Jonny finally snaps and beats Kevin in a public showdown.
0Unrated
The sun was shining down on the cul-de-sac, casting long shadows over the newly repaired pavement. Life had supposedly returned to normal after the great chaos with Eddy’s brother. The Eds had been accepted, smiles were shared, and jawbreakers were being passed around. But for Jonny, things weren't fixed. He stood near the lane, clutching Plank tighter than ever, watching the rest of the kids laugh together.
Kevin rolled up on his bicycle, spinning the handlebars with a cocky grin. He spotted Jonny and decided to make an easy target out of him, just like old times.
"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Kevin sneered, hopping off his bike and tossing it aside. "Hey, lightbulb head. Where’s your imaginary piece of wood going? Gonna build a fortress to hide from reality?" The other kids turned, watching with mild amusement. Kevin stepped closer, shoving Jonny lightly by the shoulder. "C'mon, freak. Drop the plank and say uncle."
Something inside Jonny broke. It wasn't a conscious choice. It was a sudden, blinding accumulation of every silent mockery, every shove into the dirt, every time he was left behind, and the absolute humiliation of being cast aside while everyone else pretended to hold hands.
Without a word, Jonny dropped Plank. His eyes widened into a fierce, unblinking glare. Kevin laughed, raising a hand to flick Plank's painted face, but Jonny lunged. It was a furious, tidal-wave assault straight out of a nightmare. Jonny didn't throw ordinary punches; he flew at Kevin with a howling, guttural roar that shocked the entire cul-de-sac into absolute silence. He slammed Kevin back against the pavement, landing blow after fast, relentless blow. Kevin, entirely caught off guard by the sheer, unbridled fury of the usually docile boy, flailed defensively under the barrage, his cool demeanor shattering instantly. Jonny straddled him, his fists flying in a blur of righteous, pent-up vengeance, a stream of incomprehensible, passionate gibberish tearing from his throat.
"Jonny! Stop! Stop this instant!" Double D (Edd) sprinted into the center of the circle, his hands waving frantically in distress, dropping his jawbreaker into the grass. Right behind him, Nazz rushed forward, her face a mask of shock and worry. Nazz grabbed Jonny’s shoulders, pulling him back with surprising strength. "Jonny, stop it! You're gonna seriously hurt him!" Jonny scrambled back, chest heaving, tears of pure exhaustion and frustration welling in his eyes. On the ground, a bruised and dazed Kevin groaned, clutching his jaw, completely speechless.
"Why?!" Double D breathed out, adjusting his tilted beanie, looking between a weeping Jonny and a humiliated Kevin. "Jonny, violence is never the proper resolution to interpersonal conflict! What on earth possessed you to act with such ferocity?"
Jonny clutched Plank to his chest, his whole body trembling. He looked around at the circle of kids—the same kids who had chased him, laughed at him, and forgotten him.
"Because I'm invisible!" Jonny cried out, his voice cracking, hot tears spilling down his cheeks. "You all got your happy ending! You forgave the Eds, you all started sharing and laughing, but I’m still just the weirdo you step around! You treat Plank like garbage, and you treat me like a joke! I didn’t want to be a joke anymore!"
Silence blanketed the cul-de-sac. The anger drained completely out of the crowd. Nazz looked down, her expression softening into deep remorse. She knelt beside Jonny, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "Oh, Jonny... we didn't realize. We were so caught up in our own mess with the Eds that we completely pushed you to the side. I am so, so sorry." Double D stepped forward, his posture drooping with genuine guilt. "Nazz is entirely correct. In our pursuit of harmony, we neglected our duty as neighbors and friends to include everyone. Our oversight was callous, Jonny."
Kevin slowly pushed himself up from the ground, rubbing a sore spot on his cheek. He looked at Jonny—really looked at him—for the first time. The bullyish swagger was gone, replaced by a humbling realization.
Kevin wiped his lip, walked over, and offered a small, hesitant nod. "Man... you pack a punch. And... yeah. I was a jerk to you. Every day. I'm sorry, Jonny."
Jonny sniffled, looking down at Plank, then back up at the group. Slowly, Nazz smiled and opened her arms. Double D nodded warmly, and even Kevin gave an accepting, respectful tilt of his head. Hand in hand, the neighborhood opened its circle, welcoming Jonny back not as an outcast, but as one of their own.
