Pete scratched behind Bear’s ear as he stared at his phone that rested on the coffee table in front of him. He hated the fact that he had to wait for the phone call that his future in law was okay after her surgery. Even more than that he hated that he couldn’t be at the hospital with Casey while she was more than likely pacing the floor of the hospital. His leg started bouncing as he eyed the clock and then the phone once more, wondering why it was taking so long; and if everything was okay.

He looked up at the door when it opened, and frowned when he saw it was Mary and Jeffrey coming home from their lunch together. How a daughter could go out and have fun, while her mother was having a potentially life threatening surgery, disgusted him. “Hello Mary, hello Jeffrey,” he said with a small nod.

Mary looked over at him and then glanced around the room. “I take it mom is still at the hospital?” She asked as she turned her gaze back to Pete.

Pete nodded. “Yeah, I’m waiting for-”

“Thank God, I wasn’t in the mood to help her out right now,” Mary said with an obnoxious laugh before she sat down on the loveseat across from the couch that Pete was sitting on. “I’m sure you know what I mean.”

“Actually Mary, if my mom just underwent surgery that would leave her weak and unable to help herself I would be worried that she would be okay through the whole recovery time,” Pete replied, his brows drawing together as his gaze slightly darkened. “Especially if I owed my mom for all of her help, I would try to make it up to her by helping her with anything she needed while she recovered.”

Mary scoffed and then laughed quietly as Jeffrey leaned on the couch Pete was on. “Well I don’t owe my mom anything, so I don’t have to help her. But, while we’re on the subject of people owing each other...” Mary’s voice trailed as she eyed Pete with a hint of interest. “Since you’re going to be marrying my daughter, you can pay me for everything she owes me. After all, you have the money to do it.”

Pete tensed up as he fought against his anger that started bubbling up due to the path Mary seemed to be on. “You know Mary, I don’t believe Casey owes you anything. After all, you were never there for her, which to me says she doesn’t owe you anything.”

Mary went rigid as she locked eyes with Pete, both glaring at each other. “She doesn’t owe me? That little fucking cunt owes me for everything she’s ever had. I’M the one that put a roof over her head, I’M the one that put the clothes on her fucking back, I’M the one who made sure she had everything she every wanted or needed. I don’t know what the fuck Casey told you, but it’s pretty fucked that she would lie to her own fiance.”

“Everything you supposedly did for her is everything that Irene did for her while you were too busy going out with different men every other night. The only time you were there for your daughter, your own flesh and blood, was when you were hitting her for not being the perfect little girl. You beat the fucking shit out of her when that sick fuck,” Pete pointed his arm at Jeffrey as he spoke, “got tired of raping the same child every fucking night and left!”

“HEY!” Jeffrey’s voice boomed through the living room, making Mary jerk slightly as she looked up in surprise at her boyfriend. Pete raised his glaring eyes to the man that had hurt the love of his life. “You need to get your story straight Pete. I never raped Casey,” Jeffrey said as he locked his gaze with Pete’s. “It was never rape with her, she loved my attention. She loved me. I left because I knew our love for each other was wrong.”

“It was wrong because she didn’t love you!” Pete exclaimed. “It was wrong because you were raping a child!”

“If it was rape she would have fought me,” Jeffrey stated, a smug smile spreading his lips.

Pete could almost feel the last thread of his restraint snap as he got up from his spot and slammed his fist into Jeffrey’s stomach, making him double over in pain. As Jeffrey was coming up, Pete swung again, his fist connecting with Jeffrey’s jaw, a loud crack sounding through the room as Mary gasped and put her hands to her mouth.

When Jeffrey swung at Pete, Pete grabbed Jeffrey’s wrist and twisted his arm behind his back, shoving him into the wall, not caring that another crack filled the room, more than likely belonging to Jeffrey’s nose since his face had hit the wall first.

“I’m only going to tell you this one time Jeffrey,” Pete said, his voice smooth and collected, despite the murderous hint underneath. “If you lay one finger on my future wife, I’ll break your fucking neck. I have the kind of money to make sure a sick fuck like you is never found. Do you understand me?” When Jeffrey weakly nodded, Pete shoved off of him and went to the table, picking up his phone. He looked at Mary, who stared at him with wide, frightened eyes. “There are worst things for a person like you,” he said to her as he headed to the door, sending one last glare at Jeffrey before he left the house.

Casey sighed as she paced the waiting room, every minute dragging by, every second driving her insane as she waited for news on her grandmother. She didn’t know what she would do if she lost Irene right now. She ran her fingers through her hair and paused to watch the news for a second, trying to get her mind off of it, but she really didn’t care to hear about another Florida hurricane.

When a hand gently touched her shoulder, Casey turned and immediately wrapped her arms around Pete, hugging him close as he rubbed her back. “I’m not even going to ask what you’re doing here,” she muttered into his chest, inhaling his calming smell.

“I needed to be here with you,” he whispered as he kissed the top of her head. “I want to be here when she gets out, just as much as you do baby.”

Casey pulled back and looked up at him. “Thank you Pete,” she said with a small smile as she went back into his arms, feeling a lot better than she had a few minutes ago.
