The swing creaked under Addie’s weight. She kicked the snow under her feet all the way to the sandbox, at least what she thought was the sandbox, there was so much snow everywhere. But Addie didn’t mind or care, she leant back in the swing as much as she could. The swing spun slowly around and Addie saw the large, brick building in which she had spent her whole life in. A single scream and the pounding of feet running up the stairs let Addie know that someone was visiting the building. She closed her eyes and let the snow nip gently at her face. Then, without even realizing it, Addie ended up on the ground, still dazed by the endless bounty above her.

“Are you okay?” Addie snapped her head to her left. There was a girl that looked to be about her age, she was short, though, had her shoulder length blonde hair done up in a ponytail with her bangs loose. Her clothes were defiantly in better condition than Addie’s, yet still a little worn out. Bright, gray eyes with a drop of blue in them looked down at Addie, who was still unmoving. The girl repeated herself a little louder while take half a step towards Addie.

“Yeah, I guess,” Addie replied groggily, as if she had woken from a good night’s rest. The girl advanced towards Addie and offered her a hand. “Thanks.”

Addie swatted the snow off of her, then watched as at it fell to the ground with the rest of the snow. She looked back up and saw the girl tilting her head at her, boring into her head with those piercing eyes, as if she were trying were trying to figure Addie out just by the looks of her.

“What?” Addie asked, now looking the girl over as well.

“Uh,” the girl seemed to be caught off guard, as if she were being completely discreet. “I‘m Mora Labbe,” she said as she stuck her hand out again.

“Uhh, hi, Mora,” Addie took the hand once more and gave it a quick shake.

“So,” Mora said coolly.

“Yeah, so,” Addie repeated faintly as she looked back up at the sky.

A moment passed before Mora began again, “What are you doing out here, it‘s freezing?!”

Addie looked Mora in the eye and said, “Yeah, that‘s kinda why it‘s snowing.” Then sat back on the swing, tilting back just as she had before.

“So,” Mora said once again. “You like the snow, that‘s cool. I like the snow too, it‘s nice but really cold, I take it you like the cold, but I don‘t know how, it‘s just horrible for me. I like to go swimming, basically the opposite of snow but just because we like opposite things doesn‘t mean we can‘t be friends. I have a lot of friends but I don‘t really like them too much, they think I like them but I really don‘t, because my dad tells me to be nice to them because they‘re his friends‘ kids but sometimes I can‘t help it and-”

Addie snapped back up in her seat and faced Mora with a vicious groan, “Look, Mora, I don‘t really get what your point is talking to me. Around here that‘s kind of what the adults are supposed to do. But seeing how I already know that you‘re not gonna leave me alone until you never every detail about me let‘s get this over with!!” Addie took a deep breath and let the words flow out of her mouth, “My name‘s Addie , I turned thirteen 2 weeks ago, my ears have been pierced three times each even though I only like to put on to two earrings per lobe a time, I don‘t like lasagna because I think it sounds weird, my favorite band’s the Misfits, when I was 7 I had a pet rock named Joe, I hate people, my favorite color is pitch black, and if I were stuck on a desert island I would bring with me food, water, and boat! Now, GO AWAY!!!”

Mora smiled then snatched Addie’s hand before she could turn away from her. She attempted to haul Addie in, as if it were as simple as that. But Addie just didn’t work like that, she spun around in the swing so that it would be impossible for Mora to do anything.

“But Addie, this is really important, you have no idea!” Mora started pulling her bangs and jumping up and down, kind of like how a cartoon character. “Just come on,” Mora tugged on Addie’s hand again. “You‘ve gotta trust me on this one, you‘ll never forget it, ever!!”

Addie flailed her arm around aimlessly while asking, “Why the hell should I trust you? Listen, Mora I‘ve met a lot of people like you and let me tell ya, every last one of them annoyed the living shit out of me! I honestly don‘t think I could live with you for the rest of my life!”

“No, no, no!!” Mora had placed her hands on her head and started shaking it vigorously. “You don‘t understand! Me and everyone else that’s in there aren’t looking for a kid to adopt!”

“Then, why the hell are you here?!?!” Addie was now unpinning herself, as much as she hated herself for it, she was actually intrigued by Mora.

Mora spun herself around wildly, as if she were being possessed or something, “I can‘t tell you! Just come inside with me and you‘ll see in like ten minutes, okay?”

Addie was now unraveled and was supporting herself on the chains of the swing, “But, why? Why can‘t you tell me anything? Why do I have to go inside?”

“I wish I could tell you, I seriously wish I could, but Jerry and Val made me promise not to tell you anything until THEY saw you first, so come on I‘m about to burst!”

This time, Mora grabbed both of Addie’s hands and managed to get her through the back door of the brick building. Addie got one hand free and made one last futile attempt at getting away. She grabbed the wooden sign with the words Happy Children Adoption Services engraved across it, but her fingers slipped and Addie was forced into the house.
