1Ambiance
A thin strip of light permeated the surrounding darkness, the gentle hum of breathing the only sound that infiltrated the room of two. Silently, I lay unmoving in the undersized bedroom, waiting patiently to be convinced that Gerard had finally fallen back asleep; a feat I hadn’t realized would take him nearly three hours.

Daylight was approaching and I knew that my chance for success was dwindling. Stilling my breath I swung my legs over the side of the bed, slipping off and grabbing my bag before sneaking out of the room, the door closing with a soft click, sealing my fate as well as any option of returning.

Trembling fingers push pen to paper, words scrambled like a foreign language before sorting themselves into English.

Gerard,
I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done – I certainly didn’t deserve it.
Please don’t follow me, or come looking; I need to do this on my own.
Thanks again.
- Kael

One last breath tumbled through my quaking body before I slipped the note beneath the door, my back turning away from any salvageable sanity and headed towards what I could easily discern as disaster.

Cursing as the frigid air sliced mercilessly through secreted chasms of my stolen sweater I wrapped my arms more securely around my fractured and shaking body doing my best to hold all the pieces together as I scanned the empty streets for any sign of a cab. Seconds spun themselves into minutes and then a quarter of an hour before the dented yellow whipped into sight, the putrid scent of gasoline filling the air as it puffed its way to a stop before me.

“You need a ride somewhere lady?” Nodding my head seemed almost pointless the way my body was convulsing against the cold.

“Bus station.” A small smile played itself against his thin lips, curling up the corners as he took in my worn appearance.

“You all alone?” Pulling open the back door, I felt the stale air pressing itself against my skin already, its warmth welcome despite the odor that accompanied it; I shook my head quickly in response to his question.

“No, I’m meeting my boyfriend there, he’s on his way home from military training camp.” His lips dropped immediately as the lie slipped silkily from my tongue, my face alighting with surprise and satisfaction as I snuggled against the rough leather of the seat, the elation welcome.

The ride took barely enough time to settle into the warmth before the driver was barking the cost at me. Twenty seven fifty. Shaking my head in disgust, I handed over the green slips before throwing myself back into the cold and rushing for the glass doors. My eyes quickly scanned over the list of destinations, locking on my intended target.

“One way to Colorado please.” Another exchange of green transpires before I’m handed my flimsy white ticket, it’s significance hardly believable as I sit restlessly watching the black television announce the arriving and departing buses until it finally announces my own.

Scrambling up, I heave my bag onto my shoulders, my feet already pulling my body up the staircase and through the narrow hallway before finding an empty seat and lowering myself into it.

Dazedly, I study the rest of the passengers entering the bus; a mother pulling a small blonde haired boy along by the hand, his scowl clearly being ignored as his fingers gently touched each seat he passed before they settled into a pair of seats ten back from my own. Next, two teenagers, a boy and girl, each no older than seventeen, their dark hair falling into each of their faces making them resemble siblings, though their gaze said otherwise. An elderly couple came next, the man leading his wife as they scanned the seating options, each offering me a gentle smile as they passed along. A family of four enter last, a small baby residing within the arms of the mother while a pigtailed girl drifted along after her father, her arms swinging carelessly at her sides, her lips pressed together to hum quietly to herself as her parents whisper to each other, sparing glances at the other passengers before finally settling on seats.

A game of guessing ensues; where might each be headed? Perhaps some might be returning to loved ones, their homecoming bringing smiles and tears to their welcoming committee. Conceivably some might be running from an unwanted past, glancing nervously over their shoulders for some ghost that follows in their forgotten shadows just waiting to pounce. Still more might be looking for a new start, a chance to redeem themselves or utilize a new opportunity with a smile. A trill of fear rips through my spine as I consider that perhaps at least one other might be running towards their past like I am. A beacon of fear lighting their path as they race towards what might be their last adventure, their last stand, or perhaps their first, a decision to finally end what should have never started.

Sighing, my fingers unzip the front pocket of my bag even as the bus rumbles to life, the gentle hum vibrating the seats as I press the phone against my ear, the ring so shrill I’m sure it’s drowning out the engine.

“Kaelin?! God! Are you okay? Where are you?” Pressing my eyes shut as tightly as they go, I wrap my free arm around my knees as they compress against my chest.

“I just wanted to call to say that I’m sorry, for everything, and that, that I love you more than anything.” I could feel my throat tightening against the words that escaped its confines, my teeth biting into my bottom lip.

“Kaelin, please, just tell me where you are. I’m so sorry for everything, just please, come home!” The burning beneath my clamped eyelids reminded me that the conversation was coming to a close.

“I’m sorry. I love you Frankie. Bye.” Snapping shut the phone cut off any more objections that might have skated their way past my ears, my fingers already pulling off the battery panel, tossing both sections into the bottom of my bag before wrapping themselves around my body once again as all the broken bits of my body caved in on one another, leaving me a fractured kaleidoscope trembling beneath the glare of the street lights filtering their way through the windows of the flying bus.
