The sun was just beginning to rise as Pete, Andy, Joe, Patrick, and Kylie got home. Pete unlocked the door and immediately went for the refrigerator. Patrick turned on the TV to watch the news and Andy went for band-aids and disinfectant. Kylie got ice packs out of the refrigerator.
Joe sat down at the table and groaned, "I've made up my mind: trying to fight vampires bigger than you is not something fun to do!" Kylie tossed him an ice pack and he pressed it over his black eye.
"You can say that again," Andy said as he came back downstairs and started patching up his cuts.
"Those vampires were insane," Pete said. "I don't think they liked it to much when we interrupted their little feeding frenzy."
Kylie sat down and shook her head, "Those are the type of vampires The Agency needs you guys to get rid of. They prey on innocent people and bite anyone they can just for fun."
"So not cool!" Joe groaned again.
Pete yawned, "I'm going to bed."
"Count me-" Andy started.
"Shut up!" Kylie snapped. She listened intently to the news.
The reporter was standing with a vampire. But not just any vampire, it was Mariano. "After an attack and arrest tonight, the Chief of Police has agreed to release two vampires to enlist in a recovery program. Can you tell us how this program will benefit these vampires?"
The reporter handed the microphone to Mariano, "Well, you see, statistics show that just throwing vampires in prison doesn't improve the behavioral issues. My program will convert past criminal offenders to more well-rounded and suitable citizens."
The scene then switched to more recent reports of arrests and crime rates.
Kylie couldn't believe what she was hearing. Pete and Andy had paused midway up the staircase and stared at the TV in disbelief.
"Where is he getting his statistics?" as usual, Joe was the first one to break the silence.
"Do they know that Mariano is a vampire?" Patrick asked.
"It's kind of hard to miss his fangs," Andy was trying to convince his self more than anything else.
"This is not happening," Kylie called her dad on her cell phone. After about five minutes of conversation, she gave the others a report, "Everyone at The Agency is pretty much freaked out. They're getting together a group of protesters to try to see the Chief of Police."
Pete finally said something, "Is there anything we can do?"
Kylie shook her head, "My dad says it's just best if we lay low. I still think he has trust issues with all of us," she added as a second thought.
"Well, I'm going to bed," Andy walked past Pete and up the stairs.
"Wait for me!" Joe followed Andy up.
Pete walked back down the stairs and sat on the couch. Patrick and Kylie cleaned up the band-aid wrappers and melted ice packs. Patrick also then headed on upstairs. Kylie went over and sat down next to Pete, who turned off the TV.
"OK, what's wrong?" Kylie asked. You can always tell when something's bugging him, he gets all moody.
Pete sighed, "Why can't your dad just trust us? He totally hates me, just like the freak I am..."
Kylie was exasperated. "You are not a freak! And it's just in my dad's nature to have issues trusting us."
"But you're his daughter!" Pete was irritated.
Kylie looked gloomily at the floor, "I know Pete, but he always said I was more like my mom than him. I think I remind him too much of her..."
Pete shook his head, "That doesn't matter, he shouldn't push you away."
"Like your parents are any better," Kylie immediately knew she had gone too far.
"My parents are scum," and with that Pete stood up angrily. Why did she have to mention that?
Kylie grabbed Pete and looked him straight in the eyes, "You can not keep running away from this! They are your parents! Sure, they called you a freak and totally disowned you, but they wanted a kid, and this is what they got!"
Pete glared at Kylie, "You don't know what you're talking about, so just drop it! And they got a complete loser for a son!" He turned and started to walk away.
Kylie pushed Pete up against the wall, "Stop tearing your self apart. You're a great person Pete. You should have told your parents you were a vampire way sooner than a week ago. And you just have to give them time to adjust to the idea."
"Kylie, they told me to stay away," Pete didn't want to talk about this. They don't love me anymore, no one loves me. I'm just some hopeless, lost cause.
"But they're your parents. They really do love you deep down, just like I know my dad loves me no matter what he does and how far away he pushes me. You just have to make the effort to show them that you're here to stay," Kylie smiled, hoping it would cheer Pete up.
Pete looked away, trying to hide his tears. Why have I become such an emotional train wreck? "Why can't they just accept who I am? I was never good enough for them..."
"Pete, give them time. I'd be a little freaked out if my son blows up and just leaves, completely disappears, then comes back home one day to say he's a vampire," Kylie finally let go of Pete.
He sighed, "Whatever, but if they don't want me around, I'm not gonna try to change that."
Kylie laughed, "You are so stubborn and determined not to give in first."
"Look who's talking," Pete smiled sadly.

Two more weeks passed, and Mariano's power grew. He had convinced the Chief of Police to hand him over vampires on several more occasions. Protests by The Agency were useless, and everyone had to be more careful. The police had gone on an arresting frenzy. Very bad.
Patrick groaned, "They gave that crazy Dandy three more vampires!"
"Patrick, turn off the TV and get over here!" Andy yelled from behind his drum set.
"Yes! We need our vocalist and guitarist!" Joe held out Patrick's guitar. Patrick got up and grabbed his guitar.
"Finally," Pete actually smiled. He only was really happy when he got to play.
"Hang on, my cell phone's ringing," Kylie picked it up as the others watched. They had learned that Kylie's cell phone was the bearer of bad news.
"The Revolution has begun," a voice whispered in Kylie's ear.
She dropped her cell phone in shock. I know that voice...
