Casey closed her eyes, enjoying the soft piano playing through the speakers of her stereo, adding onto the calming effect of the soft patter of the rain. She slowly stroked Jasper’s stomach as he laid stretched out against her side on her bed. Yawning softly, Casey looked up at her ceiling, staring at the patterns the rain was making as the street lights shone in her window, casting the shadows of the water drops onto her ceiling. She had a pumpkin spice candle burning, adding more peace to her already perfect night scene. Tonight was definitely a relaxation session that was well earned. It was keeping her mind off of the fact that Pete still had yet to call her, but she knew he was busy; she understood it all.
She needed this night off from work, even said no to Dolly when she had called, needing her to come fill in. Although she did need the money, she needed her night off more; it was her first night off since Pete left. She kept taking the extra days to keep her mind on her work, and off of Pete, but now it was wearing her down.
She heard the vibration of her phone as it shook on her bedside table, looking over at it. She sighed and grabbed it, her mood broken, and looked at the Caller ID, an unknown number flashing on the screen. She flipped it open and pressed the accept button. “Hello?”
“Hey beautiful,” spoke a very familiar voice that brought a wide smile to Casey’s face. “How’s my baby girl doing?”
“She’s missing you, terribly,” she said with a small giggle as she rubbed Jasper’s side. “How did you get my number? I thought you didn’t have it written down anywhere?”
Pete chuckled softly into the phone, making Casey’s heart beat ten times faster. “I bribed your manager with an offer she couldn’t refuse,” he answered, and she could hear the smile in his voice.
“I’m not even going to ask how you have my work number but not my cell number Mr. Wentz,” she teasingly chided, listening to him laugh into the line.
“Remember when Patrick stopped by your work, when his girl was sick?”
“Yeah...?”
“Well, he got a business card and he kept it with him incase he ever wanted to order a book.”
Casey chuckled. “Remind me to tell his girlfriend to kiss him for me when you guys get back,” she said, giggling as he chuckled. “So, how is California anyway?”
“Sunny, hot... Sometimes sunny and windy, still hot,” he chuckled, loving the sound of the laugh he pulled from her. “But all the time boring. I kind of wish you were out here with me.”
“I wish I was too, but you know my work schedule...”
“Just as hectic as mine, only not for the same reasons.”
“We live to work,” they both said at the same time, sharing a laugh together. Gods had she missed this, laughing with him, having him next to her would top it all, but she knew she would have to wait for it. On his side of the line Pete was laid out on the couch in the living room of the hotel suite they had gotten for the time out in California, not wanting to disturb Patrick, who was trying to sleep in the room him and Patrick were sharing. Andy and Joe were in their room, playing video games to pass their time. As soon as he had figured out the damn new phone he had called her job and bribed her boss.
“I can’t wait to come home,” he said when their laughter had finally died down. “I miss it.”
“Aw, you don’t miss me?” She asked in a teasing tone.
“Nah, not really,” he chuckled, “I miss your cat more than I miss you.”
Casey gasped before laughing. “How... Rude!”
Pete laughed softly, amused by her reaction, and definitely enjoying the knowledge that he was making his girlfriend laugh. “Oh come on now hon, you know I’m only kidding with you.”
“You know what? I’m not so sure about that... I should hang up on you right now Peter,” she said as her laughter finally died for her.
“Oh come on baby, don’t hang up on me,” he begged through his own laughter, “I promise I’ll behave.”
“You sure you can Pete?”
“Yeah, I can. I promise.”
Casey giggled. “Okay, I’ll take your word for it.”
“Casey, would you come out to Cali with me if I talked your manager into giving you paid time off?”
With how fast he had blurted the question out, she was curious if he hadn’t already done so and was just checking to see if she would, even though he already got the okay for her to do it. “Um, Pete...”
“Please?”
“Pete, did you do what I think you did?”
“If you want to come see me, I can have you on a plane in as soon as five hours.”
“This is kind of sudden Pete, and how much would this cost you? Pete hon, I can’t leave on such short notice,” she frowned slightly, looking at Jasper as he hopped up on her stomach and cocked his head at her. “I’d love to Pete, but what am I going to do with Jasper?”
“Mom already said she would watch him if you said yes...”
“Pete... You know I don’t like you spending your money on me.”
“Casey, I miss you. I miss you so much I could have kissed Patrick when he told me he still had that business card. Please Casey... Come out to see me. Please. I need to see you again. I can’t wait another month. Please.”
