Chapter 7
"Hi, are you Heather?" I asked her nervously even though I already knew it was her.
"Ya, are you Samantha?" she asked with her hand on her hip. She had black hair, not dark brown but black. It was impossibly straight and parted down the middle. I had to say, I was jealous. It was shiny, smooth, and went to the middle of her back. She was pretty, and wore a lot of make-up. She was wearing a white crop top and a pair of low rise jeans and black flip-flops. She had a belly-button ring too. I must have looked like a little kid with my heart T-shirt and braids in my hair.
"Ya," I said. "I'm Samantha." She walked over to the ledge where I was.
"Listen Samantha, Ryan, he's mine. I don't like you two hanging out." She pulled out a pack of cigarettes and put one in her mouth. She lit it and offered me a cigarette. I shook my head.
"I don't like Ryan, I don't want to get involved, we're just friends." I said. So far I didn't like her much.
"Ya, whatever," she said taking a puff of her cigarette. "Just don't hang around him all the time. It's annoying, and I don't like him hanging out with you."
"Listen, I'm not going to steal him away from you if that's what you're thinking, so I can hang out with him if I want-" but I was cut off by her.
"Shut up you little whore, don't think I don't know what you're trying to do." She said scrunching her eyebrows, using a nasty tone.
"I'm not trying to do anything, and don't call me that." I said using an equally nasty tone.
"Shut up bitch!" she practically yelled.
"Whatever." I said starting toward the door. How could Ryan date someone so horrible?
"Don't walk away from me you skank!" she said stepping in front of me. I just gave her a look. I didn't want this to turn into a fight.
"Don't give me dirty looks either." She said.
"You don't know me, so don't call me names. Ryan is my friend so I'm not going to stop hanging out with him just because you're too hung up on him having other friends, and you're the bitch here, not me." I said pushing her out of the way, and finally heading out the door. She started to say something more, but I just kept walking all the way to my room. Tessie had gone to bed, it was about 8:47. I changed into pajamas and called Helga.
"Oh my god what a bitch!" she said after I explained to her our encounter.
"I know, I have know idea why Ryan would go out with anyone so horrible." I said examining my nails.
"Oh, my gosh! Idea!" squealed Helga over the phone.
"What?"
"You have to look super, super hot tomorrow, I mean don't get me wrong you always look so cute, especially today I loved the shirt you wore, but now you have to look hot!"
"What, Helga come on what are you talking about?"
"You know, get some cloths or something and do something awesome with your hair! I'm coming over, we don't have much time!"
Before I could protest, she hung up. Twenty minutes later the doorbell rang. I answered the door and there was Helga with two wheeled suitcases. She came in and we went into my room.
"Ok, so one of these has my stuff in it for the sleepover, and the other one is stuff for you." Said Helga.
"For me?" I replied, shocked that she brought a whole suitcase for stuff for me.
"Ya, make-up and possible clothing choices," She said. "Now let's get to work."
She opened up her suitcase witch contained a few tops, a skirt, and some jeans. It also had about a ton of make-up, and a curler, crimper, and a straightner.
"I don't understand, what's the goal?"
"Sam, the goal is to make Ryan realize that it's you he wants, not that little ho-bag Heather. Also, she's gonna get really pissed when she sees you looking like miss hottie."
"Ok, first of all I don't want Ryan to 'want' me, and I don't even want him. Second of all, why do we want to make Heather more mad than she already is?" I was confused and wasn't really understanding Helga's logic.
"It's fun to tick of people like her and plus you so do want Ryan, and he wants you to, but Heather is in the way."
"Helga! I don't want Ryan!" I said.
"Stop lying." She said pulling out a bottle of water, and taking a big gulp.
"I'm not lying, and what is with you and water lately?"
"It's healthy. All I'm drinking is water, it's for the baby." She said pointing to her stomach.
"That's good." I said looking through the clothing she brought.
"Now admit it, you like Ryan."
"Yes I do, as a friend."
"Come on Sam, I can tell when you like someone." She said with a grin on her face. And the more I thought about it, was it true? Did I like Ryan? I couldn't like him I just met him like two days ago. And he had a girlfriend. He was nice, but I defiantly didn't like him like that.
