Casey swallowed hard as she quickly averted her eyes from his own, having a hard time looking at him at the moment. She winced slightly when he lightly brushed his fingers over the bruise. “Pete...”

“Casey, who did this to you?” He asked as he gently lifted her head, making her look at him.

The concern in his eyes and the frown marring his mouth made her lip tremble as she buried her face in his chest, whimpering softly as tears quickly built up and were shed into his chest, wetting his shirt. When his arms slid protectively around her she began crying harder, her own arms wrapping around his waist as she clung to him, needing more and more to know he was there.

Pete frowned as he slowly and softly rubbed his girlfriend’s upper back, his chin resting softly on the top of her head as she cried into his chest. So confused by what had just happened, all he could do was hold her and rub her back. “Come on baby, let’s go sit on the couch,” he whispered before he kissed the top of her head. He watched her as she slowly pulled away nodding as she wiped the tears from her eyes. Following her to the couch, he sat down and gently pulled her down into his lap, holding her close.

Casey let out a soft sob as she put her face against his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” she cried softly, “I didn’t– I didn’t mean to just start crying like this.”

Pete held her close, rubbing her side. “It’s okay baby, obviously something bothered you,” he whispered, kissing the side of her head as he brought up his hand from her side to softly stroke the back of her head. “When you’re able to, I want you to tell me what happened baby girl. Okay?” When she sniffled and nodded with a soft whimper, he kissed the side of her head again and continued to stroke her head.

As she finally calmed down, Pete turned his head to look into her tear-stained face when she lifted her head to look at him. He gave her a small smile and used the hand that had been stroking her head to softly brush away her tears. “You okay now hon?”

Casey nodded only slightly. “I’m sorry Pete... I didn’t think you would see it... I tried to hide it...”

“But why baby? Why were you hiding that? Who grabbed your arm hard enough to leave their hand behind?”

Casey sat up and slid off of his lap, looking at her hands when she was sitting normal on the couch. “It happened when I was visiting my grandmother... I didn’t want to tell you about it because I didn’t want you getting mad at anyone or... Or leaving me because of what kind of stuff goes on in my life that until you now you didn’t know anything of...”

“Casey... What’s going on?”

“Pete, the reason I moved to Illinois from Florida is because I had to get as far away from my family as possible... I used to say that I would stay until my grandmother passed on, but things... Things just got to be too bad between my mom and I... Ever since I was a kid my mom hit me and she didn’t stop at any point when I was growing up until I turned 18... When I turned 18 it stopped being physical, but the mental and emotional abuse was still there until I was 21... We got into our first physical fight in years and it was shortly after that, that I realized...” Casey frowned, her lip trembling slightly since all of this was hard for her to go back to. She sighed and wiped away the tears that were threatening to start falling again. “I realized that things would never be okay between us and that it would only get worse... I moved here...”

“Why would your mother do that?”

“I don’t know... I always tried so hard to be a good daughter, to do as she told me to, but she was never meant to be a mom... Anyone can tell you that. She did so many bad things, said so many terrible things, made me want to die even.”

“I’m glad you didn’t die,” he said with a small smile, and she knew what he meant by it, which made a small smile form on her mouth.

“When I was there, while gram was still in the hospital, we got into it... I tried walking away and she grabbed me.”

“That hard?” He asked as he lifted her shirt sleeve and frowned at the discolored skin. He leaned down and make a kiss sound before lightly blowing. “I’m sorry baby,” he said as he lowered the sleeve and looked up into her eyes. “You know, you shouldn’t be afraid of telling me things...”

“Pete, the more you know, the more you might not want to stick around,” she said as she looked away from him.

“Hey, look at me,” he said, frowning slightly as she did so. “Casey, I’m not going to break up with you just because of things going on in your life, or things that did... That would be pretty dumb of me to do considering everything in my life that I’ve gone through.”

Casey frowned, forgetting her own pain as she began to wonder what her boyfriend could have gone through to give his eyes the old look that settled as he had finished his sentence. She reached up, cupping his cheek, looking at him with concern as she leaned up and brushed her lips across his forehead.

“Case?”

“I’m sorry for what you might have gone through Pete,” she whispered and sat up on her knees on the couch, hugging him to her. She sniffled one last time before he wrapped his arms around her, touched by her concern for him over her own pain.

“How about we forget dinner and go lay together for a little while?” He asked, looking at her. “Until we’re feeling better? Then pig out on Chinese?” Casey gave a small smile as she nodded and kissed his forehead again, getting up from the couch with him. He put the food in the fridge as she went on ahead to the room. When he got in after her, she was sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for him, giving him the small smile that he had grown fond of, which made him smile in return.

Casey got up when he came into her room, smiling at the smile she herself wore, and met him before he could reach her bed, kissing him softly. Sliding her arms around his neck, she closed her eyes and deepened the kiss slightly; she shivered when she heard him moan against her mouth.

Pete wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close as he returned the kiss that was steadily getting deeper. He hadn’t planned this and he knew she hadn’t either, but he also knew that they both needed the closeness of one another, even if it didn’t end up leading up to sex.
