The makeshift hockey rink at the end of the lane was buzzing with activity. Rolf was aggressively scraping extra ice with a shovel, while Ed, Eddy, and Sarah argued over team captains. A sudden hush fell over the frozen asphalt as Double D and Nazz walked up, with Jonny walking confidently between them. Tucked securely under Jonny's arm was Plank, wearing a tiny, makeshift hockey helmet cut from a hollowed-out tennis ball.
"Hey, look who's back!" Nazz announced cheerfully, gesturing to Jonny.
The reaction was instant. Eddy froze, his mouth dropping open as his eyes darted from Jonny’s knuckles to the wooden board. Ed gasped loudly, his face lighting up with pure, unadulterated joy.
"Jonny! Plank!" Ed bellowed, charging forward like a runaway freight train. He skated right past Jonny and grabbed Plank, weeping comical, giant tears.
"The board of brotherhood has returned from the splintery abyss!"
"Give him here, Ed!" Jonny laughed, pulling Plank back safely into his arms. "He's still recovering from his vacation." Eddy skated over slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. He looked at Jonny, then glanced down the street toward Kevin’s house, where the usual loud-mouthed bully was nowhere to be seen.
"So... uh... heard you really gave Kevin a piece of your mind yesterday, melon-head. Nice job. Didn't know you had it in ya."
"Plank did most of the strategy," Jonny smirked, tapping the board.
"May the soil never reject you again, Wood-Boy," Rolf shouted from across the ice, raising his hockey stick in a solemn salute of respect. "The son of a shepherd honors your triumphant return!"
"Alright, enough jawing!" Sarah snapped, though she didn't look nearly as angry as usual. She shoved a hockey stick into Jonny's hands. "Jonny's on my team. Plank can be the goalie's assistant."Jonny looked at the stick, then down at Plank's freshly painted smile. He dropped the stick to the ice, took his stance, and looked out over the cul-de-sac. The cold winter air didn't feel biting anymore; it felt welcoming.
"You ready, Plank?" Jonny whispered.Plank didn't say a word, but everyone knew he was ready to play.
