to mask their scents and footsteps. The would all have to carefully watch the ground to see where others were trampling down the grass.

Hac was armed with a longbow and a quiver full of Rune inscribed arrows. Durciza and Uba had longbows too. Ayla had her sling and Mio had a couple of throwing spears.

Slowing, Hac creeped forward until he judged he was close enough. Notching an arrow, he channeled magic down the shaft while he drew back. When he released, he directed the arrow to hit the mammoth. As soon as it hit, the mammoth reared up and fell on his back. The Full-body-bind the arrow had been charged with had worked. Lun waved his wand to dispel the disillusionment so that the other’s wouldn’t hit him. Everyone except Thonlan and Mio followed suit. Now that the others could see him, he ran up to the mammoth and cut its’ carotid artery so it would bleed out. The rest of the mammoths ran away.

Once the mammoth was dead, Uba shrunk it down and placed it in a fold in her wrap. The hunting party returned to where the others were observing and they port-keyed back to the cave.

Now the real work would begin. Processing the mammoth was made much easier with Ayla levitating the carkas, while Uba cast a flaying curse, allowing them to get the whole hide as a single piece. Then the work began of cutting the meat into thin strips and drying it. There was enough that was not dried that everyone in the Clan got to eat steak that night. Drying that much meat meant that it took all day, night and most of the next day. On the second night, there was a hunting dance and Hac was made a hunter. And to most of the Clan’s surprise, he was mated to Durciza and Ura.

Hac tapped, Durciza, then Ura on the shoulder. As they stood, he walked to their hearth, his new mates following. They already had a hearth. Now it had become his. Hac’s thought drifted back to how this happened.

“After this hunt, you’ll be a man,” signed Durciza.

“Who are your going to mate?” Ura asked.

“This boy is uncertain,” signed Hac.

“There are several men who have more than one mate,” signed Hac. “This boy supposes he could ask Creb to make one of them his mate. But they all seem happy with the mates they have. This boy supposes he will have to remain at Harr’s hearth until a girl becomes a new woman, perhaps dzini or Ida?”

“Do you have strong feelings for either of them?” Durciza asked.

“Not really,” signed Hac.

“What if he became our mate?” Ura signed.

“This woman wouldn’t mind,” signed Durciza. “It would be nice to have a man that hunts for us when our totems are defeated, as long as you understand that we are NOT traditional women of the Clan.”

“This boy knows that,” signed Hac. “You are two women mated to each other.”

“We are also both women-who-hunt,” signed Durciza. “Will to become angry if we catch something when your hunt has failed?”

“This boy grew up with Ayla at his hearth,“ signed Hac. “This boy is used to living with a skilled woman who hunts.”

“We are also both clanlunae,” signed Ura.

“It is normal for men of the Clan to use another man’s mate to Relieve his Needs when his mate in not available,” signed Durciza. “But as Clanlunae, we make ourselves more available to Relieve the Need of the men and women of the Clan.”

“We even Relieve each other’s Needs,” signed Ura.

“Yes . . . this boy has heard you,” signed Hac.

Both women were quite vocal when Sharing Pleasures. Durciza was almost as loud about it as Iga The Clanluna.

“If you will have him, this boy will ask for both of you to be his mates,” signed Hac.

When they arrived are their hearth, which was now Hac hearth, he looked at his new mates.

“This man is unsure what to do now,” signed Hac.

“What are you signing about?” Ura signed. “Iga said you were quite skilled at Relieving women’s Needs.”

“This b- man knows that,” signed Hac. “But which one of you does this man Signal first?”

“You could have us both at the same time,” signed Ura, as she and Durciza pulled him into a kiss that they both quickly deepened.

They had just had just finished planting the food crops. They had already done the spring care and planting of the magical garden.

“If the Clan Gathering is going to be here, we’ll need to do something to protect this from the women of other Clans,” signed Iza.

“This Weech was thinking that we need to cast the Hiding (Fidelitus Charm) to hide the gardens,” signed Uba. “We also need to do that for the snorkack and honey lovers.”

“Are you going to do that?” Ayla signed.

“This Weech could . . . but it would be better if Harr cast it and used this Weech’s wand to do it,” signed Uba.

And so Harr used the Elder Wand cast the Fidelitus Charm several times on the Magical garden, the edible garden, the Snorkack coral and the small side cave used by the Cave Bears. Uba was the Secret Keeper for this casting and she quickly signed the secret to the rest of the Clan. This was just in the nick of time because, Shortly after She shared the secret with Hac and Durciza, who had just come out of seclusion, Morg’s Clan arrived.
