I raced downstairs and grabbed my jacket and purse. When I returned upstairs, Ryan was just tying his shoes. We made our way out the the driveway and into another small car. Two security guards drove this time across town to a movie theatre. Nothing looked that appealing, so we decided to rent one.
"I've been dying to see a movie, any movie. What sort do you like?," he asked.
"Really anything. Solaris was awful, but every other movie I've see I've liked," I answered.
The movie we picked happened to be one of my favorites, an old black and white by the name of "Casablanca." When we got back to the house, we made some popcorn. Ryan and I laughed through a good part of it as if we had been friends for a long time, not merely aquaintances for around a week, only 48 hours of which I had been conscious.
"I love that movie," said as we climbed in the car again. I was surprised people weren't flocking to the star that took the seat in the back beside me, but I was thankful.
"Yeah, it was a good one," he said. Suddenly, I heard Kelly Clarkson's voice coming from his pants pocket.
"Just a sec, it's Brendon," he said, pulling out his cell. I had to laugh. My brother had the same ringtone for me.
I pulled out my ipod and leaned back into the chair, letting the voice of Bing Crosby lull me to sleep.
"Anna, can you wake up?" Brendon said, touching my cheek.
My eyes slowly openned. "Where's Ryan?" I asked, looking around.
Brendon pretended to look hurt. "What? Am I not good enough for you?" he asked.
I laughed. "I'm sorry, but you just can't measure up to Ryan's maturity," I replied.
"Well, if you must know, he had to go practice. You'll have to suffer through with me," he said, smiling again.
"Aww, too bad. Wanna play a game?" I asked, giggling.
"Sure. What were you thinking? Doctor?" he asked with a smirk.
"You wish. I was thinking more like cards," I said, producing a deck from my purse.
"Whoa! These are sweet!" he said, taking them from me.
"What can I say? Tim Burton is a fucking genius," I said, taking back my beloved Edward Scissorhands cards.
"What will it be? War?" I asked as we found our way back to the kitchen.
"Sure. I'll deal," he said, sitting down.
We played for only about a half an hour, before Brendon became frustrated.
"Jealous at my mad war skills?" I asked, beating him again.
"Ugg. Let's do something else," he said, putting the cards back into their tin. "Let's go out into the den. I love that couch," he began walking.
I followed and sat down on the couch. Brendon thankfully sat a good distance away.
"So how are you?" he asked after a minute of silence. "Having a good birthday?"
"I guess," I said. "Things here are great, and make me never want to go home. Home just isn't a good place right now."
"What do you mean?" he asked, taking my hand.
I ignored his gesture, and told him about my mother, the phone conversation, my brother. Basically poured out everything that hurt. When I finished, without crying I might add, he pulled me into what was supposed to be a hug, but ended up on top of me. At first I was scared, my mind telling me to stop this, but all rational went out the window. We lay there like that for a while. I could hear his heart beat. It made the most beautiful tune. I closed my eyes, listening to it.
"Shit," Brendon said, quickly but carefully getting up off the couch. "Keep your eyes closed" he warned.
Soon I heard the door open, and I could hear Jen and Ilana talking about cake.
"Hey girls, Anna's asleep, care to keep it down?" Brendon loudly whispered.
They stopped and all three retreated into the kitchen in whispers. I got up and followed soon after. Brendon was gone, but Ilana and Jen were sitting, drinking tea.
"What have you guys been up to today?" I asked, taking a seat.
"Shopping" Ilana said as Jen said "sightseeing."
They looked at each other. "We were sightseeing, but of course, we are girls and have to shop!" Jen said after a momment. I laughed.
"Sounds like fun," I said. "But I'm dying to go running or something."
"I don't know Anna. I'm pretty tired. I think Jen is too. We were just talking about taking a nap," Ilana said.
"Brendon left," Jen added. "I think Jon should be back soon. Or Spencer. Maybe they'd want to go."
"Alright. Have a good nap. Do you want me to wake you guys?" I asked.
"Naw, don't worry about it. See you later tonight, okay?" Jen said, putting her and Ilana's cups in the dishwasher.
"Yep," I answered, following them downstairs. I grabbed my homework, remembering that once again, I was still in college. I hauled the books upstairs and spread them out over the couch and coffee table. Not 15 minutes after starting, Spencer and Jon both walked in.
"What are you doing?" Jon asked, noticing a nude painting in one of the books.
"Studying for my art history exam that I have when I get back. I also have a biology lab. I do go to college, you know," I said taking it back.
"Yeah, but still. Homework. Yuck!" Spencer replied.
"I know, but I sort of have to. I'm not in the most popular band at the momment like some people in this room," I laughed.
"Well, actually, you sort of are now," Jon pointed out. I laughed. The statement gave me chills.
They walked to thier rooms, and left me to my homework. Although they were right, and it was probably going to be too hard to finish this semester, I didn't want to give up that easily.
