BEEP BEEP BEEP
Gerard took the pillow from under his head and smothered the alarm clock with it.
"Gee, we gotta get up come on," Charlotte tried to get him our of bed but he just swatted her hand away.
"MMMMMMMMMMMM I don't wanna!" his hand lazily moved around everywhere.
"Come on we can't let Emma be alone on Thanksgiving."
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhh fine. For Emma!" he moaned.
"Go ahead and take a shower, Char. I'll have breakfast ready when you're out!" he kissed her as he walked down stairs.
"I'm the luckiest woman in the world!" Charlotte bellowed.
"Yes, you are! Now take a shower you smell!" he mimicked Charlotte's voice.
She smiled to herself and hopped into the shower. For some reason, Charlotte felt extremely lazy that day and even though she adored Emma she just didn't want to leave the house.
"Hello, my lovely," he flashed her that irresistible smile that just made her heart beat faster. Charlotte slid down the banister and landed in Gerard's arms. He kissed her lips and carried her to the kitchen. An aroma of mouth-watering food filled the air.
Gerard had set up the dining table with two chairs facing one another, a red table cloth, flowers, and lit candles. Charlotte kissed him affectionately and he set her down. He walked into the kitchen and walked back out with two plates with omelets, hash browns, bacon, waffles, and strawberries. Her plate was set in front of her and Gerard retreated back to the kitchen for the orange juice.
When he came back, he sat down and looked at Charlotte over the flames of the candles. He gave himself a smile of self satisfactory then kissed her over the table.
"I love you Gerard," she said while stabbing her fork into her omelet.
"I love you too Charlotte," she could tell he meant it from the bottom of his heart by the way he looked at her. He had such desire and happiness in his eye whenever he saw Charlotte.
She reached for the hand Gerard was letting sitting on the table. Charlotte gently caressed his fingers and palm. "He's so perfect," she thought to her self.
"Charlotte, can we talk?" Her heart skipped a beat. This could not be good news,
"Sure, baby. What's on you mind?" she felt tears coming, but tried her best to hold them back.
"Well, I was thinking about Emma," Charlotte let out a sigh of relief.
"What? You didn't think I wanted to leave you did you? After all my hard work on this breakfast?" Charlotte blushed, she should've known better than to think Gee would break her heart that way.
"Well, it's exactly the opposite, actually." Gerard stared at the candle and watched it melt for a moment.
"Charlotte, you and I get along GREAT!" charlotte laughed at Gerard's face when he emphasized the word great.
"I get along great with Emma. And you and Emma it's just you two are so close, I can see why people think she's our daughter." he smiled as he thought of Emma calling him "Daddy."
"And you are so sweet to her! You always go the extra mile just for her." Admiration filled Charlotte's eyes. Gerard gave her a shy smirk.
"So, what I'm really trying to say is...why don't we all move in together!" Charlotte gave a surprised, but happy look.
"What?"
"But we don't have to get married or anything.....I'm sorry, I didn't know whether things were going too fast for you and I took a risk and it blew up in my face." Gerard looked away from Charlotte and mumbled an apology. She walked around the table and gently squeezed him, minding his bruises. "My place, I don't want to be a burden to your parents?" Gerard broke a apart from Charlotte and looked at her with wonder. Then, a smile found it's way to his lips and they made out in the dining room.
"I think it's safe to say breakfast is over," Gerard smirked.
"Yeah, let's go. Just let me grab my purse and hoodie."
"You'll want to marry after this," he held up his finger and went back to the kitchen. I heard the clanging of pots and pans, then Gerard emerged from the door with Charlotte's purse and jacket in hand.
"Runaway with me," she said, in his arms dramatically.
"Later," then he picked her up bridal style and carried her to the car.
"What should we pick up from the gift shop for Emma?" Gerard was in the passenger seat and Charlotte was driving.
"I say we get the biggest teddy bear we can find and than get her some chocolates," Charlotte suggested.
"Alright, I wanna get some flowers for her too. You know, to kind of make up for not having jewelry this time."
"Gerard?"
"What's up?"
"You think we should get anything for Charlie? You know since he's the only friend she's got right now." Gerard gave her a weird look.
"I don't know, I just don't like that kid. I don't know why but I just...I just...sigh...I don't know," Charlotte smiled.
"Aw, how cute! You're having maternal instincts!" she grabbed his cheeks and kissed his forehead, having her eyes on the road the entire time to make sure she didn't hit anything.
"Leave me alone, I just don't want to see her get hurt,"
"Gerard try to keep in mind these are eight -year olds." She touched his shoulder. "Her biggest love is going to be a purple dinosaur! Plus you're just being protective, that's how all good parents act.
"Thanks hun," he laid his long, pale fingers on her knee. They pretty much just talked the rest of the two minutes in the car. Mostly, about Gerard's old memories of playing around the house with Mikey, his tough times through high school, and they traded a few embarrassing stories.
"Yay! Emma! Can you hear me?" he yelled out the window. "Woo, we're coming Emma!"
"Stop, we're in a hospital parking lot."
"Okay, let's go." he jumped out the car and went to open Charlotte's door for her but she didn't see him coming so...she slammed her door right into his body.
