Pete took a deep breathe as he knocked on the door. Leaning against the door frame he waited to hear the familiar bellow of his mother or father calling him into the office.

"Come in!" He could hear his mother call as he reached for the knob and turned it to let himself into his parents joint office.

"Hi, Mom." He smiled as he saw her sitting there at her desk a pile of papers in front of her. "Could I steal a minute of your time?" He could feel the butterflies ballet dancing inside of his stomach and he was just trying to not let the words spill out.

"You my boy can have many minutes of my time." She smiled as she dropped the pen and focused on her son. He always came before anything else she ever had to do.

"Uhm, you know that girl I've been hanging around with a lot?" He started off just to make sure she knew who he was talking about.

"Yes, that beautiful young lady with the stunning blue eyes. We've met, yes." She smiled. "Are you thinking about asking her out?" She knew her son well and she never thought he'd be coming to her about a possible relationship. Usually he was pretty smooth with handling the ladies. He got that from his father.

"Actually, we've been dating for a while...but...she kind of told me some things that aren't really good, Mom. She needs help and I need to get her help." He sighed as his eyes fell to the ground.

He wasn't embarrassed about what she confided in him or the whole situation, but he was embarrassed for her. He knew if she had any idea what he was doing that she would be mortified but she had fallen asleep about a half an hour ago so he took the time to talk to his mother.

"Bad things?" She repeated, but as a question. She wasn't sure where he was going with this. "Is she okay? What kind of bad things, Peter? She's not pregnant is she, baby?" Her first thought was the fact that perhaps her son hadn't been so careful with himself.

"No, no. She's not pregnant, Mom. While you guys were on vacation, Cadence had come over and well we had a bit of a fight and she went to run from me and I grabbed her and I found all of these marks all over her, so I asked her what they were from and she told me that her Uncle hits her. She's only seventeen, Mom, she still lives with him. He's her guardian. And, I thought I could protect her..." The words almost oozed out of his mouth as he tried to continue making sense.

"Oh, baby..." She took her son's hand. "I will do anything you need me to do to help her. I know you care about her." She told him.

"I'm not finished, Mom."

"Go on, baby, there's more?" She questioned.

"The other day, I was talking to Patrick, they're best friends and he's not happy that we're dating, but he told me that her Uncle rapes her and that they've tried to go to the police before but he has a lot of friends in the department and they just let go of the charges or the report!" He was outraged when he actually said those words outloud.

"What?!" Her voice was raising. She was angry now. You do not do that to a child and you do not let someone get away with it! "Well, then we'll simply have to call child services and we have to get her out of that house. You tell her she will be staying here with us!" She stood up as she began to look around.

"Really? She can stay here?" His mother was always very strict on the girl rule, even if he was twenty two. He still lived at home and he had to follow the rules of the house. You know the old saying "As long as you live under my house, you'll live under my rules." Only it wasn't that bad. Pete didn't mind so much. He broke himself out of those thoughts.

"Of course, and I will be calling Child Services." She said as she took out her book. Being a teacher and working in a school she had every number she needed on hand.

"Thank you so much, Mom." He smiled as he threw his arms around her. "I really care about her and I don't ant him to hurt her ever again." He whispered into his mother's ear.

She had a smile on her face as she nodded. "I can tell, baby. He won't ever hurt her again, I promise, I will make sure of it." She said as she sat down at her desk again and picked up the phone.

"Mom, they won't take her away will they?" He asked. "Like put her in a foster home or anything?" He didn't want to lose her.

"Well, she'll need some place to stay during the investigation, but, she can probably stay here. I'll work it out, baby. First things first is her safety. Now, I know she's upstairs right?" She laughed as he nodded. "Just make sure she knows what's going on and tell her she can stay here and then see if there's a time where we can go and get her some stuff from her house or we can just get her some new things." She told him as she was pretty much just talking and answering her self.

Pete nodded. "I'll go talk to her, thank you, Mom." He kissed her cheek as he got up from the chair and walked out of the office. It felt like there was a weight lifted off of his shoulders and now he could make sure Cadence felt better.

Smiling to himself, he ran up the stairs to his room just hoping that Cadence would wake up sometime soon. She had a rough night so he wanted her to get some sleep, but he was also excited to tell her that she never had to leave him.

The thoughts of how fast this relationship had moved never even crossed his mind. He was just thinking about he had finally found someone so perfectly imperfect. Someone just as hurt, if not more, as he had been. He was pretty sure that he was in love or close to being in love with this blue eyed beauty.
