After the movie had finished, Emily and Patrick made their way back to his car and he drove her back to the Clayton’s house, a place Emily now called her second home. As they pulled up in front of the house, Emily turned to look at Patrick as he turned the car engine off.
“So tonight was great,” she said looking him in the eye.
“Glad you enjoyed it,” Patrick smiled, “Do you have to go inside now? Or…?”
“Well,” Emily said quickly glancing over at the house. She saw no lights on and decided the Clayton’s had all gone to bed, “I can stay…if you’d like me too.”
Patrick nodded, “I’d like that.”
Emily leant forward and kissed Patrick before he put his arm around her and she snuggled into him. They then stayed just like that for quite some time enjoying the company of one another.
In the early hours of the morning, Emily reluctantly decided she better go inside and get some sleep, so she looked up at Patrick from where she was in his arms and they kissed once more.
“I’ll ring you tomorrow,” Patrick said stroking Emily’s hair, “And we can arrange a time to catch up and start working on the song.”
Emily nodded, “And we can organise another date too?”
“Yeah, you know we could put them together. You can come over to my place, we can work on the song and I can cook…well attempt to cook dinner.”
Emily laughed, “Attempt to cook?”
“Yeah, I’ll do my best!” Patrick said pretending to look hurt at her comment.
“It sounds good,” Emily said reassuring him. It did indeed sound good to her, going to Patrick’s house and him cooking just for her…it sounded very romantic.
“Well, night then Patrick,” she said suppressing a yawn as she was feeling quite tired.
“Goodnight Emily,” he replied.
She got out of his car and waved goodbye before walking up to the house, letting herself in and collapsing on her bed without even a glance over at Sarah. Emily then fell into a quick sleep thinking about how good the date had been.
The next morning Emily awoke to find Sarah wasn’t asleep in her bed. Usually Sarah slept in as much as she could in the morning, so Emily found it strange that she wasn’t huddled in her bed fast asleep. Emily also noticed another strange thing, Sarah’s bed was untouched; the bed covers were not crumpled up like Sarah always left them when she awoke. Emily sat up with a confused expression on her face and wondered where on earth Sarah was. She decided to look around the house but couldn’t find her anywhere, instead she found Greg in the dining room.
“Morning,” he said glancing up at Emily from the newspaper he was reading.
“Good morning,” Emily replied.
“Sarah still asleep?” Greg asked.
“Um,” Emily was about to say she had no idea where Sarah was until it suddenly dawned on her that Sarah was going out with Pete the night before, just like her and Patrick. She must have decided to stay at Pete’s or something. Quickly Emily decided to cover for her friend, she knew that Greg and Liz wouldn’t be too impressed knowing their only daughter was still out…and most probably in Pete’s bed.
“She actually went to get some DVDs,” Emily said quickly. It was the only cover up story she could think of in one second.
Greg seemed to buy the story and returned to reading his paper. Emily sighed and went back to her and Sarah’s room to ring the absent Sarah. She picked up her phone, dialled Sarah’s number and waited for her to pick up. After many rings Sarah finally answered.
“Hello?” She said in what sounded like a very tired voice.
“Sarah!” Emily exclaimed, “You have to get back, your dad’s up and I had to lie about where you were.”
“Crap!” Emily heard Sarah say, and then she heard Pete mumble, “What’s wrong?” In the background. Sarah explained the situation to Pete and then returned to the phone.
“I’m sorry Em, I’ll get Pete to drop me back now alright?”
“Park round the corner so your parents don’t see you and bring some DVDs…I said you were out getting some,” Emily said exasperatingly.
“Okay, see you soon,” Sarah said before hanging up.
Emily hung up also and then lay back in her bed. She couldn’t believe Sarah had left her to clean up her mess…to lie. Most of all she couldn’t believe that Sarah and Pete’s relationship was developing so quickly that Sarah was now staying the night at his place…in his bed.
One thing was for certain, Emily was happy to take her relationship with Patrick a little slower than Sarah and Pete had with theirs. But she also knew in her heart that Patrick would be the one for her to go further with for the first time in her life.
