Being as drained as she was, Charlotte called for a cab. It was only about ten minutes away but she would've collapsed half way there. Her ride consisted of looking out the window, watching the meter change numbers, biting her nails (not the best of all habits), and taking a short nap.
"Miss, we're at your destination," a man's voice alerted her.
"Oh thanks," she handed him the money for the ride.
She walked up the fronts steps of the hospital and rode in the elevator again. Although she wasn't as pumped about the buttons this time. She didn't skip either. The fact that she didn't know what was bothering her made her even more frustrated.
The doors slid open, and Charlotte walked to 306. Gerard was asleep when she walked in and thought he looked tranquil fast asleep. She climbed into bed with him wrapped her arms around his waist. Charlotte could feel him wake slightly. He turned himself around, while still in her arms.
"Hey, beautiful." he kissed her forehead slightly.
"Hey, gorgeous," she said back.
Gerard pulled her closer and let her fall asleep in his arms. She looked like all the life in her was sucked out. Now that he was awake, he couldn't go back to sleep (he hated when that happened) so he just softly caressed her face and twirled her hair for a bit. He was interrupted by rumble underneath his pillow. Slipping his hand carefully under the comforting item, he retrieved his cell phone. It didn't say who was calling him, but he took his chances and went ahead and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Gerard?" asked a small voice.
"Yes, who is this?"
"Me, Emma,"
"Oh, hey sugar. How are you?"
"I'm good. Are you all better?" What was he supposed to say? He could still barely move and his cuts probably wouldn't get any better.
"Uh, yeah just a little sore is all. They'll let me go next week, I want to see you after I get out."
"Okay, umm, Gerard?" He could feel her begin to cry.
"What's the matter, sweetheart?"
"Are you mad at me?" Her small voice squeaked.
"No, why would I? This is all my fault, had I kept my eyes on the road none of this would've happened."
"No, I ran away! You went after me! It's my fault," once again, Gerard could hear Emma sobbing and someone comforting her in the background. It was a little boy's voice. Gerard's parental control alert popped up.
"Emma it's okay, please stop crying. You just have to face the fact that this was all my fault. Please, I know it sounds a little weird, but it would make me feel a lot better if you said it was my fault." A long pause was followed but Gerard could still hear the little boy's voice in the background.
"It's okay, Emma. If this guy wants you to blame everything on him then I say go right ahead with it. But it really is your call." he heard the voice say. This made Gerard have slightly better feelings about the boy.
"Uhh, Emma, just wondering but who's the guy I hear talking to you?" Gerard wasn't sure if Emma would be comfortable or not be he felt he had a right to know.
"Oh that was just Charlie, he's, my roommate."
"Roomate?" this made him feel very uneasy.
"Yeah, do you want to talk to him?" she asked very enthusiastically. Kind of like Charlotte, Gerard thought.
"Why not? Go ahead and put him on, honey." Gerard tried to stay positive and but he just didn't want a GUY in the same room as Emma.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Charlie. This is Gerard I'm a friend of Emma's."
"Really? But Emma told me you were her dad," this truly touched his heart. This little girl had told someone that he was her father! He was speechless for a moment and then a hot tear ran down Gerard's cheek.
"Sir, are you still there?"
"Oh yes, sorry Charlie just Gerard sniffed spaced out for minute." He watched Charlotte as she turned in her sleep. His fingers running through her long, blonde and purple streaked hair.
"So Charlie, it sounds like you and Emma have become good friends."
"Yes Sir,"
"Charlie, can you do me a favor?"
"Yes sir?" Charlie's voice sounded unsure of the request.
"Could you please not be so formal and call me Gerard?"
"Oh yes si- I mean Gerard."
"Much better! Well, I can tell you're a little nervous so can I talk to Emma?"
"Okay, nice talking to you Gerard."
"Nice talking to you too Charlie."
"Hi Gerard,"
"Hi sweetie, so I guess I'll see you in a couple of days then. And don't even think I'll forget about your surprise."
"I won't, see you next week Gerard!" Emma's cheerful voice said.
"Alright, see you sugar!"

"Who was that?" Charlotte's groggy voice asked.
"Emma." Charlotte smiled, happy she could trust one of the most dependable men she would ever meet.
