Ch. 9
Don’t Leave Me
Joel ran up to Hilary, “Where is he?” He said
Hilary shook her head, “I don’t know! I looked…” She looked down
Joel took off running, “Benji!” He called
He ran into the dressing room, “Benji?” He looked around
A note sat on the dresser
Joel walked up and picked it up, opened it, and started reading it
“Joel, I’m sorry. I totally failed everyone. Carry on Good Charlotte with out me. I’m leaving to find a new life, I just hurt you and everyone around me. I love you a lot, good-bye brother.”
Joel dropped the note, “Benji!” He spun around and ran out
Benji sat on a bus leaning his head on the window. Tears were in his eyes and going down his face
“You running?”
Benji jumped and looked beside him
Tony sat there, “It’s ok, trust me. Everyone has their days…” He said looking down
Benji looked away, “I don’t care…” He said sighing
Tony looked at him, “You should. It’s like your dream isn’t it?” He asked
Benji closed his eyes
They sat in silence
Tony reached down and grabbed Benji’s hand and squeezed it, “I’m here for you…” he said in a whispering matter
Benji looked at him then looked at their hands. He paused but pulled his hand free and turned away
Tony blinked, “Benji…” He said but stopped
Benji was crying
Tony looked down
Benji laid his head on the window covering his face
Tony sighed looking down, “You… need to go do something…” He said
Benji shook his head, “I messed up!” screamed tears rolling from his cheeks
Tony looked away tears going to his eyes, “Well… I guess you need to be alone. But I can’t stand you being alone and not able to let anyone help you.”
He stood up and started walking
Benji looked back at him as he walked away, “Tony… I’m so sorry I just…” He stopped and slipped back into his chair and closed his eyes, “What am I supposed to do?” He asked looking down
His head started pounding
He grabbed his head, “Ah… wha…”
The pain moved to his temples
“Ah!” He started screaming in pain crying the world around him pounding
In his head a little boy started screaming with him
Benji opened his eyes his body uncontrollably falling to the side
The little boys scream called out to him and echoed
his screams
“No stop!” He screamed
“No stop!” The little boys voice echoed
Benji collapsed to the floor in front of his seat sobbing
Around him people started standing up and yelling
Benji didn’t hear them all he heard was the child, screaming, crying, dying
“I have an idea… cut you… here to bleed… before your brother and mom…”
The voice of his father echoed in his head the little boys scream in the background
Benji sat up and hit the wall behind him he started breathing heavy, crying, swallowing
A person stood up, “Is there a doctor here!”
“Hurry!”
“He’s going crazy!”
“Mommy! Is that man ok!”
The voices Benji can’t hear flowed in the background of his head
Benji started sitting up from the floor and falling back down and rolling around the small area of the floor in front of his seat holding his head
“Cut you…”
“No!”
Benji sat up his hands flying from his head and dropping to the floor, he let out a deep gasp and froze in sitting position then fell back unconscious
Tony pushed through the crowd, “Benji…”
“Benji…”
“Benji…”
“Mommy! Look what I made mommy!” The little boy ran up to the women holding up a necklace of dandelions
“Oh that is so good!” The women bent down and put her hand on his head
“Mommy we both made it!” The little boy said as his brother ran up
“Yes we did mommy!” The other boy said
“Thank you both!”
Both boys grabbed the necklace and put it around their mom’s neck, “Welcome!” They both said at the same time
They ran off into the lot of dandelions, falling on their backs head to head
“Joel?”
“Yeah Benji?”
“I love you…”
“I love you to brother…”
“Joel?”
Joel laughed a little, “Yes?”
“Don’t leave me… ok?” Benji asked scooting up to where the tops of their heads touched
Joel laid in silence then smiled tears in his eyes, “Ok, as long as you don’t leave me.” He said smiling
Benji nodded, “Ok, I promise.” He said smiling as well
Joel and Benji started laughing
Their laughs started to fade
“He should be ok. You guys are lucky that I was a doctor. We wouldn’t have gotten to town in time and he could’ve went into a coma.”
Benij’s eyes started opening
Tony looked down, “Benji? Oh my god, thank you!” He said bending down and putting his hand on Benji’s forehead and leaning down resting his forehead on the back on his own hand, “Thank god…” He said crying, “Don’t leave me…” he mumbled
Benji blinked and looked at him, “What?” He asked
Tony looked at him not moving his head, “Don’t leave me…” he repeated
Benji sighed tears coming to his eyes then he said, “Ok, as long as you don’t leave me.”
Tony looked up at him and smiled slightly, “I promise.”
“Good.” Benij said smiling, “You are just like Joel, and he wouldn’t leave me…”
Tony smiled and nodded, “I know.” He blinked as Benji sat up
Benji sat there looking forward, “And I told him… I wouldn’t leave him, I’ve broken that.” He said looking down, “No! I haven’t broken that! I need to go to the contest! It doesn’t end till midnight! I need to go back! It isn’t time for me to break a promise, not this time!” He stood up, “Joel hold on I’m coming back!” He said under his breath and watched as the train came to a slow stop, he hardly noticed it was slowing down. He looked at Tony, “Come on Tony, you need to help me so I can save our future!”
Tony smiled and nodded, “Hell yeah!” He said and they ran out of the train
