Chapter 75: Clans arrive
Creb looked up from the wand he was carving. Another Clan was approaching. He could see Morg in the Lead, with his second ranked Hunter and mog-ur behind him. After them were the rest of the men, then the women, with one man guarding the rear. Creb stood up and waved Thonlan, Harr and Lun to him. Once they were gathered together they stepped forward to meet the new Clan.
“This Leader great you,” signed Creb.
“The Mog-Ur is now a Leader?” Morg signed. “What happened to Broud?”
“Broud has died,” signed Creb. “This man is Leader of his Clan now.”
“Are you certain that you are a Clan?” Morg signed, as he eyed Harr and Thonlan. “It looks like more like a clan of Others and deformed people.”
“Lun is NOT deformed,” signed Creb. “He is part Clan and part Others. His mother is of the Others. And he is highly skilled as a mog-ur, a worthy successor to this man.”
“It looks like a lot of your Clan is part others,” signed Morg. “You shouldn’t let these men of the Others near your women. They appear to have defeated the totems of your women.”
‘This is Thonlan,” signed Creb. “He is highly skilled as a hunter and leads the hunts for our Clan. And this is Harr. He is the Second Ranked man in our Clan and is the most powerful Weez-Ur this Weez-Ur has ever seen. And Lun is our Clan’s mog-ur.”
“This Leader greets the men of Creb’s Clan,” signed Morg.
“Harr will show you where you can set up your lean-tos,” signed Creb.
Several more Clans arrived before the one Creb had been dreading.
Zab was still alive and leading his Clan. Though many of their older members that Creb knew were no longer with them.
But the last Clan to arrive was led by a former member of Broud’s Clan. Zorg approached the Clan Gathering leading a Clan of his own. Many of the Clan’s had fewer women that men. But Zorg had found the same solution he had found that led to his exit from his original Clan. For his Clan included women of the Others!
The members of Creb’s Clan had been learning the sound languages of the Others every winter. By now all of them understood and most of the people who were at least part Other could speak: Sharamudoi, Mamutoi, Zelandonii and English.
“Mio, this Leader wants you to speak with the Other’s women of Zorg’s Clan,” signed Creb.
“This woman will do that,” signed Mio. “Is there anything you want this woman to find out?”
“Remember how it felt when Groob put the spell on us to make us obey,” signed Creb.
“Oh yes! That felt very good!” signed Mio. “Though after it was over this woman was not happy about some of the things they made this woman do.”
“This Leader believes that Zorg has done the same with the women of the Others who have joined his Clan,” signed Creb. “Talk to them. Find out how they feel about being in a Clan and if Zorg is making them do things they would not ordinarily do.”
“This woman will do so,” signed Mio.
“Creb, this man wants to speak with you,” signed Zab.
“What do you wish to speak of?” signed Creb.
“This Leader wants three of your women,” signed Zab.
“You are welcome to use the women of our Clan to Relieve your Needs . . . as long as the women and their mates agree,” signed Creb.
“Why would it matter if the women agree?” Zab signed. “It doesn’t matter . . . This Leader is not asking to use your women. This Leader wants to HAVE them. We have many (three) men who have no mates. This Leader wants some of your women so he can give them to his men,” signed Zab. “But he wants the Clan ones, not the deformed ones.”
“If the women agree, this Leader will permit it,” signed Creb.
“What kind of Leader are you?” signed Zab. “It doesn’t matter what the women want. You have men with more than one mate. This Leader has men with no mate. Give us some of yours. And while you are at it, could one of the women you give us be a medicine woman? We don’t have one any more.”
“What happened to your medicine woman?” Creb signed.
“She died,” signed Zab, dismissively.
“This Leader will speak with the women of his Clan and their mate and think about it,” signed Creb. “This Leader will give you an answer, later.”
Over the evening meal, Creb gathered his whole Clan to the central fire.
“Many of the men of our Clan have more than one mate,“ signed Creb. “Zab has asked to have some of our women for the three of his men who have no mates. Also his Clan has no medicine woman. This Leader will not force any woman to leave us to join Zab’s Clan. But this Leader would like to know if any of you would be interesting in joining his Clan.”
“This woman would advise against it,” signed Abba. “This medicine woman heard from one of the women in Zab’s Clan that their medicine woman, Braca, was beaten to death by Zab during a tantrum and ever since then, their Clan has been sickly.”
“He beat my sister to death?!?” Iza signed.
“It is better to be a 3rd mate than to be in a Clan led by a man like that,” signed Iga.
“This Leader will not permit any of our women join a Clan where the Leader is so out of control,” signed Creb.
Mio was out gathering wild plants with some of the women from Zorg’s Clan, while Mog, one of the men from that Clan guarded them. Most of these women were of the Others, not Clan women. Usually gathering was done without conversation with frequent breaks to gossip. Clan women had difficulty using their hands to harvest plants and making signs at the same time. But women of the Other’s did not have the same limitation. So Mio could speak the Others’ mouth sounds without stopping work. The moved toward a woman of the Others from Zorg’s Clan and whispered:
“Do you understand Sungean?”
“Yes,” the woman whispered back.
“I am Jetamio, but my Clan name is Mio.”
“My name used to be Eriselenedipa,” whispered the woman. “But now it is Era.”
“How did you came to join a Clan?” asked Mio
“The men of Zorg’s Clan came and killed the men and boys of our Camp,” explained Era. “We fought them too, but suddenly I became content to be mated to Bog.”
“Did they wave sticks at you before you became happy?” Mio inquired.
“Yes! How did you know?” Era gushed. “Zorg waved a stick at me and suddenly I realized that I had always wanted to be mated to a Clan man. Did it happen like that for you too?”
“For me, I joined a Clan because I died giving birth and the Luna brought me and my baby back to life,” explained Mio. “After that, my mate and I joined the Luna’s Clan.”
“What is the Luna?” Era asked.
“She is a powerful spirit that takes the form of our Leader’s mate, Uba,” said Mio. “She wields powerful magic, more powerful than any weez-ur except Harr.”
“Harr is your Leader’s second?” Era asked.
“Enough with the mouth sounds!” Mog signed, after he cuffed Mio and Era. “Speak properly!”
“This woman apologizes,” signed Mio, the man from Zorg’s Clan.
Mog glared at her. He didn’t like this woman of the Others from the strange Clan using her strange Others’ sounds to say things that he couldn’t understand with a woman of his Clan. He needed to remind her of her place. Cuffing her did not seem to be enough. I would ask Zorg to take control of her later be for now . . .. Mog turned to Mio and gave her the Signal.
