I’m not sure how much time passed before I heard the tinkling of keys, the door opening to reveal dark brown hair strewn disheveled across his face, his olive eyes prominent even beneath the veil.

“Where’s Gee?” He stared around the room, his eyes scanning around the house as his eyebrows furrowed. I remained curled up by the front door, my eyes downcast as my mind replayed the events of the day, Gerard’s words still fresh in my memory; fear had created a thousand scenario’s, each worse than the last and all ending with me, alone.

I felt his eyes turn to me, felt him crouch down in front of me, his eyes burning into my head as I continued to stare at the floor, finding the interlocking hardwood increasingly fascinating.

“Kaelin…where’s Gerard?” I could hear the barely controlled anger lacing his words, knew that his fists would be clenched, his jaw locked, breathing out of his nose as he waited for my answer. Without lifting my eyes, I offered the only answer my brain was willing to conjure.

“He knows.” I didn’t need to look up to see his eyes widen, his mouth drop slightly open as his heart rate increased at my words, before he controlled his shock, yanking my chin upwards, his fingers lodged beneath it, forcing my eyes to his.

“What the hell do you mean? Where is he?!” The anger that was barely controlled moments before seemed to have melted like butter, disappearing through the barely discernable cracks of the hardwood, leaving only an emotion I had grown quite accustomed to, etched into his features; fear. It was practically pouring out of him as he stared down at me, his fingers still holding my chin.

“He knew and I made him leave.” His fingers released my chin, standing upright suddenly as his eyes looked wildly around, his hands now running desperately through his hair, before wiping across his face, temporarily hiding the features I was gaping at, my own fear dulling in the face of his.

He swallowed several times, his mouth opening and shutting before his vocal cords abided his thoughts.

“Do you have any idea what this could mean? Do you know what happens if he goes to the police with this?” Desperation laced his words sending a cold shiver down my spine as I remained unmoving. “Why didn’t you deny it?! Why’d you have to make him leave? Oh god, oh god…” Suddenly, those blazing eyes turned to mine, a fire I recognized burning within the emerald embers. “Did you even try to deny it Kael, or did you just tell him outright?” I felt my eyes widen at the accusation; he stepped closer, his eyes burned bright, searing through me. “Maybe you want to be found? You want to go back to all of that, to him?” I shook my head frantically, using my hands to lift myself from the floor, fear once again filling my veins.

“No Frankie I -” He cut me off, advancing on me still.

“Don’t fucking lie to me Kael! I can’t believe you’d betray me like this!” He grasped my shoulders beneath those callused fingers, pressing firmly into the soft flesh, his face looming closer. “After everything that I risked for you! I thought that meant something, but I guess that was all a lie too, god, I never should have agreed to any of this!”

Tears were streaming frantically down my cheeks as I tried to choke down the sob that was suffocating me, making it near impossible to talk, to make Frankie understand.

“No! Frankie, please!” He stared over at me, anger and something else, residing beneath the olive orbs I had fallen into a thousand times before, something I had never seen before; hurt.

“Get away from me Kael…I’m going to call Gerard, try to figure this whole thing out, but you need to get the fuck away from me or I will not be held accountable.” I watched in horror as he turned his back on me, already walking away. Lurching forwards, I grabbed onto the back of his shirt, forcing him to turn around to meet my waterlogged sapphires.

“Frankie…” My voice broke at the sight; his eyes were bright, a thin layer of moisture visible drowning the green beneath. “I swear I didn’t tell him…I would never do something to jeopardize what we have…everything that you’ve done.” I choked back another sob threatening to turn me to a babbling idiot, shaking with the realization that all of my worries were slowly coming true if I failed to make him understand and believe me. “I love you!” His eyes widened slightly at my sudden admission, a fact that I clung to as I waited, holding my breath, for his response.

“I, uh…I need to call Gee…” His eyes darted around the room, landing on everything but me, crumbling with lost hope and a sea of tears as he shot out of the room.

I heard half of the phone conversation between Frankie and Gerard, grit my teeth at the desperation and pleading I heard in Frankie’s voice as he pleaded with his friend to not do anything drastic, to believe him, to come over so they could talk.

I know that Gerard agreed because Frankie told me so as he dashed up the stairs two at a time, claiming he needed a shower. I felt like he needed to get away from me. He hadn’t so much as looked at me since my earlier admission, a fact which was quickly eating away my internal organs; the balloon of warmth and hope that had expanded itself in my chest at my announcement had long since been deflated, leaving only a cold empty place where I should have been.

I knew I should have put some sort of food out, made coffee, anything to help suck up to our “guest”, but my body was far too incapacitated to move from my place on the chair, watching the shadows play across the wall, visible only in the afternoon sunlight, disappearing as it set, leaving only darkness. I found envy towards those shadows, their lives merely minutes long before they were swallowed whole.

The chime of the doorbell announcing Gerard’s arrival jerked me away from the comfort of the couch, my eyes darting to the stairs, my ears catching the pounding water from the shower. Reluctantly, I headed towards the door, quietly devising my own explanation for our guest.

Pulling open the door, my eyes fell on white blonde hair, caramel eyes bright beneath dark sunglasses, the black leather jacket zipped almost to the chin against the cool fall air; except none of those things met my eyes.

Where all of those things should have been, there was something else; someone who stopped the blood cold in my veins.