"Gerard! Oh, my god! Are you okay?" They were both on the ground. Gerard was caressing his nose that was dripping blood.
"I'm okay. I can take a punch, or a car door I guess." Charlotte helped him up as he still touched his nose.
"Honey, I'm so, so, sorry. Forgive me?" she opened her arms, waiting for a hug. He took his hand off of his nose for a moment, then put his arms around her waist. Then, they walked off to Emma's room.
"Knock, knock," Gerard slowly opened the door.
"Hi Gerard! Where's Charlotte?" Emma was lying down on her bed again, watching TV. Charlie did the same.
"Happy Thanksgiving you two. Hope you're both feeling a lot better," Charlotte dragged in a stuffed teddy bear that would tower over Emma.
"Wow," she walked over to the bear, careful not flaunt everything she had in her backless dress.
"Anything for you, doll face," Charlotte hugged.
"Here, these are for you," Gerard brought twelve blood-red long stem roses from behind his back.
"Thanks," as she gave him a hug Charlotte looked at Charlie. He was watching them hug too, and he gave off a sad smile, not seeing Charlotte observe him.
"Hi Charlie," Gerard said afterwards. Charlie gave a weak smile.
Then, the door burst open. It was an orderly, serving a late breakfast to the kids.
"Hello," she said at first "Are you this little girl's parents?" she asked.
"Yes, we are," Gerard's confident voice stated.
"Well, you know she can leave now, right? You just need to sign out with the receptionist." the orderly's voice was monotone and she had no feeling in her face. It made them wonder if it was a joke or not.
"Thank you, we'll do that." When the orderly left, both of them looked at Emma.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Gerard was almost screaming but his face didn't show it.
"I don't have anywhere to go." She looked down at the floor.
"Of course you do." Gerard gave her a sincerely hurt look. After all they had been through together, she thought they were just going to leave her.
"Me and Char, are gonna move in with each other, and we thought you could too." Gerard looked deep into Emma's eyes. They were exactly like his. Both sets of eyes were intense, dramatic, and beautiful. He could only wish that they were his exact genetics.
"Why?"
"Because we both love you very much, and we never want to let you go." Emma looked at Charlie who shrugged as if to say "it's not up to me", then gave her a sweet smile, similar to Gerard's. Charlotte could see it drove Emma crazy, like her with Gerard.
"Okay," she managed to squeal out, she looked back at Charlie with and gave him sorrowful look. Gerard and Charlotte both saw this, each of them having different effects by it.
"Uh, Gerard let's go sign Emma out, both of us, you know just in case." Gerard looked completely bewildered at what Charlotte had just suggested.
"Huh?"
"Come on," Charlotte grabbed Gerard's hand and led him out of the room.
"So," Charlie began.
"So," Emma echoed.
"I'm gonna miss having you around." Charlie opened his arms for a hug and Emma graciously accepted.
"Me too," Emma held him tighter.
"But maybe I'll see you again, I go to Foster Elementary, maybe I'll see you there."
"Yeah, maybe." Emma loosened her grip and tried to go back to her bed before Gerard walked in. She could always tell how he felt about Charlie. But something held her back, there was something about Charlie that made her feel safe and secure.
"I guess I'll see you then," Charlie kissed Emma's cheek and they both blushed.
"Charlotte let me go! I got to..." Gerard's face was pressed up against the small window in the door. He had been watching the scene with Charlotte's hand pressed against his mouth.
"Gerard, let them be," Charlotte couldn't hold him back anymore and Gerard slammed the handle. As he stumbled in, he tripped on the giant teddy bear and landed with a loud groan.
"Hey kids," Charlotte said shamefully. "I'm telling you, it's all karma, Gerard."
"Karma? If karma want to talk about karma, it's coming for you too! You were the one spying on her!" Gerard looked up at her.
"Shut up!" she motioned to the kids.
"Uhh, well everything's taken care of so we can pretty much go now." Emma was still holding Charlie, who Gerard was staring down. Charlie didn't seem to mind, actually he looked like he was having fun with it.
"So, umm let's get your things and we'll go." Charlotte tried to break the tension.
"Yeah," Emma reluctantly let go of Charlie.
"Here, take my jacket for now," Gerard put his Pink Floyd jacket and placed it on top of Emma's shoulders. It draped down to her knees and the sleeves could have been enough all on their own.
Charlotte walked out of the bathroom she found, with Emma's clothes in hand.
"Go change and we'll be on our way," she handed Emma the clothes and Emma walked to the bathroom.
The room was silent, no one could figure out a way to start a conversation. Charlie was twiddling his thumbs, Gerard was sitting on Emma's bed, watching Charlie twiddle his thumbs, and Charlotte sat in Gerard's lap, watching Gerard, watch Charlie.
"I'm ready," Emma walked out of the bathroom in the clothes she was wearing during the accident: a long denim skirt, a light blue t-shirt with a flower on it, and white sneakers. She walked over and gave Gerard his jacket back.
"Shall we go?" Gerard held out both of his arms and the girls locked their arms with his. Emma dragged the stuffed bear behind her and gave Charlie a sad wave as she walked out.
