Casey smiled slightly as she signed for the flowers that were for her grandmother. Mr. Adams always sent her flowers whenever Casey visited as his own little way to say he was thinking about the both of them. It touched her to know someone could care this much about a woman he only knew through the words of her granddaughter. She handed the man his clip board and took the flowers, walking inside. “Gram, something came for you!” She called out to the woman who was watching television in her room.
“What is it?” Irene called out as Casey walked down the hall to her room. She looked at Casey when she came in and a smile lit her face when she saw the roses. “Did Mr. Adams send those?” She asked.
Casey nodded and set them on the dresser by her Grandmother’s bed. “Do you need anything?”
“Can you get me the phone and my address book?” Irene asked as she reached up and touched the soft petals of the rose. “I want to call him and thank him.”
“Would you like me to dial the number for you so you won’t have to search for it?” Casey smiled as she crossed the room to get the phone that was in there incase her grandmother couldn’t make it to the living room where the other phone was.
“If it’s not too much to ask?”
Casey smiled at her grandmother as she dialed the number. “You know you can’t ask too much of me Gam,” Casey said with a smile as she listened to make sure the phone line was ringing before she handed the phone to her grandmother. “Do you need anything while I leave you to the call?” When Irene shook her head she smiled and left the room to get herself a drink.
When she got out to the kitchen and started pouring herself some mango tea, her phone starting ringing in her pocket and she recognized it as Dolly’s ring tone. She quickly finished pouring the tea and took her phone from the pocket of her pants, flipping it open. “Hey Dolly, how’s the store?”
“The store is still standing,” Dolly answered and Casey caught the odd tone in her voice. “You don’t need to be worrying about the store though, how’s the old woman?”
“She’s doing okay,” Casey paused to take a drink of her tea. “She just got some flowers from the older gentleman from my apartment building. Is everything okay up there?”
“I told you things are fine,” Dolly insisted and mumbled something, obviously to a worker since it was a task command. “I’m holding things just fine. The important thing is that you’re fine Casey. You know I worry about you anytime you go back down there to that shit hole.”
“Yes I know, I know,” she paused to take another drink. “But I’m doing fine. Mom hasn’t done anything so far, but you never know with her... Besides,” she looked at her tea, frowning as her mind drifted to Pete. “I’m needed here right now. As soon as everything is finished here, I’ll be back in Chicago.”
“I hope so Kiddo, I fuckin’ miss ya already.”
“I miss you too Dolly,” Casey said with a small smile. “But I promise I’ll check back in later. I have to go check on Gram, okay?”
“Alright Casey, I love you Kiddo, take care.”
Casey sighed as she hung up the phone and slid it back in her pocket, taking a longer sip of her drink before she headed down the hall, smiling when she heard her grandmother talking with Mr. Adams. She stood in the doorway and smiled at her grandmother when she waved at her.

Casey pulled her grandmother’s car into the driveway and frowned when she saw an unfamiliar car in the driveway. It was later that evening and Irene had asked her to go out and get dinner for her, Casey, and Casey’s mother Mary, and when she had left he car hadn’t been there, but now it was and she had never seen it before so she was a little bit confused. She parked the car in it’s spot and got out of it. Shutting the gate, she grabbed the food from the car, since shutting the gate with it in her hands would have been near impossible and headed to the porch.
Once at the top of the stairs on the porch, she froze, her eyes going wide when she saw who opened the door for her.
