Chapter 1
The night was dark, cold, and raining. Kaitlyn locked up the coffee shop and walked to the bank. She hated closing up. She didn’t have a car and always worried if someone would attack her. Kaitlyn got to the bank and looked around. She put in the password for the night deposit box.
“Hey, girly.”
A man said to her right. Another man came to her left.
“What do you have there?”
“Please leave me alone.”
The man on her right took her arm and the other one took the money.
“Why don’t you and I have a little fun.”
“No, please. Just take the money.”
He grabbed her and pushed her down, He looked down and started unbuckling his belt.
“Oh, god. Stop.”
Kaitlyn started to back up.
“Get her and hold her down.”
“We were just going to take the money.”
“Well, I want to have some fun and if you want you can too.”
Kaitlyn started thrashing around.
“Keep her still, Dammit. If you have to, hit her.”
“Come on, let’s go.”
“No. Now hold her.”
The one in charge got on top of her. Kaitlyn kept trying to get free. He slapped her.
“Fuck. Stop moving around.”
He unbuttoned her jeans and pulled them down. She got one of her arms free and scratched the man’s face. He slapped her a few more times and she hit her head on the pavement. Before she lost consciousness she seen a reddish-blonde and dark green eyed man standing above the man trying to rape her.

“Andy, how is she?”
“She’ll be fine. A little bump on the head and some scrapes.”
“Thanks for looking her over.”
Patrick wiped a strand of her hair out of her face.
“You can’t keep her here. It’s not safe.”
“I know. I’m just going to keep her here until she wakes up.”
“Alright. I have to get going. See you later.”
Patrick watched Andy leave and closed the door. He went back to the bed and sat down.
“You need to wake up soon. I need to get you back home.”
All of a sudden the door opened.
“It’s true. Patty has a girl. Wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it.”
“Shut the fuck up, Pete.”
Patrick got off the bed and was trying to usher Pete out the door, but Pete moved to the bed.
“Not bad.”
“Will you please leave?”
“Does she know?”
“I haven’t talked to her yet. She was being raped and was knocked out. When she wakes up I’m taking her home.”
“Sure you are.”
“What’s that suppose to mean?”
“She’ll be sticking around. Be honest with me. You’ve been following her around.”
Patrick went to the window.
“I first seen her at the coffee shop about 6 months ago. I haven’t felt this way ever before. She might be the one, Pete.”
He turned around.
“How did you know when Ashlee was yours?”
“Right away. When I seen her tending to the horses I knew she was mine.”
“What am I going to do?”
Kaitlyn moaned. Pete and Patrick turned their attention to her.
“You better think of something.”
Pete left and Patrick went to the bed. He sat down and took her hand.
“Wake up. God, I don’t even know your name.”
Kaitlyn opened her eyes. She took one look at Patrick and backed up and took her hand from his.
“It’s alright. I’m not one of them.”
“What happened?”
“I came upon you at the bank. They got away though. I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s alright. You saved me.”
“What’s your name?”
“Kaitlyn Harper.”
“Nice to meet you. My name is Patrick Stumph.”
He shook her hand and she smiled.
“I should take you home. How are you feeling?”
“Good. A little hungry.”
“Would you like some breakfast?”
“Yeah. Let me freshen up first.”
Patrick helped her and showed her to the bathroom. A few minutes later Kaitlyn came out of the bathroom.
“Here. I found your purse last night. They didn’t take it.”
“Oh, thank you so much.”
She hugged him.
“Oh, your cold. You better get a jacket.”
“Yeah. I’ll be right back.”
Patrick grabbed a hoodie and they left. Patrick drove to a restaurant that was in town.
“You live far from town. You should of just took me to the hospital.”
“It was okay. I didn’t know about insurance and all that. I didn’t mind.”
“Thank you. I forgot to tell you that your house is beautiful. Do you live by yourself?”
“Sort of. I live with my brothers. There is four parts of the house and we each have a part. It’s like living by yourself, but we can go to the other parts of the house.”
“That must be nice. I’m an only child. I hate being alone.”
Patrick took her hand.
“Your never alone.”
“I sometimes feel someone is with me. It’s strange.”
“I understand. Here we are.”
Patrick got out and opened Kaitlyn’s door.
“Thank you. I didn’t think guys still did that.”
“Some do. Not many, but some.”
They went into the restaurant and sat down. Kaitlyn ordered eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee. Patrick ordered coffee and toast.
“Aren’t you hungry?”
“Not really. I’m fine.”
“You seem different.”
“Thanks. I hope it’s a good thing.”
“I’m not sure.” She smiled.
“I have to use the rest room. I’ll be right back.”
Kaitlyn walked through the bar. They were setting up for the day. The TV was on to the local news.
“Two bodies were found in the river early this morning.” Kaitlyn stopped and watched the news.
“The bodies are male, early 20’s, and dressed in jeans and t-shirts. The coroner will have the autopsy reports by tomorrow.”
“Jane, is there anything else about the bodies?”
“Yes, both were drained of their blood and they had marks on their necks. The police are calling them the Vampire Murders. And one of the males jeans and underwear were below his knees. Like he was being raped or he raped someone. The police would like anyone who has information to come forward.”
“Thank you.”
“Oh my god.” Kaitlyn whispered.
She ran back to the table and all that went through her mind was hearing about the men.
“What did you do?” She asked Patrick.
“What?”
“On the news, the men were found in the river. I know it was them. Did you kill them?”
“Keep your voice down and sit down.”
Kaitlyn sat across from Patrick.
“Did you kill them? Answer me.”
“Of course not. How do you know it was them?”
“I don’t, but what happened?”
“Look, you don’t want to know. Just drop it.”
“I will not. What the hell happened?”
“I did kill them, but it’s not what you think.”
“Oh my god.” Kaitlyn put her hands over her mouth.
“Why?”
It was to save you.
She heard Patrick say it but his lips didn’t move.
“Did you say something?”
“You heard me?”
“What’s going on?”
“Kaitlyn, I’m a vampire.” She laughed.
“That’s good. I guess I should of told you I’m a witch.”
“I’m not lying. I know it’s hard to believe. I was born in 1915. When I was 24 I was turned into a vampire.”
“Quit fucking with me. I’m leaving now. It was nice meeting you, but if those are the men I will be going to the police.”
She left Patrick in the restaurant alone.
