Chapter 5

"See, not so bad is it?" he said looking at me.
"No, it's fine," I said loosening my grip on the pole. "I haven't been on a subway in years." We got off the Subway two blocks away from Freeman High. I looked at my watch when we were one block away.
6:42
Plenty of time.
When we were talking, I learned that he had moved here to be closer to his Aunt and Uncle that him, his little sister, and his parents visited every summer. (over the summers they stayed in their guest rooms.) He had gotten his job at 'Corner Bakery' two summers ago, and worked there when they visited there relatives. Now, he could keep a stable job. They now lived about five miles away from his relatives in a penthouse apartment. They could see them whenever they wanted. We got to the school, and walked inside.
"This is Freeman High." I said walking to the table where Tim, Helga, and I usually sit.
But, when I got there, I was surprised to see Helga sitting there with her bag on the table.
"What are you doing here?" I asked putting my book bag on the table and sitting down. Ryan did the same.
"Well, Tim said I should stay home, but I feel fine and he was asleep when I got up at six, so I just snuck out and took a taxi."
"He won't be happy knowing you're here and he's not." I said.
"Well, he can get over it," she said, smiling and turning her attention to Ryan. "Who's your friend?"
"Oh, Ryan this is Helga, she is my best friend, and Helga this is Ryan. He just moved here, and I met him this morning when I went into 'the corner bakery' on thirty forth street. He works there, I had never been in but Just Seattle was closed for some reason."
"Cool, Are you a junior?" she said shaking his hand.
"Ya, if you don't mind me asking, who's tim?" he said.
"Tim, is our other best friend, see, Sam and I have been best friends since sixth grade, and we met Tim in seventh grade when he was a new kid." Said Helga.
"Ya, and we are all best friends, and well Derik was our friend in eighth grade, but now he's a total jerk so it's just us now." I said.
"Right, total jerk," said helga taking a drink of her bottled water. "and now Tim and I are kind of together, since yesterday, and my mom just kicked me out, so I just moved in with Tim last night." Said Helga.
"We're in kind of a weird situation." I said.
"I see, so your going out with Tim, and your all friends, and you just moved in with Tim because your mom kicked you out."
"That's right." Said Helga.
"Why did your mom kick you out?" he asked.
"I'm pregnant, but I'm not a whore just to let you know, at least I don't think I am. Half the school does though." This was true. She had not had sex that much, and half of those times she was raped. It was so hard for her, and it was REALLY hard on her reputation, but she didn't care."
"Your pregnant?" he asked looking at her.
"Well, ya, I was raped by that shit head over there," she said pointing to Andy at another table. He still had a black eye and a few bruises. It was amusing. "And I'm not a coward who's going to have an abortion, so ya. But, I mean we just found out yesterday." She said.
"Wow, so you guys did a lot yesterday." He said.
"Ya, we did, didn't we?" I said.
"Ya, I mean I found out I was pregnant, moved in with Tim, started going out with Tim, and you and Tim totally gave it to andy." Said helga laughing and looking at Andy with his left arm in a splint. Ryan laughed. "Tim did that?" he asked.
"Ya he did, and Sam kneed Derik in the crouch." Said Helga giving me a playful punch in the arm.
"You did?" Ryan asked me.
"Ya, I did." I said. The bell rang.
"Happy Tuesday." Said Helga. Grabbing her book bag like me and Ryan. We all stood up. Just then Tim marched through the door with his book bag and a rather, well pissed off expression. He looked pretty good though. He was wearing a baseball cap, and a T-shirt and Jeans. When Helga stood up and I saw she was wearing a pink sweat shirt and jeans. Her blonde hair was put up in a pony tail. Ryan was wearing jeans and an orange button up shirt with the sleeves pushed up. We all looked pretty good.
"Helga Jane, what in god's name is wrong with you?" he asked coming up to us as we all started to walk to the hallways, we all had the same homeroom, even Ryan.
"I feel fine, god you wouldn't have let me come." She said.
"Whatever," he said now laughing. He wasn't really mad. "Who's this?" he asked putting his arm around Helga.
"That's Ryan, Sammy's lover that she met this morning at some bakery. He's new here for like three days. He's pretty cool. He is a junior too." Helga said.
"Excuse me, he is not my lover, I just met him." I said. Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.
"I've heard about you Tim," he said. "You're the guy that beat the crap out of that Andy kid."
"Ya, that was me." He said smiling and running his free hand through his hair in a 'I'm so cool' sort of fashion.
"Your full of yourself." Said Helga, looking up at him. Ryan found his locker and put his stuff inside. We all went to homeroom. Tim and Helga were getting to know Ryan before class started. When Andy walked in, Helga said "Oh my god Andy, what happened to you?" This got a few laughes, including me Ryan, and Tim.
"Shut up bitch." He said and sat down.
"Go to hell." She replied. Ryan just laughed.
Mr. Wright walked in as the bell rang. We all sat down at our desks.
