Crime Doesn’t Pay

Months passed. Benji was getting better. He was glad.

March 11th, Benji’s last day in the hospital. Benji opened his eyes and smiled looking at the window thinking, “Last day. I will be glad to go to school again. Well for like two months! But still I don’t think I will have to catch up.” He laughed to himself and looked at the door as it opened

“Benji?” Hilary walked in. She smiled, “You’re awake I see. Well you know what day it is!” She walked up

Benji nodded, “Yes I do! My last day!” He laughed

Hilary smiled and nodded, “But first we are gonna go through a little talk before you leave ok?” She asked sitting down beside him

Benji leaned forward watching her, “Sure.” He said resting his head on his hands

Hilary took a deep breath, “Ok. As your nurse I need to go through some things.” She rested her
hands on her legs looking at him, “First make sure you don’t hit your head to hard. So when you go back to school and you want to go out for a sport, no football k?” She laughed

Benji smiled, “Aw bummer. I wanted to get the life pounded out of me for no reason!” He laughed

Hilary smiled and looked down at her hands playing with her fingers, “Ok and also…” She looked at him, “You need to take medicine.” She walked up to her bag she carries around with her and pulled out a bottle, she walked over to him saying, “Course with your condition you can do refills.” She handed it to him

He grabbed it, “I hate pills.” He said sighing

She smiled and looked at the window, “Yeah. But the most important thing is…” She looked at him
and pointed her finger at him, “Don’t hit your head to hard!”

He leaned away saying, “Whoa ok. I get it.”

She nodded as if pleased, “Thought so.” She smiled

He smiled, “Yes nurse Hilary!” He said saluting her

She laughed and stood up, “Ok…” She grabbed his clothes when she walked over to the bag and tossed them to him, “Get dressed. I will be back with a wheel chair.”

Benji clapped his hands, “Whee! Wheel chair!” He laughed

She smiled and walked out

Benji stood up and looked around thinking, “I really need to watch myself when I play baseball this summer.” He started getting dressed

After a few minutes Hilary knocked, “You dressed?” She asked through the door

Benji looked at the door and yelled back, “Yeah.”

Hilary opened the door and came in with a wheel chair, “Usually we walk you downstairs then put you in a wheel chair by the door but your special.” She smiled and opened the wheel chair

He smiled and hoped up to the chair and sat down, “Lets go riding!” He said throwing up his hands

Hilary laughed and started wheeling him down the hall

Benji looked around the hospital halls looking in rooms. He smiled at a lady in a room fairly old and he waved. Made him smile more when she waved back. He looked at Hilary and said, “What happened to her?”

She looked back at the room, “#210?” She looked straight, “Her husband drugged her bad to kill her and it damaged her brain. She’s fairly retarded. Not to sound mean. But she has problems. She doesn’t know how to eat by herself. She needs help all the time.”

Benji looked forward, “How old is she?” He asked

She looked at him, “Seventy-two. Why?” She asked looked straight

Benji smiled and looked down, “No reason.” He looked up, “You know crime doesn’t pay?”

Hilary blinked, “Uh I guess.” She said

Benji smiled and looked up at her, “I want to help suicidal people and people who get hurt by others like their parents or anything. I want to be there for them.” Tears went to his eyes so he looked down, “Also for people whose son or daughters die by others or because of accidents. Or little 3 to some year old kid whose parents abandoned them or died. I just want to be there you know?”

Hilary looked down at him, “No crime doesn’t pay.” She said

Benji looked up, “You know crime isn’t only in murder?” He said

“What?” Hilary said confused

“Yeah. Crime is all over. You, me, everyone.” He started fiddling his thumbs, “See the way I see this world is black. The world is black. That’s what it is. Because people murder, even harassing is a crime. And if you think about it being mad can be a crime cause it can lead to worse. And parents who don’t love their children, there are a crime cause they have them and should love them. And most of people now a days kill for joy, hate rid, anything. Even love.”

“Love? How do you see that?”

Benji looked back at her, “Say there is this man or women that loves another man or women but they can’t have them because the person they love loves someone else. Ok here… lets say there is a guy that loves a friend of yours but your friend loves someone else and not that person. Anger sometimes grows and stops there and they move on but most of them now a days decide what the hell if I cant have you than no one can and either kill the person they love or kill the person they love lover. Or even kill both of them and then kill themselves, or just plain kill themselves to not move on.” He looked down, “There’s a lot of ways to look at it Hilary, you just need to see it.” He closed his eyes then opened them when they got up to the first floor doors to outside.

“So life is crime?” Hilary asked

Benji nodded, “Like what my father did to me six years ago. There’s crime. He thought it was a crime I was born and yet it was a crime for him to do that to me. So many things can be turned evil with anything.” He stood up when he got to his brothers car

Joel got up and opened the door on the passenger’s side. Joel smiled at Hilary

Hilary smiled a little at Joel when Benji got in.

Benji looked at Joel, “Ready bro.” He said smiling

Joel nodded and got in, “You know what today is?”

Benji looked at him, “Nope. I just am happy to get out.” Benji looked out the window

Joel shook his head smiling and started driving, “You’ll be happy when we get home.”

Benji nodded barely hearing Joel

Joel looked at the little calendar on the dashboard thinking in his head, “March 11th bro. Remember?” He looked straight, “He’ll remember when we get home.” Joel smiled to himself
