Prologue

Kaiya pulled her long wavy black hair back into a loose braid before she began to pour the jasmine tea. As she had done so many times before, she dropped a sugar cube into one of the porcelain cups - just the way Lady Ursa liked it.

Kaiya had been in her employ as a maidservant for nearly four years, and she hoped for many more. Lady Ursa had been, by far, the kindest person she had ever worked for.

Kaiya had bonded with her instantly when she had first taken the position even though Lady Ursa was twelve years older than she. For they had one thing in common – because of the war, neither had a family left. Over the past four years, the two women had become very close friends.

Still, Kaiya knew that there was something about Lady Ursa that she preferred to keep to herself.

She quickly counted up the number of cups. Eight. She had enough tea for each White Lotus member in the next room. Kaiya put the cups onto a wooden tray and took it into the secretive meeting.

”It is way too dangerous, Ursa. You are a key member in the Order. I cannot allow you to return to the Royal Palace.” Piandao pounded his fist on the large round Pai Sho table as he said this.

“I know the palace and I know my ex-husband. That means I am the only one who can do this. My plan will work.”, Ursa pled her case back to the group of men.

“He will have you killed the moment you step inside the palace. No. We have to send someone else.”, Iroh spoke up.

“Who then? There is no woman I trust well enough to send in my place. No woman I know who is capable of...”

Just then, Kaiya came through the door carrying the tea tray. The room fell extraordinarily silent. All eyes in the room turned to stare at her as she began to gracefully place the teacups in front of each person at the table. She started to become extremely self-conscience as she noticed that the men studied her body as if she were a piece of artwork on display for the very first time.

Kaiya had no idea what kind of club the Order of the White Lotus was, but she was pretty sure it had nothing to do with Pai Sho

The last person she served was Lady Ursa, who looked at her with compassion in her eyes.

"Kaiya, it’s time that you find out the truth about me. And I need to ask you to do something very, very important."
