Chapter 6
"Have a nice day Sweetie, Goodbye!"
"No, mom wait!"
I sat up in my bed breathing heavily. I got up and looked at the clock.
1:13
I got a glass of water. Tessie was in bed. I decided I need some air. I changed into a pair of black track pants and a black Freeman High sweatshirt. I put my hair in a messy bun and slipped on some flip flops. I put on my watch, grabbed my purse and put my wallet inside. I scribbled something on a note and left it on the table incase Tessie got up. I headed out the door. It was dark, but the street lights were on, and there were lights on all over the city. I walked around for a while. I thought about Ryan. He had a girl friend. Where was she from? She didn't go to Freeman, I knew that, was she graduated?
I ended up taking a cab to Just Seattle. Go figure, they were still closed. Usually they were open late, but they weren't open at all today. I was walking when I thought about what Ryan had said about working the early shift. When did that start? I looked at my watch.
2:34
It's worth a shot. I walked to the Corner Bakery, and looked inside. Sure enough, there was Ryan putting on a green apron, yawning. I opened the door. There was a guy ordering coffee that Ryan got, and rang up with another yawn. The guy thanked him and went on his way.
"Hey sleeping beauty." I said to Ryan. His eyes didn't seem to want to open.
"Oh, hey!" said Ryan, surprised. His eyes opened all the way. "What are you doing here?" asked Ryan with a tired smile.
"Well, I woke up at like one something and I was taking a walk and thought you might be working since you said you worked the early shift. You are." I said.
"I am," He said with a sigh. "and I may just pass out from lack of sleep, I didn't go to bed until like eight thirty, and had to get up at about one."
"Well, I'm going to get a coffee." I said.
"Coming right up miss." He said with a grin. He gave me my coffee, muttering a 'moo' as he put the lid on. I laughed. I walked over to where there was cream cheese, jelly, butter, ah hah, French vanilla cream. I put two packs of cream into my coffee, stirred it, and put the lid back on.
"Well, hey I'm gonna go, but I'll come back at like six thirty if you want to take the subway again."
"Sure, sounds good. Get some more sleep for me will ya?"
"Sure thing. See ya in a bit." I said and walked out with my coffee. I came back home, Tessie still asleep. I threw away the un-read note, and went back to bed. I looked at the clock.
3:02
I fell asleep really fast. When I woke up again, my alarm woke me up. I sat up and changed into a denim mini skirt, and put on a Yellow T-shirt with orange hearts all over it. I slipped on a pair of orange flip flops, put my hair in two braids, and applied my make-up. I walked out of my room and Tessie was at the table as always.
"Hey, were you out last night?" asked Tessie.
"Ya, I couldn't sleep so I took a walk and got some coffee, I left a note incase you got up, but I was only out for a couple hours."
"Oh, ok that's fine, I just heard the door open and close a few times."
"Ok, well I"ll see you later." I said grabbing my bag and purse.
"Ok, have a nice day, be home by eight."
I walked out the door. I decided to walk to the corner bakery, stopping at Just Seattle first. I got a late' there and Polly explained that they closed the shop because Steve had to go see his Grandma, and the only back up they had called in sick, so she took the day off. She forgot to e-mail me and apologized about a thousand times.
"It's ok Polly, I'm gonna go."
"Ok bye Sammy!"
I walked to the corner Bakery just as Ryan was walking out the door.
"Hey Sam." He said.
"Hey. Ready to go?" I asked him, taking a sip of my late'.
"Ya, whatcha got there?" he asked pointing to the late'.
"Oh it's a mocha late' from Just Seattle."
"Ah, competition. I see how you are." I laughed. "Might I have a taste?"
"Uh, sure." He had a taste.
"Hmmmm, not bad not bad at all." He said with a shrug. "Do you go to Just Seattle a lot?" he asked.
"Ya, actually everyday except yesterday they were closed so that's why I went into Corner Bakery."
"Well I'm glad they were closed yesterday or we would have never met. Everything happens for a reason." He said.
"I guess so." We went to the subway station, this time I paid for the tokens. We got on, this time I wasn't reluctant, and we talked about what we were doing over the summer. I had nothing planned really, just to try and get a job, and to do a big project with Helga. Helga and I did something every summer, we called it the oasis, as it being summer, we needed something to do. One year, we did a car wash the whole time, everyday all summer, and raised three hundred dollars. We each got one hundred and fifty. Another year we enrolled in a play and ended up having a great performance. I was telling Ryan about our "Oasis" and he seemed to think it was awesome that we did this.
"What play was it?"
"Little Shop of Horrors. It was so fun."
"I love that play, what part were you?"
"I was the evil dentist receptionist and Helga got the part of Audrey."
"That's so cool! Is she a good singer?"
"Ya, she's amazing." It was true. Helga had a beautiful voice. Audrey was one of the main characters, and she sang a song called somewhere that's green. She was mentioned as outstanding in all the reviews.
"What are you guys doing this year?"
"I'm not sure." I said. He told me he wasn't doing anything much either, but He was planning on taking a road trip to Tybee Island, (It was a tourist attraction of the coast of Georgia.) with a few people. That sounded like fun.
