Walking through the front door of the house she shared with her Uncle, Cadence let out a deep sigh as she left her hoodie on the rack in the hallway. She could see the work boots left haphazardly by the living room door frame and felt the pit start in her stomach. Rolling her eyes at whatever emotions her body was feeling, she knew better than to feel anything. She didn't feel nervous, upset, antsy or anything. It was business as usual.

"Where were you?" Her Uncle's voice rasped as he dropped the remote into his lap and looked up at her. He had already stripped out of his work jump suit and was now lounging about in his boxers and a stained up tank top.

"Out with a friend." She answered as she moved the papers from the couch and leaned back against it as she kicked off her shoes and moved them onto the ledge under the coffee table.

"Patricia's boy again?" He questioned as he muted the television and turned his attention to his niece.

"No, I haven't hung out with Patrick since before we left for the cabin." She ran her fingers over her stomach. She was trying to recreate the feelings Pete left on her skin. Anything to comfort herself against the thought of Patrick.

"Oh, so who was this that you were hanging out with?" He asked, as he was attempting to make small talk. He wanted to know where his niece had been.

"With one of Patrick's friends. We just caught a movie and then I walked him home." She shrugged her shoulders as she continued to run her fingers over her stomach.

Smiling, her uncle got on his feet as he turned off the TV. Taking her hand, he pulled her up as he breathed in the scent of her hair. "Come upstairs." He whispered as he dropped her hand and walked upstairs.

Cadence closed her eyes as she did what she was told and followed the familiar path up the stairs and behind her Uncle. She felt like she was walking the path to her execution. She practically was.

Standing in front of the stove, Cadence winced as the steam rose from the pot and cascaded along her neck. The stinging pain was still too much for her to handle. She just had to remind herself to keep her brave face on. She had to stay strong.

"Dinner almost ready?" Her Uncle's voice barked behind her and it took all she had not to jump out of her skin and knock the pot off of the stove.

"Just a few minutes." She said just loud enough for him to hear.

"You didn't burn it, did you?" He grouched as he sat down at the table and opened his napkin again.

"No, I didn't." She answered as she turned off the flame and drained the pasta. She then turned off the flame under the sauce and began to make him a plate.

"Spaghetti again?!" He groaned as he looked down at the plate. "What about a little variety, Cadence?! Or, are you to dumb to know what that means?" He looked up at her.

Cadence rung at the apron nervously as she tried her hardest to bit down on her tongue. "It's what you asked for last night." She couldn't help but tell him he was wrong.

"Oh, now you're going to get smart?!" He stood up as he grabbed the plate and threw it at the wall behind Cadence as it just missed her head. A few of the hot pieces of pasta flying and landing on her. "Now, clean this up and make me something else." He walked out of the kitchen.

Cadence let out a deep breath as she closed her eyes tightly and waited for him to leave the room. Once he was gone, she immediately started to pick up the pieces of the plate and food that had fallen on her almost completely clean kitchen floor. That had only lasted a few hours, if even that.

Finishing with everything she cleaned out the dishes and started on a new meal, she knew he wouldn't eat anyway. By that time he would complain that it was too late and he wasn't hungry anymore and she had made him lose his appetite. It was always her fault. It was even her fault that he didn't love her.

All sorts of thoughts entered her head as she began to cook once again. She missed Patrick more than she could ever imagine she would. Then again, she never thought she would lose him to some cheap hussy. She never thought that her best friend would just so easily forget about her, even if she was gone for a month. She had been miserable without him, why wasn't he miserable without her? Why didn't anything matter to him like it did to her?

The thoughts flowing through her head was enough to make her want to throw up, even more than anything else that day had made her want to. Even thinking about Pete made her confused. He had just left her and she wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean. Maybe she just hadn't pleased him the way she should have. She'd have to make it up to him next time.

She knew that if she could please him in all the right ways that she could make it so that he never wanted to leave her. He would want to spend all of his time with her and just be with her. Things would be perfect and they would be happy. She didn't have Patrick anymore, but she had Pete and they were going to be very happy together.
