Casey sniffled as she curled up in a ball on her bed, the same bed she would never look at the same again; not after what had just happened. She sniffled softly as more tears rolled down her cheeks. Jeffrey turned concerned eyes to the nine-year-old and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached back and lightly rubbed his hand over her arm.

“It’s okay Casey baby, the pain will go away soon, I promise,” he said in a soothing tone as the little girl looked up at him with hurt, tear-filled eyes. “I’m sorry it hurt this time, but I promise the next time it won’t.” He leaned back and kissed the top of her head.

Casey turned her face into her pillow crying softly as Jeffrey got up and left the room. It wasn’t just the pain of his invasion that made her cry, he’d tried to be as gentle as he could, but the confusion of why it had happened, and the fear that now her mother would hate her for what he had done. But her mother loved her enough not to blame her for this, didn’t she?

“Why did you make him feel bad afterwards!?” Mary yelled at Casey, making the girl flinch and take on a confused look. “You heard me, don’t play stupid! You’re going to chase him away if you make him feel bad!”

Casey shook her head, confused as to why her mother was mad at her, and not Jeffrey for what he had done. “B-But mommy-”

“Next time don’t you dare fight him, do you hear me!? He’ll leave me if you make him upset. Do you want me to hurt? Is that what you want? I give you everything and now you won’t give back for all that you’ve taken? What a selfish fucking brat.”

“Why aren’t you mad at him for hurting me?” Casey asked in a small voice as tears began filling her eyes.

“Sometimes it has to hurt.”

“But don’t you love me?”

“I love you Casey, but apparently you don’t love me.”

“It’s your fault he left!” Mary screamed at fourteen-year-old Casey, who sobbed as she was struck again and tried to back away from her enraged mother, only to find herself backed into a corner. Another stupid thing she had done, why couldn’t she just do something right?

“I’m sorry!” Casey cried out in her defense, yelping when her mother struck her across the face once more. “I did everything I could,” she sobbed as she slid to the floor. Her knees going to her chest.

“I did everything for you and this is how you repay me!? I loved him and he loved me. You made him leave you fucking brat! Why couldn’t you just do the one thing I asked of you? Just to fucking deal with it!? And now he’s gone,” Mary’s voice broke as he eyes began to tear up; but not for Casey.

“But I dd try,” she cried as she looked up at her mother, who was now crying for her loss. “I never fought him after you told me not to. I did everything he asked so you could be happy. It’s not my fault he left!”

Mary snapped her head in Casey’s direction, her eyes narrowing as the tears left them, to be replaced with more anger. “What did you say?” She demanded as she began shaking with anger. “Did you just say it isn’t your fault that he left?” When Casey gave a timid nod, Mary reached down and grabbed her arm, pulling her to her feet; a bruise would later form. “Well it sure as Hell wasn’t my fault Casey. Look at me and look at YOU!” She back-handed her daughter, knocking her into the wall. “Who the fuck could ever love a disgusting girl like you?”

Casey stared at her mother with wide eyes as Mary laughed at her own statement. “You’re fat, ugly, no one will ever love you Casey. He left because you quit turning him on. It’s all your fault.”

Casey sobbed as she slid down the wall, muttering apology after apology, but it all fell on deaf ears as Mary watched the sad sight, finding it pathetic and pointless in her mind.

Pete opened his eyes when he heard soft muttering amongst soft crying. He looked at Casey to see tears rolling down her face, which was twisted with pain and sadness. He wrapped his arm around her waist, rubbing her back softly as his other hand, went to work, softly running his fingers through her hair. He glanced up at the sleeping Irene in the other bed, grateful that she was still asleep. The older woman had refused to let him sleep on the couch after catching a Red Eye from Illinois to Florida to see Casey, and she trusted them to share a bed, and he was glad she did; Casey needed him there.

He held her loosely, so not to frighten her in her sleep; his memories of the last nightmare were still fresh on his face even though it happened months ago. He whispered soothing words as she slowly quieted down and began to not shake as hard. He smiled slightly when she no longer shook, but his smile couldn’t be whole until those tears stopped rolling down her face. He kissed her forehead and continued to rub her back and play with her hair.

In her sleep, Casey whimpered softly, some part of her subconscious recognizing the hands as Pete’s, and not Jeffrey. She relaxed into the soft ministrations, her nightmares slowly fading away as she began to emotionally calm down. When the arm around her body tightened slightly, she let it pull her closer, slowly opening her eyes to look up at Pete, who had his eyes closed as he kept rubbing, unaware that she was awake now.

“Pete,” she whispered.

Pete opened his eyes and looked down at her as tears began filling her eyes yet again. “It’s okay baby, I told you, I’m here for you, no matter what,” he kept his voice hushed as he spoke to her, his eyes showing the care and concern he felt for her.

“Thank you, so much,” she whispered before putting her head to his chest, listening to the steady heart beat within. This sound had always been so comforting for her when the nightmares hit. Being back in this place had made them return in full force and she didn’t know what she would have done if she woke up without Pete after that one.

“Don’t thank me baby,” he said before kissing the top of her head. “I’m here because I love you.”

“I love you too Pete,” Casey whispered as she looked up at him. “I’m so glad you came here...”

Pete smiled and brought his hand up, slowly so as not to rehash what her nightmares already had, and softly cupped her cheek, brushing his thumb over her cheek to wipe away her tears. “Hey, how about we take a drive, get out of this house for a little bit?”

Casey sniffled and nodded slightly. “I have a place we can go, where no one will bother us.”