"Helga, I don't like Ryan, so I will do this, but only to tick off Heather."
"Brilliant, but do you think we should wait until the last day of school? Just to amp up the drama?"
"Sure what the heck we can make me look like all cute like Baby Spice from the spice girls for tomorrow then on Friday I'll look like sexy Brittany Spears." I said with a smile.
"Exactly!" she said. So we talked until midnight, mostly about Tim since Helga couldn't shut up about him.
"It's just so cool that you guys are together." I said.
"I know, I really think that we'll last you know?" She said with a grin. And I did know. Tim was committed and he always took care of Helga. He wouldn't let anything ever happen to her. And she loved him.
"Ya, I think you guys are going to be really happy."
We went to bed around 12:30 and I got up at like 5:30. Helga had taken a shower and put her blonde hair in extremely small curlers at like 4:30 since she got up and couldn't sleep. I woke up an hour after her and she was watching Opera on my TV really quietly.
"Hey sleepy head." She said when I sat up and yawned. She turned on the light and I saw the curlers in her hair. I looked In my closet for something to wear. I chose pair of sparkly jeans, and a white tank top with a pink star in the middle. I put on a pair of pink flats and straightened my hair. I applied my make-up. Helga wore a pair of Red Capri-pants with red flats and a black T-shirt that said "Hello Loser" in red writing. When she took out her curlers, her hair was full of tiny spiral curls. It looked awesome.
She applied some make-up as well and we left at about 6:00. We went into the corner bakery and Ryan was almost done with his shift.
"Oh, hey Helga." Said Ryan.
"Hey Ryan, get us some coffee pronto." She said snapping her fingers. He grinned and made two coffees, which Helga paid for. He took off his apron and asked if we all wanted to take a subway together.
"That sounds fun, but uhhh." Said Helga looking nervously toward me.
"It's ok Helga, I can ride the subway now." I said.
"Oh, good." Said Helga. I noticed Ryan looked confused and he lipped the words 'whats up with the subway?' to Helga and she just shook her head. We walked out the door and started out toward the subway station.
"Helga, how on God's green earth did you get your hair like that?" asked Ryan, lightly touching her hair.
"Just put curlers in it this morning." She said with a shrug.
"God, I would hate to be a girl." Said Ryan with a laugh.
"It's not so bad." I said taking a sip of my coffee.
"It's just you guys work so hard to look so good, I mean how else would Sam look prettier than Heather?" then he stopped in his tracks and put his hands over his face. We looked back, me blushing and Helga giving me a nudge.
"Are you ok?" asked Helga. We both went back to him. He looked up, his face beat red.
"Did I just say that out loud?" he asked with a grin.
"Ya." Said me and Helga at the same time. I could tell that I was blushing big time, my face was so hot. He thought I was prettier than Heather. Not that it mattered.
"Oh God." He said, and started walking again. So did Helga and I. Helga was grinning at me. Will you guys just get over Heather, stop telling yourselves you don't love each other, and return to your normal facial colors?" said Helga, walking in the middle of me and Ryan, frustrated. She sped up, Leaving me and Ryan a bit behind, and right then we looked at each other, big grins on both of our faces, then looked away quickly, we caught up to Helga.
"Helga, would you stop making false assumptions and shut up?" I asked.
"No kidding." Said Ryan.
"Whatever." Said Helga. We got to the station, and got on the subway. Helga bought the tokens. On the subway ride to school I tried to gather my thoughts. I don't love Ryan, I just like him. As a friend. That's all. One thing was for sure though, I didn't like Heather at all. And the confusing part was, that it wasn't just because of the nasty things she said to me that made me not like her. It was something more. Something like her dating Ryan. But why should that bother me if I didn't like him? Or do I?
"Hi, are you Heather?" I asked her nervously even though I already knew it was her.
"Ya, are you Samantha?" she asked with her hand on her hip. She had black hair, not dark brown but black. It was impossibly straight and parted down the middle. I had to say, I was jealous.
