“What the hell is going on with Gerard?” Alicia asked me a few days later. We were both backstage while the guys were busy with their sound check.
I looked at her, “What?”
She laughed, “Man, the guy has changed. He’s so fucking happy it’s kinda scary. Marriage must agree with him.”
I smiled. Ever since getting back he had been much better. I had called his mother several times to in hopes of finding out what she had learned from Helen. Unfortunately she had not gone to visit her as planned, something had come up. Gerard had been relieved when he had heard. As happy as I was that he seemed to be dealing I knew part of this was still an act. Donna was planning on visiting Helen today so I would giver her a call tomorrow. She and I had formed a good relationship so the fact that I was calling didn’t seem unusual. She was happy when I would call and tell her about both of her sons. I never made it seem I was calling just to ask about Helen. That part I would sneak into the conversations.
“You zoned out.” Alicia complained bring me back to the conversation.
“Sorry, just thinking about what you said. Marriage agrees with both of us. I’ve never been happier in my life.”
Alicia nodded, “Gotta admit at first I was worried about you hooking up with my bro-in-law but hey, it’s all good now. So you two have any plans for after the show?”
“We haven’t talked about it. I know the bus is gonna pull out around 3:00 am. Not much time to go anywhere. What are you and Mikey gonna do?”
Alicia shrugged, “Dunno, I just wanna do something. I’m already sick of the fucking bus.”
I laughed, “Ah, free-spirit that you are, you just can’t be caged.”
“Funny” she said leaning over and smacking my arm. “Hey, maybe you and I can go do something. You’re done for the day. I know the Meet & Greet was a success.”
I laughed, “Yeah, once I got the girls away from Gerard and moving along it was good.”
“Does it bother you when young girls swarm him?”
“Nope.”
Her eyes narrowed, “Come on. Tell the truth.”
I looked her in the eye, “Really it doesn’t. I understand how much they care about him. Besides I’m okay with it cause I know at the end of the day he belongs to me.”
Alicia laughed, “Yeah, that’s how I feel about Mikey too.” She looked around before speaking again, “So what’s the deal with Christa?”
“What do you mean?”
Alicia sat back and through a moment, “Well for one thing she never leaves Ray’s side until she absolutely has to. For another she avoids your husband like the plague.”
My mind went back to the last conversation I’d had with Christa when she’d asked me if I was afraid of Gerard. I had not had a chance to talk alone with her again. I wanted to know why Ray hadn’t told her about the suicide note. He had to know that made Gerard look bad. Was Christa really thinking that my husband had stabbed Merri?
“Hello, zoned out again. What’s with you today?” Alicia asked looking at me closely.
“Sorry, I was just thinking about your question. Ray and Christa are in love. Guess that’s why she doesn’t want to leave his side.”
“So what’s up with her and Gerard?”
Fuck, how the hell could I answer this one? “I haven’t noticed her acting strangely towards Gerard.”
Alicia snorted, “Well watch her. You’ll see it.”
Gerard and Mikey walked up to us ending the conversation. Gerard put his arms around me and nuzzled my neck. “How about we go for a drive after the show?”
I melted into him, “Sounds good. You got a car?”
“I’ll get one.” He whispered into my ear. “Tomorrow when we get to the next venue I think we should get a hotel room. The next day is an off day so we can meet back up with the rest of the band the following day.”
The heat off his body was making mine respond. “Sounds wonderful,” I whispered back. He looked up to see his bother and Alicia involved in their own discussion. “Exit To Eden” his hot breath purred into my ear.
Oh hell, I knew the movie. How did I know that leather whip would make an appearance?
The guys were getting ready to hit the stage when I saw my chance to corner Ray alone. Alicia and Christa had already taken their seats on the side stage.
“Ray, why didn’t you tell Christa about the note.” I asked him coming right to the point.
He looked up from his guitar he had been messing with, confusion on his face, “What note?”
“The suicide note Merri left.” I hissed.
The look on his face changed, “I didn’t want to add anymore lies to the fucking mess. Laura, there was no note. Merri didn’t leave a suicide note.”
I felt the world tilt. “But Gerard told me she left a note. He said you read it to him.” I whispered. I noticed that Frank was signaling to Ray. It was time for them to go on. Ray looked at me sadly. “I picked up a piece of paper off the bedside table when I saw Gerard was about to completely lose it. I told him Merri had left the note saying that she loved him but wasn’t a whole person. He believed me, he needed to believe me.” With that he walked off leaving me totally confused and fuck it, afraid. Not for myself but for Gerard.
