Chapter 3
"Ms. Trent, Dr. Richards is ready for you." Said a nurse holding a clip board. She was wearing scrubs and a smile. Helga put down her magazine and we all got up. We were an unsightly bunch. Tim had a concerned look on his face. I was a bit more composed but still a little unstable from the ordeal at lunch. We followed the nurse into a room where she had Helga sit on a table bed and Tim and I sat in the extra chairs.
"He'll be with you in a moment." She said laying down a clip board and leaving the room. After she shut the door we were all silent. Helga looked tired and was running her fingers through her hair. She was worried.
"What are you going to do, Helga, if you are?" said Tim suddenly flustered.
"If I'm what?" snapped back Helga looking him straight in the eye.
"If your pregnant! What will you do? Are you going to keep it? How will you pay for it? What will you do?"
"I don't know Tim." She said in a quiet voice looking at the floor. "I just don't know." I sighed and crossed my legs. I got my cell phone out of my purse and set it to vibrate. The doctor came in. We all looked up.
"Hello miss....Trent." He said looking down at the clipboard. "I'm Darin Richards, I understand, you want to get a pregnancy test?" He said looking up at her.
"Yes I do." She said not sounding to thrilled, but I mean would you sound thrilled if you were at a doctor's office getting a pregnancy test and had a home life just about as happy as Eye ore when his stupid house of sticks goes crushing down when a butterfly gracefully lands on the top? I don't think so.
"Ok, come with me please." We all stood up but he looked at us and said "Oh, you two will have to stay here." Tim and I reluctantly sat back down and watched Helga and Doctor Richards get smaller and smaller as they walked down the hallway until a passing nurse shut the door.
"What do you think will happen?" I said looking at Tim.
"I have no idea." He said looking at me. He got up and walked around the room with his hands in his pockets and his eyes on the ceiling.
"Sam, I have to tell you something." He said looking at me.
"Ok, what is it?" I said surprised. I sat up straight and Tim sat down again. He looked so close to tears.
"I'm in love with Helga." Wow. I did NOT expect that at all. Those five simple words hit me like a geo prism on I57 at rush hour.
"Oh my god!" I said. Then I said that again. And again. And I'm pretty sure I said it once again. I stood up.
"You are?" I said looking at him as I smiled. He smiled too and gave a little laugh.
"Crazy for her. I can never stop thinking about her, and I care about her so much." He said. "I know." I said sitting down and giving him a hug. "That is so sweet."
"You can't tell her Sam." He said rubbing his face.
"I won't" I said back. Even though we all had been friends for so long I didn't even think that Tim would ever love Helga more than a brother or a friend. My cell phone vibrated and took me by surprise. I took it out and looked at the screen. Derik.
I flipped it open.
"What do you want?" I hissed.
"What do I want? What the hell is wrong with you Sam?"
"Don't even try to blame me Derik, don't even try! You and your jackass friend Andy humiliated and hurt my best friend so you can shut up! Do you know where I am Derik? And where Tim is? And where Andy didn't have the guts to come to?"
"No."
"I am at the doctor's office."
"Oh my god this is for real." He said.
"We don't know yet she's getting tested."
"Oh. Sam, why are you mad at me? It was Andy's fault."
"Derik, the fact that I'm mad at you has nothing to do with the fact that Helga might be pregnant."
"Then why are you mad at me?" He asked.
"You and your stupid lies. You and I use to have something. Helga and Tim too, we all had something, we were friends. Then you became a total sell out and just dropped us like that. You lie, and cheat and lie and cheat some more. All you care about is yourself, and that's not what a friend is. So please just do me a favor and get out of my life!" I slammed the phone shut and put it in my purse.
"Ouch." Said Tim, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair. "Bet that hurt." He looked at me as if I was being to hard on him.
"Ya, well he can find himself a freaking band-aid!" Tim laughed. The doctor came back in with Helga.
"We will be with you folks in a moment." He said and left the room.
"You know Sam I don't know what the hell to do."
"Why are you so worried?" I said, she wasn't one to worry much.
"Sam, I already took two at home, I had bought those little stripe things at the drug store, this is just like a re-assure thing." She said.
"Oh my god, was it positive?" asked Tim. Both of us stood up.
"Ya, it was."
"Oh my god, Helga why didn't you say anything?"
"I don't know, but those things never work, I mean It's probly wrong." The doctor came back in.
"Well miss Trent, you are indeed pregnant." No. This couldn't be happening. She wasn't pregnant. No,no,no. Tim started to breath heavily. Oh my god! This was crazy!
"Well, you know most of the fathers don't come along with the mother so you're a very promising couple." Akward moment, I thought. He left the room, after telling us he would be right back and that he had to tend to some other patient. I was so surprised at what the next thing was that somebody said next...
"Ya, we are." Said Helga, starting to cry and embracing Tim.
Not even Tim expected that.
