Ch. 2
Hello Nurse Hilary and Flowers and Brothers
Benji woke to the sound of people. He hurt all over. He tried to move his arms and he could, they weren’t tied down. He opened his eyes at the bright light and a baby blue room. His first thought was, “Heaven?” Then he saw a T.V. hanging by the
ceiling, he looked to the side to plants and gifts on the windowsill. He blinked then looked at the cords and everything hooked to his arms. He sat up lowly and looked at the little remote with the nurse picture
on it. He grabbed it and pushed the button his muscles aching. He pushed it again like he didn’t know what he was doing, like he didn’t know what he was pushing. Soon a tall woman walked in, she had a white nurse dress on and a hat, she was blonde and she had brown eyes. She smiled sweetly, but there was something wrong. She was not but his age. He lied back and cringed to the pain in his arms. He opened his mouth but before he could answer she spoke
“You’re in the hospital and you were brought here cause you were found in your bath tub in your house bleeding. It was bad.” She said and walked up, “Are you ok Benji?” She asked
Benji blinked noticing he knows this girl, “Hi.. Hil… Hilary?” He said choking a little on his spit
She blinked, “Good, for a sec there I thought you had amnesia.” She started checking the machines
Benji looked at her and sighed
She blinked again looking at him, “Are you wondering what happened?” She asked, “Well this is
what your mom thinks, you mom thinks you tried to comment suicide. Your brother Joel on the other hand, man in school he says your father did it. Though I have to agree with him, cause your father hasn’t been seen anywhere for police to question him.” She went back to the machines
Benji nodded closing his eyes, “I remember…” He sighed again, “You didn’t need to tell me…”
She looked at him and put her hand on her hip, “What did he do to you Benji?” She asked
Benji shuttered and sighed once more, “My father… He’s sick and demented.” Tears shown in his eyes
Hilary turned toward him, “Benji... What did your father do to you?” She sat on his bed
Benji turned away from her, “Nothing Hilary. Go away please.” He said and closed his eyes
Hilary stood up and nodded, “Ok.” She walked out. When she shut the door Joel walked up. She looked at him, “Can you try to figure out what’s wrong with your brother. It was your father who did it. But he
wont tell me.”
Joel shook his head, “I’m not gonna pressure my bro.” He walked into the room holding a bunch of flowers. He walked up to Benji trying to hold his tears.
Benji looked at him and he blinked slowly, Joel looked different.Older? Benji sat up, “Joel, are you taller or what?” He asked
Tears went to Joel’s eyes, hedropped the flowers on the bed, “You are finally awake Benji, I prayed so much.” He started crying
Benji put his arms around Joel, “What are you talking about Joel? You make it sound like I was dead.” He said forcing himself to laugh making it a little bit of a joke
Joel started sobbing harder. He then sat up and sat down by him and held him against him, “Benji, you’ve been asleep for five years. You and I are
sixteen now.”
Benji fell silent, it was as if his breathing stopped as well. He looked at him, “Fi… Fi… Five years!” All of a sudden that stuck Benji hard like a baseball bat and he started crying so hard he had to take deep breaths in the process of crying.
Joel sat there with him rocking him back and forth slowly and rubbing his back to help him. He looked at Benji, “Not to make it worse but the doctors thought you wouldn’t have made it cause they couldn’t figure out why you stayed asleep so long. You were in a coma yeah we knew that, but they think it was from all the blood, but they really don’t see how that happened. They said you should’ve been ok by a few weeks, not years.” He said, “It scared me so bad.”
Benji nodded rocking with him, “I…I’m so sorry…I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” He kept sobbing hugging Joel tightly. He started thinking, “This is why Hilary looked different and I didn’t know who she was at first.” Benji cringed again
Joel looked at Benji, “But they did after awhile figure out that Dad bashed your head against the side of
the tub cause sense there was so much blood anyway they couldn’t see the blood from the spot you hit. But soon they found bloodstains Dad tried to erase on the side of the tub. And your head was dented in, in the front. They think that is another possibility, the biggest one yet.” He held Benji tighter, “Oh Benji, why didn’t you tell us he beat you?”
Benji’s lip trembled as he tried to talk, “I…” He covered his mouth his lips still trembling, “I… I was… I was scared for you…” He finally got out and he burst out crying, “He said I was his play thing Joel! Daddy doesn’t love me!”
Joel started crying harder when Benji did, “Oh Benj… You are not a play thing, you are what you want to
be.” Joel looked up and looked at Benji, “Hey guess what.” He said trying to sound cheerful
Benji looked at him, “What?” He said
“Billy, remember Billy Martin, he is here. He is here to see you.” He smiled at him
Benji looked at the door, “Billy? He is… Billy Martin…”
Joel nodded, “Sarah… Sarah and Josh were here right before Hilary walked in.” He smiled
Benji nodded putting the tips of his fingers to his lips, “Can Billy come in now? But you stay here… I’m scared to be alone now…” He said looking around
Joel nodded and he grabbed the nurse alarm and pushed the button, soon Hilary came in, “Yeah guys?”
Joel smiled, “Can you do us a favor Hilary?” He asked
“Well I’m a nurse and that’s what I do ain’t it?” She asked smiling
Joel laughed and blinked when Benji started laughing lightly. He then looked at Hilary again, “Can you go get Billy from the waiting room please?”
Hilary crossed her arms, “Do you deserve it?” She smiled
Benji smiled, “You better or I will come over there and you don’t want to know what I can do to you in that lil skirt of yours!” He said
Joel laughed. Hilary shook her head, “I shouldn’t for that, but sense you are my patent I will, be right back guys.” She waved and walked out of the room smiling
Benji smiled at Joel, “I’ve always had my way with girls.”
Joel nodded, “Yeah your way of scaring them off.” He laughed when Benji hit him
The door opened and Benji couldn’t believe the change in what he saw.
