“So, how is she doing? Is she doing okay? How is everything?”
Andrew chuckled softly into his cell phone. “It’s good to hear from you too Peter,” he said as he ran his fingers through his hair while sitting on the couch of his parent’s home. “She’s doing okay and all, obviously missing you by he way she was acting when I was talking about you.”
Pete found himself smiling as he rode in the back of the limo with his friends “So she misses me? How’s Jasper doing?”
“He’s doing good. How’s the whole getting a new cell thing going?”
“I’m trying to find one I like before I buy anything. Joe’s being nice enough to let me call you from his phone.”
“Tell the guys I said hey. She got a raise at work, which by the way, speaking of work, you weren’t kidding about her not letting you spend your money on her.”
Pete chuckled and looked out the window. “I told you so...”
“I did manage o buy her a drink though...”
“You did?”
“But then when I dropped her off and was headed home, I went into my center console to get out my sunglasses.... I found a ten that wasn’t there to begin with.”
Pete laughed at the trick his girlfriend had pulled on his brother. “Oh wow, that’s great. She’s creative, isn’t she?”
“Yeah,” Andrew chuckled, looking at his mom with a small wave when she came inside with his father. “She really is something... She told me she left her phone out in my car and when she went out, well, I’m guessing she put the money in there then... I should have known better, but she pulled the ‘incase someone needs me’ card and I couldn’t just tell her no.”
“Who are you talking to dear?” Their mother asked as she came up behind him.
“I’m talking to Peter mom,” Andrew answered, yelping when the phone was jerked from his hand.
“Peter Lewis Kingston Wentz the third, why haven’t you been returning my calls young man?”
Pete cringed and shrunk down into the seat of the limo. “Um... I was stupid and dropped my phone into a toilet when I leaned down to lift the seat up...”
“And how long ago has that been?”
“Um... about a week?”
“Why haven’t you replaced it?”
Pete sighed when he heard Andrew laughing his ass off in the background. “I haven’t really found a phone I liked enough to buy.”
“Peter quit being so damned picky young man. I bet this means you haven’t even gotten in touch with that nice girl of yours, doesn’t it?”
Pete frowned, sinking down further, and buried himself in his hooded sweatshirt. “Mom, I’ll be getting a new one later on today, if I get a break.”
“Why don’t you use Joseph’s cell phone to call her, like you’re calling us?”
“I um... I... don’thavehernumbermemorized.”
“What did you say young man?”
He could practically see her busying about the kitchen, putting stuff away as she talked to him, pausing in her movements at this very moment to put her hand on her hip, glaring at the place in front of her as if he himself were standing here. And he was glad he wasn’t.
“I don’t have her number memorized Mom,” he said slowly and began to pull the phone away from his ear, waiting for the onslaught of yelling. He waited, furrowing his brows when he heard nothing. No talking, no yelling... Nothing... He pulled the phone back to his ear. “Mom?”
“Why don’t you have her number memorized Peter!?”
Pete yelped and ducked his had, glaring daggers at Joe who started laughing when he obviously heard his mother’s shrieking on the other side of the limo. “Um, because I always have it on my cellphone?”
“And how did you intend on getting back in touch with her when you get a new cellphone?”
Crap.. I didn’t think of that, he thought, chewing on his lip as he looked at his fingernails, finding them really dirty and in need of a cleaning. “Um... I was thinking of having Andrew go get it for me?” He could see her shaking her head at him. “Peter...”
Pete looked at the phone as it went dead, showing ‘Disconnect’ flashing across the screen. “She hung up on me,” he said, is voice and face showing his total disbelief.
