Ch. 8
The Contest… I Ruined Everything…
Benji and Joel were packing for the karaoke contest. They got their song, name, and they practiced forever when Benji got out of the hospital… The song
was called Little Things, all of them worked so hard to get it right, now that they did they can finally go and win the contest!
Benji looked at Joel then looked away and sighed, “Joel…” He said
Joel looked at him tossing a bag in the back of the van, “Yeah?” He asked and leaned down to get another bag
“You know that Tony guy?” He asked looking down
Joel picked up the suitcase, “Course, why?” He said placing the bag on the back rim of the van and leaning on it looking at him
“He well…”
“What?”
“He kis…” Before Benji could finish Billy, Paul, and Chris walked up
Billy smiled at them, “Now we are ready right?” He said putting the bag in the back
Joel smiled and nodded, “Course!” He said and looked at Benji, “What were you going to say?” He asked looking at him
Benji sighed and shook his head and put his bag in the back
“Hey guys!”
They all looked back, Hilary ran up with a bag
Joel blinked, “What are you doing?” He asked
“Duh! I’m coming with you!” She tossed the bag in the back and put her hand on it and looked at them, “I want to be there when you guys win the contest! And you can’t say no to me!” She said smiling
Joel blinked and crossed his arms, “Watch me… No…” He said looking at her
“To bad!” Hilary said and hopped in the back and crawled to the front and sat in the back seat and looked back at them, “Times a wastin! Lets go!” She said and put her arms behind her back
Joel sighed and rubbed his temples, “Well…” He looked up at her, “What about work?” He asked
Hilary looked back at them, “It this thing in Baltimore?” She asked watching him
“Yeah…” He said
“I took a whole two weeks off!” She said turning back around
“Two weeks!” Billy looked at her, “It’ll be awhile but probably not two weeks!” He said watching her
She sighed and looked back, “I don’t care! Lets just go!” She said laying her head on her arms
Benji smiled at her and walked around the van and looked back at Joel, “I’m driving…” He said and got into the drivers side
Joel waved his hand, “Gah! I give up!” He said and shut the door to the back and walked around to the passengers side and got in
Billy looked at Paul and Chris, “All… four… of us are going to have to fit in the back…” He said looking at Hilary
She smiled and shook her head and looked straight
“Right…” Paul said and walked around the side Hilary wasn’t sitting on and waited
Billy sighed and walked around and crawled into the van beside Hilary
Chris got in by Billy then Paul got in
They took off
Billy looked at Hilary
Hilary pulled out headphones and a CD player out of her extra bag she had and put on the headphones. She looked at Billy out of the corner of her eye
Billy looked away and looked down at his hands
She smiled some and looked to the side out the window
Hours later they got to a building and are in the back
Benji looked at Joel, “Ok… This is going to be interesting!” He laughed looking down
Joel nodded, “I’m kinda… nervous…” He said looking at the others
Billy walked forward with his bag and his guitar case, “I think… we can do this…” He looked at Benji
Benji sighed, “I can’t… I don’t know…” he said looking down
Billy put his arm around Benji’s shoulders, “Sure you can! Lets go!”
After awhile they are all punked up and jumping up and down doing exercises, Joel was jump roping
Benji sat there playing his guitar
In the background they heard a person on a microphone, “Now introducing the punk rock dudes, new, so be nice friends but if they suck let em have it! Alright! Introducing Good Charlotte!”
Benji and Joel nodded to each other and they all walked out there. Benji looked around at the crowd the light beaming down at him. He squinted his eyes and looked at Joel
Joel put his microphone to his lips and blew on it some then looked back at them and nodded
Billy nodded and they all started to play
Joel started, “Yeah this song is dedicated to every kid who ever got picked last for gym class,” he said nodding
Benji opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out
Joel continued not noticing, “To every kid who never had a date to no school dance”
Benji looked down
“To everyone whose ever been called a freak” Joel said and looked back at Benji yelling, “Here we go”
Benji looked at him still playing
Joel gave him a come on look still going, “What? What? Come on What!?”
Billy ran up by Joel and started singing with Joel, “Ohhhhhhh”
Joel started the song looking out into the crowd singing, “Like the time in school when we got free lunch and the cool kids beat us up,” And Joel made
a punching form with his arm and kept going, “And the rich kids had convertibles and we had to ride the bus” He looked back at Benji
Billy looked at him
Benji stood there looking down
Joel looked forward singing, “Like the time we made the baseball team but they still laughed at us”
Billy cut in on Benji’s part, “You still suck.” He said
“Like the time that girl broke up with me cuz I wasn't cool enough” while Joel sang that he looked back at Benji then everyone but Benji jumped up when Joel yelled, “TRICK!”
Benji took off his guitar and tossed it to the floor and he started walking
Joel blinked, “Benji?”
Everyone started screaming and booing Benji while he walked off the stage
Joel looked at Billy
Billy looked at him then looked forward
Joel took off running after Benji followed by Billy
The crowd continued to boo.