We got off the subway, and walked up to Freeman High. Tim and Helga were waiting for us at our table.
"See Tim, don't they make a cute couple?"
"Shut up Helga, he has a girl friend." He looked at me, surprised. I hadn't even realized what I was saying until after I said it. Oh my god, he would find out I saw them on the roof yesterday and think I was a creepy stalker!
"You do?" asked Helga looking at Ryan. We all sat down.
"Uh, ya...but how did you know?" He asked me. Helga and Tim both looked at me at the same time. This, I found a little humorous.
"Well, I was going to go on the roof last night, but then I saw you kissing someone so I went back down to my apartment. I didn't want to like disrupt you or whatever."
"Ouch." Helga muttered under her breath.
"Oh, ya, sorry about that." He said.
"What's her name? Where's she from? How old is she?" Helga started throwing questions at him right away.
"God Helga, but in much?" I said sharply to her. Ryan laughed.
"It's fine. Her name is Heather, she's seventeen and goes to Bringston." That was why I hadn't seen her before. Bringston was from another county. Our football team creamed Bringston all the time. "My aunt's Best friend Kristen is Heather's mom, and Kristen is always over at my aunt and uncle's house all the time. So Heather comes over too, and we became friends for a while and she asked me out a few months ago." The bell rang. We all went to home room.
"So, what's the plan?" asked Helga in a whisper.
"What plan?" I whispered back.
"The plan to break up Heather and Ryan or course" She whispered back rolling her eyes as if it was obvious.
"There is no plan, I don't want them to break up and Ryan and I don't like each other."
"Ya, and the pope isn't catholic, and my dad is alive, and world peace is now in session. It's so obvious you guys like each other."
"Whatever." I replied. Mr. Wright walked in and took attendance. Classes flew by, no homework given. And when lunchtime came, we talked about summer plans, No one had anything much planned. The day ended and Helga said we were all going roller skating no questions asked.
"Yes mom." Said Ryan.
"Good boy." Said Helga messing up his hair in a playful way.
"Helga, I don't know how to roller skate." Said Tim. We all stopped in our tracks looking at Tim in disgust.
"You sicken me." I said to him.
"Dude were you deprived of you childhood?" asked Ryan.
"No, I've just never been."
"Don't worry babe, we'll teach you." Said Helga kissing him on the fore head. He laughed.
"Hope I don't break my spine." Said Tim. This was hilarious to me that Tim couldn't roller skate, because he was all muscles. He was really strong, played football, worked at a car repair shop, but couldn't roller skate.
We got there, everything came out of Helga's wallet she insisted. Ryan, Helga, and I rented our skates and got them on, and Tim said he didn't know what to do. Helga told me and Ryan to wait on the benches outside until they got back from the rental area. Ryan and I got something to drink, and sat on the benches. When Helga and Tim came out, the large amount of Dr. Pepper that was in my mouth came spraying out with laughter when I took a first glance of Tim. Ryan was laughing too. We couldn't breath.
"You guys are mean!" said Helga with a chuckle. Tim was wearing a pink helmet, pink knee pads, elbow pads, and those adjustable beginner skates. (all for little kids) When me and Ryan finally stopped laughing, Tim flipped us off. We laughed again. We all went out on the floor, Ryan skating normally, Helga holding Tim's hand, and helping him slowly around the floor. While I was doing flips and backwards skating, twists and twirls. I was awesome at skating, Me and Helga went all the time. From age twelve, all the way to seventeen, we loved it. Ryan tried to show me off by doing a few tricks, but I was better than him. Tim fell down eight times, laughing every time Helga helped him up, and then it was time for the glow stick skate. We were the only four people at the rink, and Tim and Ryan wanted to take a break. Helga and I got a glow stick. Ryan and Tim sat on the benches ready to watch us.
"Do you want to do that routine?" Helga asked.
"You know it." I replied. Helga and I always did an awesome routine that we made up in seventh grade whenever they had glow stick skate. The lights went out, and the black lights and disco ball gleamed over the floor. The music started, it was a techno song. Awsome. Helga and I started to skate around, doing criss-crosses and a few twirls. Then it really started. We did our jumps and backwards stuff, and then we did my favorite part toward the end, we got on opposite sides of the floor, started toward each other, then in the middle, we jump into the air, while doing a twirl, then landing on the other side of the room. We finished it up and the song ended. We were out of breath. We skated to the benches where Tim and Ryan were clapping. They had cheered us on the whole time with Cool's and Wow's.
"You guys rock!" said Ryan.
"Way better than me!" said Tim. We all skated a little longer, Tim was getting the hang of it, then we left.
"That was so much fun you guys." Said Helga.
"Ya, it was." Said Ryan. We went our separate ways, I took a cab home, and Ryan took the subway. When I got to my room, I watched some TV, checked my e-mail and ordered a pizza for Tessie and me. After we ate Pizza, I went up to the roof. Nobody was there. I looked over the ledge at the city. The sun had just gone down, it was beautiful. The lights were glowing, a warm breeze passed by. I took in a deep breath. I heard the door open and close. I looked over and saw that it was Heather.
"Have a nice day Sweetie, Goodbye!"
"No, mom wait!"
