The next day, Charlotte decided to see how Emma's hip was doing. So she fed her dog (remembering she hadn't fed it in two days), took a shower, and decided to walk to Mercy Children's Hospital. She decided a four long walk would do her good after her two days of just lying around.
A refreshing cool breeze brushed against her body the entire walk. The temperature was dropping everyday, with Thanksgiving coming up in just five days. Shops passed by just as the wind. Charlotte thought it would be a nice gesture to bring Emma a little gift, so she walked into a small little gift shop called The Imperial Trinket. As she browsed through the small space, she decided to call Gerard.
Phone Conversation
"Hello?"
"Hey Gerard it's me."
"Hey, sunshine," she could hear him sitting up in his bed.
"Alright, so I'm gonna visit Emma and I decided to pick her up a little something. Is there anything you want me to give her, for you?" There was a small pause as Gerard thought.
"Uhh, yeah, but I'd rather give it to her in person though."
"Okay, I'll come see you after Emma then,"
"Till then sunshine."
"Till then."

The conversation brought Charlotte's mood down a bit because she was hoping for a little hint as to what Emma would like. Wondering towards the back corner of the shop, Charlotte saw some toys she played with when she was Emma's age. She rummaged around the piles of toys lying all over the floor.
Finally, an object, leaning against a jewelry box, caught her eye. It was a medium sized snow globe with a purple unicorn, standing in the middle of a field. Multicolored pieces of paper were scattered across the bottom of the trinket, ready to be moved at the will of the beholder. A small crank indicated that it played music, Charlotte twisted it around and listened to the sweet melody of the music.
It was decided, the snow globe would be Charlotte's get well soon gift to Emma. The rest of the walk didn't seem that long, even though she had to stop a few times to make sure the present wasn't cracked from Charlotte's swinging of the bag it was in. Amazingly enough, she was having a good time walking by herself. So much, in fact, that it seemed like only two minutes had passed when the Mercy's Children's Hospital building appeared before her.
Since the gift shop was on the first floor, there didn't seem to be much harm in picking up some balloons for Emma. Deciding it would be annoying to see the words "Get Well Soon" hovering above your head all day, she went with smiley faces instead. Being once again, confused in a hospital, Charlotte went to see the receptionist.
"Excuse me." This woman was much younger than the one at Gerard's hospital. Politer too, she thought to herself.
"I'm looking for a little girl named Emma. I'm not sure what her last name is but her hip was hurt in a car accident."
"Oh, well, we have two Emma's here today," Dang it, Charlotte thought to herself.
"There is a little eight year old with short blonde hair, and these gorgeous green eyes!"
"That's her! About yay high?" she lowered her hand to her waist.
"I believe so, you can find her in room....211 on the.....fourth floor."
"Thank you, very much." Charlotte skipped to the elevator. She felt like a little kid again, when she repeatedly pushed the elevator button. But she was alone so she didn't care. The floor numbers blinked above her head and she watched them light up. 1.....2.....3.....4! A yelp of excitement escaped her body when the doors began to slide open.
211...211, huh I can't find, no wait there's 210!!
The pleasure inside Charlotte had no chance of being contained. So without any shame whatsoever, Charlotte once again skipped down the hallway towards Emma's room.
"Emma?" Charlotte asked in a hushed tone.
"Yes? Hi, Charlotte!"
The room was brightly colored with almost no white in it at all. It was as if a rainbow had decided to take a nap on anything it could touch. A toy chest and a play mat were set aside in the corner by the door. An extra bed was next to Emma's bed on the far side of the room, it's curtain pulled around so .Emma was lying on her bed, watching cartoons. She seemed to be much more happier than she had been a couple of days ago.
"How are you sweetheart?" a warm smile planted itself on her face.
"Great, I made a new friend!" Emma's skinny arm pointed towards the bed next to her's.
"So, what's their name?"
"His name's Charlie."
"Oh," Charlotte felt a protective motherly feeling, towards the kid she hadn't even met.
"Before I forget, here," she handed the bag plastic bag to Emma. Her heart completely melted when she saw the sparkle in her eye, when Emma took out the snow globe.
"Thank you so much Charlotte," Emma's gaunt arms were felt around Charlotte's waist. She could only wonder what Gerard's visit would be like.
"By the way, Gerard wants to see you when he get's out of the hospital." Fear struck in Emma's cat-like eyes.
"What do you mean?" her voice quivered as she asked the question.
"He said he wanted to give you something, a present. He didn't tell me what though." Tears welled up in the little girl's eyes.
"Oh, what's wrong honey?"
"I don't want to see Gerard."
"Why not? He's very sweet."
"How do you know that? How do you know he's not going to hurt you?" the questions hit Charlotte hard.
"Because darling, he'd never do that. Gerard would never ever hurt anyone, unless he were protecting someone he truly cared about. Why would you ask something like that?" the child's innocent eyes wandered back to the TV.
"Well, if you ever want to talk just call me, or Gerard. Okay? You just have to trust him. If you spend a little more time with him you'll realize he's a really good guy. Trust me." Charlotte smiled and kissed the girl's forhead.
"I'm gonna go now but here's mine and Gerard's number," she took out a piece of paper from her purse and scribbled down the numbers.
"Bye sweetie," A wave came from Emma's direction as Charlotte walked out the door.
