Casey frowned slightly as she laid in bed, looking up at the shadows playing on the ceiling of the small room. Across the room, on another bed, her grandmother lay sleeping; her black cat curled up beside her. Since she didn’t have Jasper, or Pete, with her, Casey was finding it hard to get to sleep. She knew was a little after two in the morning, but she couldn’t sleep. Jasper’s purring was absent and the cat in the room was dead asleep so she was useless. Casey turned over and looked at the wall.

She remembered staring at this very wall for hours on end, tears streaking down her face as her grandmother comforted her and rubbed her back. How many years did they share this room before she got her own room? How many year had her torture gone on? It was all pretty much a blur anymore; but she knew it was real. It was the reason Pete could hardly even touch her face, it was the reason she had trouble trusting those close to her, even if they never hurt her. How did she live through it all?

Casey sighed softly as she realized she had barely lived through it all; she was possibly scarred for life and now it had come between he and her love life. She might have lost Pete because of it. I can’t touch you... She frowned as his words echoed in her thoughts.

“You’re thinking too much again...”

Casey smiled slightly as she looked over her shoulder at her grandmother who was sitting on the edge of her bed. “My turning didn’t wake you, did it, Gram?”

“No.” The lamp clicked on, illuminating the small room. “You should know by now I almost never sleep Casey. So, what has your mind going this time?”

Casey sighed and sat up on the edge of her bed, running her fingers through her hair since she had it down. “First off, you really should sleep sometime Gram, second, just some troubles from back in Chicago. They’ve got me thinking. And of course I’m thinking about your surgery next week.”

“I told you not to worry about that Casey,” the old woman said with a sigh as she stood up and went to the door. “I’m getting a drink, do you want anything?”

“No, I’m good,” Casey said as she stood up. “Let me get your drink for you.”

“Get some rest,” her grandmother said before she left the room.

Casey sat on her bed and sighed, tilting her head slightly when she heard a faint vibrating. She looked on the floor by the bed, where she had laid her phone so it wouldn’t vibrate on the bedside table and wake her grandmother, and saw her phone’s light flashing. She leaned down and grabbed it, feeling her chest tighten and her heart pound in her rib cage when she saw Pete’s name on the screen. As she was about to answer the phone, it stopped and an alert popped up on the screen saying she had a missed call.

She stared at the phone, debating whether or not to call him back, wondering what he could have to say to her. When her phone vibrated and the alert popped up for a voice mail, she bit her lip and pressed call, listening to her voice mail tell her she had a new message.

“/Casey,/” Pete’s voice came on the line and she could hear something in it that made her keep listening, “/I really need to talk to you. Please, please call me. They told me you left early because of what I said. I... Dammit Casey.../” Casey closed her eyes when she /Please Casey, call me, talk to me. I can’t lose you baby./” Her chest clenched painfully when she heard him sniffle and she could picture his eyes filling with tears. “/Please.../”

Casey hung up after deleting his message and swallowed hard, closing her eyes tightly to press back her own tears. She was so confused as to what to do because she knew he was up, obviously, but she knew she would lose it herself if she heard him crying. But if I don’t call him back he might think I want to end it, she thought as he thumb hovered over his speed dial button. He doesn’t know I’m awake though... I need to know...

She looked up when her grandmother came in. “Gram, will you be okay if I take a call real quick?” When she was answered by a nod, she left the room and walked down the hall. She pressed the button as she pulled on her hoodie and went outside, listening to the phone line ring.

“C-Casey?” Pete’s breaking voice questioned as he answered his cell.

“Hey,” she said softly, frowning when she heard the hope and regret in his voice. “I...I got your message.”

“Casey, I’m so sorry for what I said and did. I swear I am baby, please, please don’t leave me. I need you too much to lose you over my stupidity. I wouldn’t blame you if you left me but please don’t. I need you...” His words trailed off and his voice cracked at the end of his words and what she heard made her heart break even more. His soft sobs filled her ear as she leaned against the door that led back inside. She could picture him holding the phone to his ear, his other hand pressed to his forehead or his temple as he cried.

“Pete, you seriously hurt me with your actions and words,” she whispered, wishing she could pull him into her arms and make him stop crying. All she wanted was to hold him close and brush her fingers through his hair. “I never thought you would hurt me like that... I didn’t think you could...”

“I never meant to hurt you Casey,” he said softly. “I wouldn’t even deserve your forgiveness if you chose to give it to me.”

Casey looked down, burying her free hand in her hoodie. “I’m still too hurt and upset to give you a straight answer Pete... Can I think about it and call you tomorrow?”

“Call me anytime you decide Casey,” he said softly. “Don’t rush it, just call me when it’s good for you, okay?”

“Alright... Thank you Pete, for understanding.” She bit her lip as she looked up at the sky.

“No Casey... Thank you for even considering giving me a second try...”

When they hung up with each other, Casey frowned and brushed her hair from her face, wiping her eyes before she walked inside to see her grandmother sitting on the couch by the door. “So, you want to tell me who Pete is?”
