“So, Casey, how’s work been?” Mrs. Wentz asked before taking a bite of food from her plate.
Casey looked up at nodded, smiling. “It’s going good. We finally have a new girl that might actually be good. She shows potential, and she doesn’t ask questions that pretty much say she doesn’t agree with the way it’s done. More like she’s making sure she gets what I’m saying.”
“So I take it you train the new people?” Peter asked before continuing to chew on the food he had in his mouth.
Casey nodded. “Dolly has me do it,” she said with a small shrug. “I guess she thinks I do it right.”
“Well you could run the store if she asked you to,” Pete said with a small smile as he gave her a sideways glance from his spot next to her.
Casey blushed slightly and shook her head. “No I couldn’t. Quit blowing smoke,” she said with a sideways smile at him. “Unfortunately, as soon as we get her trained, poor Sara, or Smiggy, as she likes to be called, will be filling in for me for about a week or so.”
Mrs. Wentz raised her brows in slight surprise. “Oh? Do you mind if I ask why?”
“Well, I have to take another, dreaded, flight back home to visit my grandmother,” Casey said, smiling a little when she felt Pete’s hand give her leg a comforting squeeze; she knew it was because he knew what was down there. “She’s having another operation soon and I would really prefer to be with her when it happens.”
“What if you don’t get this girl trained before you have to go?” Peter asked, looking at his plate as he debated which portion to eat from next.
“Then Dolly will finish it up for me... But hopefully at that point Sara will only have to be shooed along and reminded here and there.”
“Is the operation life threatening?” Mrs. Wentz asked.
Casey shook her head. “No, but I prefer to be there incase something should go wrong. I’d rather be there, then have to find out something happened while in another state.”
“Too bad Pete can’t get some time out of the studio, or he could go with you,” Peter said, looking at his son with a look that Pete read loud and clear. “It would be a shame for you to have to sit worried on your own.”
“I’ve sat through plenty without him,” she smiled, looking at Peter. “I can go one more. And besides, I would hate to have time pushed back from the album on my behalf.” Casey put her hand down under the table and slid it under Pete’s hand, locking fingers with him. “I know how tight of a schedule these guys are on, and that we’re lucky to be able to have a dinner with Pete tonight, so I know it would be a big push back on the album, which is almost done anyway.”
“And I’m only a call away if she needs to hear my voice,” Pete said as they each squeezed the other’s hands and smiled at each other.

Pete smiled as he held a sleeping Casey in his arms. He had another case of insomnia, but tonight he was happy about it because it gave him time to watch her sleep. Normally they passed out together, or he woke up without her, or she woke up before him, so he was enjoying this time of getting to watch her in her dream land. He wasn’t happy that she was going back to Florida, back to her mother, but he understood and knew how she felt. If his Mother was going through a surgery of any kind he would want to be there for her. And her Grandmother might as well have been her Mother.
He brushed his fingers through her hair and kissed the top of her head. He heard a faint vibration and looked on her bedside stand to see her phone shaking. He grabbed it and saw the name “Grammy” flashing. “Casey, wake up, phone,” he said softly.
Casey opened her eyes and looked at him as she took her cell. She opened it and looked at it before answering. “Hello?”
He rubbed her back softly as she covered her mouth to hide a yawn. She gave him a small smile that he returned and kissed her forehead.
“Yeah, I’m doing okay Grammy,” she said before she stifled another yawn. “No I’m not at work, I’m at home.” She turned over and put her back to Pete before curling back against him. She smiled when his arm wrapped around her waist and his other snaked under her head so she could use it as a pillow. She chuckled. “You’re not bothering me Grammy, what did you need?”
Pete nuzzled her shoulder as he laid there, patiently waiting. When he felt a sudden weight on his hip, he looked over and saw Jasper standing on his side. He shook his head with a smile when Jasper stretched out on him. He nuzzled her shoulder again and placed a soft kiss there. He listened as she talked with the older woman on the phone, not really paying attention to the conversation, just listening to her voice as she talked. He loved how her voice wasn’t so high and bubbly he couldn’t stand to hear her. He couldn’t remember the last time he had someone like Casey.
Casey smiled slightly as she gave his hand a small squeeze when he kissed her shoulder again. She was glad he was there for her, even when nothing was wrong.
When Casey finally hung up, he kissed her neck softly. “I’m sorry I had to wake you hon,” he said as she turned over in his arms and smiled up at him. “But I knew you wouldn’t want to miss a call from her.”
“Thank you for waking me up,” she said as she snuggled into his chest. “She wanted to tell me the actual date for the surgery.”
“Don’t thank me, it was no big thing,” he smiled.
“Pete?”
“Yes Casey?”
“I love you baby,” she said with a smile before she leaned up kissing him softly.