"Ok, class I know there is only three more days of school after today, but never the less we have a new student. Ryan Mills." He said. Ryan made a small wave and looked around. Some people said Hi, or waved.
Ryan ended up having five classes with me, six with Helga, and all with Tim. We figured this out at lunch.
"I hope we all have classes together after the summer." Said Ryan.
"Ya, I don't think we get anymore homework this year." Said Helga, eating a lunch of carrot sticks, a turkey sandwich, and a bottle of water. She said she wanted to eat healthy from now on for the baby's sake. Tim and I were eating chips and pop. Ryan was eating chips, and a sandwich and some pomegranate juice that nobody else liked. (we all tried it and agreed it was horrible) Ryan thought we were weird for not loving it completely.
We ended the school day, (Helga was called a slut probably ten times during the day.) and Ryan went with us over to Tim's house. Tim's dad wasn't home still. We all thought Ryan was awesome. Tim was usually a hard person to read, but we could tell he approved of Ryan. Helga kept saying we were lovers. Which got on my nerves. We ordered pizza at Tim's and at about six, Ryan decided to leave.
"Ya, I should be going too, Tessie said I should be home by seven."
"Ok, see you guys tomorrow." Said Helga.
"Ya, nice meeting you Ryan." Said Tim.
"Bye." I said at the same time as Ryan. We both walked out the door.
"That was fun, they are awsome." Said Ryan as we started to walk to the corner.
"Ya they're great." I said.
"I'm going to take a taxi, do you want to share a ride with me?" he asked.
"Sure." I said. We got a taxi, and wouldn't you know it, it was Jane Sullivan."
"Oh, hey Jane." I said as we got in.
"You know her?" he asked me smiling.
"Hi Samantha, I went to college with her mom." She said.
"That's cool."
"Where do you live Ryan?" I asked.
"forty-fifth street down by national bank." He said. I stared in disbelief. National Bank was on my corner. I lived on forty-fifth street, of course it was a line of apartment complexes.
"No way, I live on that street!" I said smiling.
"Cool, what's your building?" he asked.
"Just go to forty-fifth street Jane," I said, as she nodded and started to drive. "My building is number 712." I said.
"Your kidding, that's my apartment! I live in that building on the penthouse!" He said.
"Oh my god that is so cool!" This was weird, we lived in the same apartment! He was the people that had just moved into the penthouse about a month ago. I remembered that.
"I remember some people moving in about a month ago, it was you!" I said. We talked on the way home.
"Who is Tessie?" he asked when we were about two minutes away from home.
"Oh, she is my Aunt. I live with her" I said. I prayed he wouldn't ask me about my parents. My dad had left me and my mom when I was four, and Tessie found out he had gotten in jail down in Texas two years after my mom died. Something with drugs.
"Oh, cool," he said. "Are your parents divorced or something?" he asked.
"Well, no," I said. "I just don't live with them."
"Oh, why not? If you don't mind me asking."
"Well, my dad is in Texas, in jail, and my mom is dead." I said.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry." He said his face turning into a sympathetic look, but not that annoying 'not really sorry' sort of way, in a really sorry way.
"It's ok," I said. "It happened when I was in sixth grade." We got to our street and Ryan paid Jane. We got out and walked into the apartment.
"Well, I'll see you tomorrow I guess." He said.
"Ya, I'll come into the bakery again tomorrow, with my wallet." I said laughing.
"Sounds good." He said grinning. He walked over to the elevator and when it opened he got in and managed to say "Mooo!" before the door shut. I laughed as I went into my apartment.
"Hey, who were you talking to?" asked Tessie as I walked in. I put my bags on the couch and hung up my jacket.
"Ryan Mills, he just moved into the penthouse up here and he is also a junior at F.H." I said.
"Oh, that's cool." She said. I went into my room, and for some reason I felt like I needed some fresh air. I told Tessie I was going up to the roof. I went up there and started to open the door, but I saw Ryan up there. The sun was going down, and I could still see a little. He wasn't alone.
He was talking to a girl. I could hear them, and they couldn't see me because the door was just cracked.
"Baby, it's nothing." He was saying.
"I just don't like you with other girls." The girl was saying.
"You know you're the girl for me, She is just a friend. She's really nice."
"Ok, but if anything happens we are over." She said.
"Babe, that will never happen." He said. I looked over at them. They were kissing.
I shut the door and walked back up to my room. I had no Idea he had a girlfriend. Not that it mattered. So why did I feel like I was somehow better than her? I hadn't even met her. It's not like I liked Ryan or anything, I mean he was cute, but I just met him.
Of course he would have a girlfriend. Why shouldn't he? I went back to the apartment, and Tessie asked why I was already back.
"There was a few people up there talking, and I didn't want to disturb them." I said. She nodded and I went to my room. Why was I so surprised that he has a girlfriend? I wondered as I got into my pajamas even though it was only 7:27.
And even more importantly, why did I care so much?
