Pete swallowed hard as he hung up his phone, watching the screen fade to black as he shut it. He knew he had fucked up big time and Andy had laid it all out for him. After Andy told him everything he had punched Andy, and accept the punch in the jaw from Andy. He only wanted Andy to hit him again and it worked; so well he thought his jaw was broken for the first half hour afterwards. He looked down at his new puppy, Hemingway, who was sound asleep on his floor, despite the dog bed he had. He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair as he got up from his bed and wiped his eyes as he pulled his hoodie tighter around him.

He walked out of his room and headed downstairs and through the living room, making his way out to the porch. He wasn’t very surprised to see snow starting to litter the ground when he shut the door behind himself. He had just sat down on the step when the door opened behind him. Looking over his shoulder, he gave his mom a small smile. “Hey Mom.”

“Are you having trouble with insomnia again Peter?” She asked as she leaned down and kissed the top of his head.

He sighed and nodded. “That... And I have a lot on my mind,” he said and looked out at the snow falling in the yard. “It’s part of the insomnia...” When his mom sat next to him and wrapped her arm behind his back, rubbing up and down his spine, Pete frowned and looked up at her, tears welling up in his eyes. “I think I lost her Mom.”

She frowned and hugged her son, letting him put his face in her shoulder as she rubbed the back of his head. She rocked him softly as he pressed into her, obviously needing her comfort. “Peter... With Casey, she’s obviously the kind of girl, that if you lost her you wouldn’t think you did... You would know you did.” When Pete sniffled again and gave a shaking sigh, she frowned and raked her fingers through his hair. “Whatever happened, just give her a couple of days and then try talking to her again.”

Pete groaned as he opened his eyes and looked up at the ceiling, his head pounding as he curled up under his blankets. He hadn’t slept at all last night, only tossed and turned, and now the damn sun was up when he was finally getting tired so sleep was out of the question now. He looked down at his legs where Hemingway had made himself a bed and sighed. “Glad one of us can sleep,” he said with a small pout.

He laid his head back down and sighed softly again, looking over at the picture of him and Casey sitting together that Andy took without her knowing. He frowned as he looked at the picture, remembering that movie night at Pat’s house. The same night she had gotten a raise from Dolly and was very happy about it. It was around their sixth month and here he had fucked up the chances of making it to a year, or longer, with the first person he had actually loved in a long time.

When the bed shifted and the warmth left his legs, Pete smiled slightly when Hemingway made himself home on his chest and started licking his chin.

“Sleep long enough?” When Hemingway gently bit his chin, Pete cringed and rubbed the back of his head. “Got it, don’t tease the puppy.” He sighed softly as he softly stroked Hemingway’s back his eyes taking up a staring contest with his ceiling. There was something wrong beneath all of this, something that was eating away at him, and he couldn’t figure it out. He desperately searched his mind for anything that he could be subconsciously thinking about, but he came up with nothing, and when his head started pounding more, he gave up and put his mind on ways to make things right with Casey.

As he walked in the door of the book store, an evil glare made his blood run cold as he froze in his spot under Dolly’s fierce gaze. “You have a lota fuckin’ nerve comin’ ‘round here,” she growled out, her New York accent thicker while her blood boiled. “The fuck are you ‘ere for? Y’know she went back home already.”

Pete ducked his head after nodding slightly. “Yeah I know, but I really need to talk to you about her.”

Dolly’s eyes narrowed. “What the fuck have you got to say that won’t make me knock your teeth down your throat?” She demanded.

“Hey, is this the guy that Casey was crying over?”

Pete looked next to Dolly at the girl that popped up at her side. The girl had pissed off brown eyes and a scowl as scary as Dolly’s. Pete swallowed hard when he caught sight of the flex of the jaw in Dolly’s muscle as she nodded and the girl reached for her pocket. He took a step back. “L-Look I really, really, really need to talk to you about her. P-Please?”

Dolly lifted a brow at him as the girl, whose name tag read Sara, took a switchblade from her pocket and fiddled with it, not opening it, but pretty much let it be known she was ready to use it. “What have you got to say?”

“And make it good,” Sara growled out.

Pete swallowed hard and began to speak to the two, trying to keep his eyes on Sara’s knife or in contact with Dolly’s eyes as he told them what he wanted.
