Chapter 25: Headaches
Patrick was trying to write some music to Pete’s lyrics, but nothing was coming. “How are you doing with that song?” “Huh, oh. Not too good.” All of a sudden Patrick was filled with a sense of dread. He could taste the bile in the back of his throat. He ran to the bathroom and threw up everything in his stomach. He washed his mouth out and came out of the bathroom. “Dude, are you alright?” “I don’t know. Something is wrong. I’m going to call Bobbie.”
Patrick got his phone out and dialed her number and dialed Bobbie’s number. “Come on, Baby.” “You’ve reached Bobbie. Leave a message.” “Hey Babe. I am worried about you. Please call me . I’m coming home now. I need to be with you and Eric. If you get this before I get home, call me. I love you.” “Did you get a hold of her?” “No, I’m going to go home. I need to see her and Eric.” “Okay. See you tomorrow.” “Yeah. Bye.” Patrick ran to his car and drove home.
He noticed Bobbie’s car wasn’t in the driveway or any lights on. He unlocked the door. “Bobbie, Eric? Are you guys here?” There was no answer. He checked the answering machine. There were no messages. He decided to call Megan. “Hey, Megan. Have you heard from Bobbie tonight?” “No. Are you alright? You sound upset.” “I just feel that something happened and I can’t find her.” “I’m sure she is fine.” “You’re probably right. Thanks.”
After he hung up there was a knock on the door. It was a police officer. “Can I help you?” “Are you Patrick Stump?” “Yes.” “Your wife and son were in a car accident. They are at the hospital.” He didn’t even correct the officer. “Oh god. Are they alright?” “I don’t know.” “Okay, thank you.” Patrick grabbed his keys and got to the hospital. He ran to the nurses station. No one was there. He was getting upset by the minute. “Can someone help me?” he yelled. Just then a nurse came out. “There’s no need to yell, sir. How may I help you?” “I’m here for Bobbie Madison and Eric Roy.” “Oh, Eric is in recovery and Bobbie is still in surgery. I’ll get a doctor to talk to you.” He couldn’t take this anymore. “Bobbie, please be alright.”
“Patrick Stump?” He turned around. “Yes, how is she?” “Not real good. She is in surgery.” “What happened?” “A car hit her car head on. She has internal bleeding and swelling on her brain. She didn’t break anything which I’m surprised.” “When will she be out of surgery?” “In a hour or two. You can see your son.” “How is Eric?” “He’s doing good. He broke his arm. We’d like to keep him overnight.” “Okay. Will you let me know when Bobbie gets out of surgery?” “Sure.”
Patrick went to Eric’s room. He was starring into space. “Hey Bud.” “Daddy.” Eric started crying. Patrick went to him. “Everything will be alright.” “Where’s mommy?” “She is getting better. How are you?” “My arm hurts. The accident was really scary. I put in your CD and next thing I know we are flipped upside down. Mommy wasn’t moving.” “I’m sorry Eric. I’m here and everything is going to be fine. You need your rest. Why don’t you go to sleep.” “I love you.” “I love you too.” He kissed Eric and sat in the chair. He couldn’t lose the family he just got.
A hour later the doctor came in. “Patrick, your wife is out of surgery.” “Um, she’s not my wife. She’s my fiancé.” “Alright. Can we talk in the hallway?” “Sure.” They walked to the hallway. “How is she?” “She is very touch and go right now. We almost lost her a few times. The next 48 hours are crucial.” "Okay. Can I see her?” “Just for a few minutes. She is in recovery right now. Follow me.”
Once they got to the recovery department Patrick took a deep breath. Bobbie looked awful. He went to her. “Hey Babe. Trick is here. Everything is going to be alright.” There were wires and tubes everywhere and machines with beeps going off. “Oh god. Bobbie please be alright. If not for me, for Eric. He needs you. I do too. I love you. I should have been there today. I am so sorry. None of this would of happened.” He pushed the hair from her forehead. “Mr. Stump, you’ll have to leave.” A nurse came in. “Okay.” He looked down at Bobbie. “Baby, I have to go. Next time I come here I want you yelling at me for missing the appointment today. I love you.” He kissed her cheek.
He walked to a phone and called Pete. “Hello?” “Pete, something has happened to Bobbie and Eric. They were in a car accident.” “Oh fuck no.” “Eric has a broken arm, but other than that is fine. Bobbie is in really bad shape.” “Patrick, I’m so sorry. Do you want me to come to the hospital?” “I’m fine for now. I just visited Bobbie. There are so many wires. They don’t know if she is going to make it.” He started to cry. “Patty, she’s going to make it.” “I don’t know. Pete, she looked terrible. I can’t lose her again. We just got back together.” “I’m coming down. Go see Eric. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Patrick hung up the phone.
“Mr. Stump?” “Yeah.” “I’m Officer Mitchell. I’m working on the case of your wife and son..” “Actually Bobbie is my fiancé and Eric is her foster son. We are in the process of adopting him.” “Okay. I don’t know how much you know.” “I just know a care hit them head on.” “The driver in the other car was drunk.” “What? What happened to the driver?” “He is in custody. He has no injuries.” “This can’t be happening.” “I’m sorry. This isn’t his first offense. He’ll probably go to jail for a few months.” “A few months. My fiancé is laying in a hospital bed and I don’t know if she’ll wake up. We were suppose to get married in 2 weeks.” “I understand. I really do. A drunk driver killed my parents. I will keep you updated. If you need anything at all don’t hesitate to give me a call.” After the officer let Pete walked though the hospital doors. “Patrick, how are things?” “I just found out it was a drunk driver that hit them.” “Damn, I’m sorry.” “He might only get a few months in jail if any time at all.” “I’m sorry.” “He might be the killer of my future wife and just spend a few months in jail. The wedding is off now.” “You need to calm down. She is going to make it. The wedding is just postponed for awhile. We have to believe she’s going to get better."
