The next day she was at work, tying up the last minute details of her presentation when her desk phone rang.
"Litzy Ekhart," she answered.
"Hi Litzy," Davey said. "Are you busy?"
She was beyond shocked to hear from him and she had mixed feelings about it. Part of her was so glad he hadn't forgotten all about her. But the other part reminded her that he had nerve to be calling her at all. And at work, no less. She decided to remain detached and see what he had to say.
"Busy is the nature of the PR industry," she said. "But what can I do for you?"
"Litzy...I just called to tell you that I am so sorry."
It sounded like he really meant it. She felt tears sting her eyes and she had to blink them back.
"I'm just so fucking sorry, Litz. What happened between us was huge and I got scared and...I made a mistake. I never meant to hurt you and when I got your message I knew how much I did. And I'm sorry."
She couldn't speak. She was about to start bawling at her desk.
"I miss you so much, you have no idea. Nobody understands me -"
"Oh, I'm sure your boyfriend, Tyler, understands you just fine," she said, coolly.
He went dead quiet for a moment.
"This is complicated, I know."
"No, not for me. For me its really simple. I now know that you are not someone I can trust, henceforth, we cannot be friends. That's reality. And I am a realist."
"You can trust me -"
"How?! You hurt me so badly..." she said, tears spilling over and landing on her desk. "I dont even know why I'm talking to you."
"I'm glad you are, because we need to talk. We need to work this out. In person. Will you come see me? We're in New York for a few days for the VMAs -"
"No. Are you crazy?"
"Please, Litzy? I love you -"
"Stop. Dont even go there -
"I dont know if I can love you the way you probably need me to, but I do love you. And miss you."
She had to hold her head and take a moment to fight back the tears.
"I cant. I finally got promoted. I'm working insane hours now, I cant take off."
"So maybe I can come there to Chicago?"
"Maybe."
"Really?"
"I dont know, Davey. I have to go, I dont feel so hot."
"What's the matter?"
"Stress. I have a big presentation today and I'm not gonna feel any better until it's over."
"Well good luck. I'll call you tonight to see how it went."
"Sure you will," she scoffed.
"Really, I will. Talk to you later."
"Okay."
She hung up and sat there wondering what she was doing. Letting Davey back into her life? That couldn't be a good thing. And she still didn't understand. When he said he loved her, what was that supposed to mean? How was she supposed to interpret that? Especially when he had a boyfriend?
Her assistant, Paige, rapped on her doorway.
"Ready to wow them with your expertise?" she asked.
"As ready as I'm gonna be," she replied, standing up and straightening her skirt and hair. "Let's go."
The meeting was being held in the big meeting room with the circular setup and the PowerPoint projection screen. There were carefully-crafted proposals in addition to the powerpoint. Thankfully, it was Paige's job to handle the Powerpoint transitions, leaving her free to explain it and then pass out the proposals. Her boss was eyeing her like a vulture as everyone came in and took their seats. This was Litzy's first major proposal and she was looking to see a winner.
Litzy greeted everyone and began her presentation. Everything was going wonderfully. She showed the client what their need was as far as communications and demonstrated how her firm could meet it by going through examples, statistics and testimonials. Then it was time for her to present her team's idea for a campaign.
She went over to the table to grab the proposals and give them out, and that was when something terrible happened. The queasiness that had been nagging her all morning suddenly made a quick and violent attack, resulting in a spontaneous upheaval...all over the proposals. The entire room seemed to let out a horrified gasp, and then she got all lightheaded, which combined with the shock of her spectacularly ruined presentation, was enough to land her in a heap on the floor, passed out.
She came to in the bathroom with her boss, Melinda, smacking her face and Paige sprinkling her with water.
"Oh my God. You scared me. I called an ambulance," Melinda said.
She wasn't a terrible woman, she just came across as a bit serious and severe at times. She was thin and regal with dark red hair that she always wore in a French twist.
"I'm fine," Litzy said, sitting up. "What happened?"
"That's what I'd like to know. One minute you were fine and the next you puked on two months of your team's hard work and embarrassed the entire firm. Now, are you pregnant?"
Litzy's brow furrowed. Why would she ask her something like that? There was no way...She quickly did the math in her head.
'OH MY GOD.'
"Of course not," she said, struggling to her feet. "I just think I have a mild case of the stomach flu. Melinda I am so sorry -"
She waved her hand.
"No need to apologize, we all fall ill sometimes. Take a few days off. Come back when you're sure you wont puke on anything or anyone," she said, with a half smile. "I'll handle the client."
"Thank you so much, Melinda."
"Thank me by getting well," she said, squeezing her arm and leaving.
Paige stood there giving her a knowing look.
"You are, aren't you?" she whispered.
"Are what?" she asked, heading to her office to grab her bag.
"You know what!" she hissed, following.
"NO I AM NOT," she hissed back, going in her office and slamming the door.
'At least, dear God, I hope not,' she thought, grabbing her purse and coat. 'Because that would mean career death and right about now my career is all I've got.
"Litzy Ekhart," she answered.