Patrick and Pete talked for awhile and then Patrick went to Eric’s room while Pete went home. He was still sleeping. Patrick looked down at the sleeping boy. “Eric, I promise things will be fine. Your mom is going to get better." Patrick went to the chair to rest.
A few hours later he work up. “Hi daddy.” “Hey, how are you feeling?” “Okay. Is mommy okay?” “She is still sleeping. She needs her rest to get better. It’s going to take some time.” “Oh.” Eric got tears in his eyes. Patrick held him. “Shhh. It’s going to be okay.” The doctor came in. “Hi Eric. How are you feeling today?” “Alright. My arm still hurts.” “It’ll hurt for awhile. You’ll be able to go home today.” “Good.” “I’m going to talk to you dad in the hallway for a bit.” Patrick and Dr. Aarons went to the hallway. “How is she?” “She is stable. Still hasn’t woken up yet. We moved her to ICU. You’ll be able to visit her there now and stay overnight if you would like to.” “Okay. When can Eric leave?” “I have some papers to sign and you need to sign them also. And then he’ll be able to go home.” “Thank you.”
Patrick went to see Bobbie. “Bobbie sweetie. How are you doing?” He looked down at her. “You sure know how to scare a man. I need you to wake up. Maybe this will. Pete and Megan are taking Eric in for awhile.” He watched her. It looked like her eyes were twitching. “I knew that would get you. Now you need to wake up. I’ll be back later. Eric is leaving today. He wants you to get better. He loves you. Please get better. I love you.” He kissed her.
He walked back to Eric’s room. “Hey Buddy.” “Hi daddy. Did you see mommy?” “Yeah, just for a little bit. She’s doing better. Still sleeping.” “Oh. Can I see her?” “I don’t know. She looks pretty bad.” “Please. I won’t cry. I want to see her.” “I don’t mind if you cry. If you want to you can cry. When you get discharged we can see mommy. I want to talk to you about something. I’m going to be here for awhile helping mommy. You’re going to stay at Uncle Pete’s.” “No. I want to stay with you.” Eric was crying. “Eric, this isn’t permanent. I need to be there for your mom. You need to go to school.” “What if she won’t get any better?” “She will. She has made both our lives better and we can’t think like that.” “Okay.”
Pete came to the hospital. “Hi, Patrick.” “Hi.” “How are you?” “I’m alright. I just want to wake up from this nightmare.” “Eric, here’s some clothes. Why don’t you change.” “Thank you, Pete.” “Patrick, are you really alright?” “No, I feel as my life is falling apart. I don’t know what to do.” “I think you need to go home and take a shower and go to bed. In fact I want you to.” “No. Bobbie needs me.” “She doesn’t need you to get sick. When she wakes up she’ll need you by her side. Not looking like a zombie. Right now you look like you should be in one of these beds.” “Pete..” “Stop. Go home.” Patrick was defeated. He was so tired. “Okay. Call me if you need anything with Eric.” “I will, but we’ll be fine.” Eric came out of the bathroom and the doctor came with the papers for Patrick to sign.
They walked to Bobbie’s room. Eric went to her side and Patrick was behind him. “Mommy, you need to get better. Daddy’s really sad. I’m going to stay with Pete and Megan. I wanted to see you before we left. I’ll come back again. I love you.” “Eric, are you alright?” “Yeah. Take care of her, daddy.” “I will. You go with Pete.” “I love you.” “I love you too. He looked at Pete. “Please take good care of him.” “I will. You take care of yourself.”
After Pete and Eric left Patrick turned around. “Hey Baby. I want to see your beautiful brown eyes. You need to open them. Do you remember when we first went away. We just knew each other for a short time. What were we thinking. I could have been some kind of nut. But I’m so glad you went. I knew then I want to spend my life with you.” He took her hand. It was bruised and bandaged. He kissed it. “I’m going to go home and take a shower. Pete basically said I look like shit. I’ll be back later. When I get back I want you awake and ready to give me hell. I love you.” He kissed her.
Patrick left and went home. It was so lonely there. He took a shower and shaved. He put on some boxers and climbed into bed. He could smell Bobbie. Everything reminded him of her. After a hour of tossing and turning he fell asleep. Early evening the phone rang. “Hello?” “Patrick, this is Dr. Aarons.” “What’s wrong?” Patrick sat up in bed. “Bobbie’s blood pressure went down. There is also pressure on her brain. We need to remove a small part of her brain. She is being rushed into surgery right now.” “Oh god. I’ll be there in a little bit.” “Okay. I’ll speak to you then.” Patrick hung up the phone. For ten minutes he just sat at the edge of the bed crying. “Bobbie, I love you.”
~Patrick’s Flashback~
~Bobbie collapsed on Patrick. “Oh my god, Trick.” “Amazing.” “Exactly. I love you so much.” “I love you, more.” She smiled at him. “I want things to stay like this forever.” “What? Me struggling in a band and at a dead end job and you to stay in college?” “Well, not exactly the same. But between you and me. I want us to have a family and to love each other every day and every minute.” “We will. I promise. No one will tear us apart.” “Patrick, you mean so much to me. I will never be able to show you how much.” She kissed him. “Same here.” He rolled her over and he kissed her.~
