Despite what Spencer had said to him, Brendon continued to go see Ryan every night that he could. This had been going on for about two months when one night Ryan was waiting outside on the steps when Brendon got there.

“What are you doing?” Brendon asked, surprised.

Ryan, who had been staring at his feet, looked up with a grin. “I was hoping you’d be here tonight! My friend Jon is having a party, and I was hoping you’d go with me. They’re usually pretty boring, but Jon always whines if I don’t go,” Ryan explained.

“Sure, I”ll go!” Brendon agreed, because there was really no point in not going.

“Great,” Ryan said, standing up. “Jon lives just down the street, come on.” He grabbed a hold of Brendon’s hand and started down the street, pulling Brendon along with him. Brendon was a little surprised that Ryan had just grabbed his hand, and thought about what Spencer had said for a second, but decided there was no problem with just holding his hand.

“Don’t worry too much if Jon totally hates you at first. He thinks the whole stalker thing is really weird, which, you know...” Ryan said.

“It is?” Brendon said with a smile.

“Yeah,” Ryan said with a laugh. “But I’m sure he’ll like you once he gets to know you.”

Brendon nodded. He honestly didn’t really care what Ryan’s friend thought.
“And don’t mind if his friends get drunk and hit on you. It always happens,” Ryan said. “And somebody might throw up on you. That usually happens to everybody at least once.”

Brendon just stared at Ryan for a minute. He had started to forget exactly how weird humans were...but now he remembered again.

Ryan noticed Brendon’s shocked look. “I guess you haven’t been to many parties, have you?” Ryan asked with a laugh. Brendon shook his head. “Well don’t worry. If I can handle them, I’m sure you can.”

They walked down the street a little bit more before they came to an apartment building that was practically radiating bright lights and loud music from the top floor.

"We're here," Ryan said. "Don't worry, Jon doesn't expect me to stay for very long." He went into the apartment and started up the stairs. There were actually quite a few other people on the stairs as well.

"Why does he have parties like this?" Brendon asked.

"His apartment's really big and his landlord doesn't really care what happens, so all his other friends try to make him have them," Ryan explained.

"You guys don't even seem like you have anything in common," Brendon said, confused.

Ryan shrugged and said, "We don't, really. In 8th grade he used to copy my homework on the bus and we ended up hanging out."

"That's weird," Brendon said.

"You're a stalker. I hardly think you have room to judge," Ryan pointed out. They got the the top floor where the sound of blaring music was even worse. Ryan pushed through all the people crowded by the door and then walked through the apartment until he found the black-haired human Brendon recognized as Jon.

"Hey, Jon. I'm here," Ryan said.

Jon grinned at him but then frowned when he saw Brendon. "So this is your creepy stalker," he said.

"His name's Brendon and he's not that creepy," Ryan said.

Jon continued glaring at Brendon. "Don't get drunk around him. He'll probably take you home and rape you," he said.

"First of all, have I ever even gotten drunk at one of your parties before?" Ryan asked, raising his eyebrow.

"He might be a bad influence!" Jon said, taking a big sip out of his beer as he spoke. "You know how crazy stalkers are."

"Yeah, they like Moulin Rouge and ballroom dancing and think parties like this are stupid," Ryan said.

"Yeah, well, it's your virginity," Jon said. "If you want to get raped then go ahead."

"Who wants to get raped?" a random black-haired guy asked, walking over. "Ryan's adorable new friend?"

Jon shook his head and said, "It's not his friend, it's his stalker. And no, I don't think he does, but maybe you should. Teach him a lesson."

"A lesson in sex!" the guy replied cheerfully.

"Gabe, go molest some other complete stranger, okay?" Ryan said, rolling his eyes. "This one's mine."

"Oh, so you're going to be doing the sex with him!" Gabe said, wiggling his eyebrows. Then he turned to Jon and said, "Hi, let's go make out!"

"Hi, I'm not that desperate," Jon said. "Seriously, Gabe. Find somebody else." Gabe pouted but then stumbled away.

"Anyway, Ry, don't drink. I'm going to talk to some other people now, I think Gabe's hot friend is here," Jon said. "We can hang out later. Don't get raped." He then pretty much tripped his way across the room.

"Wow," was all Brendon had to say.

"Yeah," Ryan agreed. "Come on, let's go sit on the stairs. It's a lot quieter there." Brendon nodded and they pushed their way back into the hallway. They went down the stairs just enough to be away from all the other people and sat down.

They ended up talking about music for a while before Ryan randomly said, "I'm not usually this trusting, you know."

"What?" Brendon asked, confused.

"I mean, with you. With how I just invited you in and stuff. I'm actually really shy. Like, Jon's the only friend I have and that's because he wouldn't leave me alone for a few years," Ryan said.

"Oh," Brendon said, surprised, because Ryan hadn't seemed shy to him at all. He couldn't understand why such a cool human wouldn't have more friends.

"Yeah," Ryan said kind of awkwardly. "I just can't really trust people, but for some reason, I feel like I can trust you."

"Thank you," Brendon said quietly, unsure if what one said in response to something like that.

Ryan smiled and moved over closer to Brendon. "And, I mean, I don't really know you, but I think I really like you," Ryan said.

Brendon grinned. "Me too."

Ryan laughed. "I figured as much since you were stalking me," he said. Then he leaned closer to Brendon, and Brendon thought for a second that maybe kissing him would be a bad idea, but he quickly forgot it once he felt Ryan's lips on his. The kiss was kind of awkward and brief, but as soon as it was over, Brendon kissed him again, harder and longer. Ryan giggled when they broke apart for air, and he was blushing, but they kept on kissing.

As they kissed, Brendon couldn't help but think about Ryan's blood, so close to him, but he fought it back as much as he could, trying to just concentrate on Ryan's mouth instead. He was actually impressed by how much self control he had, because even when they were kissing and touching and everything was just Ryan everywhere, he didn't bite him. This would be fine. Spencer was wrong.

It wasn't long before they were full on making out on the stairs, causing somebody who walked by to yell, "Get a room."

After that, Ryan pulled away again, but he was smiling. "Maybe we should take their advice," he said. "And go do this someplace else."

Brendon pouted. "But I don't want to stop now."

Ryan giggled again and stood up, pulling Brendon up with him. "We could go back to my apartment. You know, maybe do more," Ryan said.

"Yes!" Brendon agreed a little too quickly and tried to pull Ryan down the stairs.

"Wait," Ryan said with a laugh. "I have to tell Jon I'm leaving."

Brendon pouted but followed Ryan back up the stairs and into Jon's apartment. After a few minutes of searching, they finally found Jon, but he was busy making out with Gabe on the couch.

"You know what, I'm pretty sure he won't even realize I'm gone," Ryan said. "Man, I'm going to have to take a picture of this to show him later. He'll be so embarrassed." He took out a strange device that looked more like a phone than a camera, at least from what Brendon knew, but Ryan took a picture with it so it must've been a camera. Finally, Ryan put the camera/phone thing back into his pocket and they started back to Ryan's apartment.

The trip took a lot longer than it had seemed to on the way to Jon's, and it didn't help that Brendon kept on distracting Ryan by trying to kiss him, earning them many strange glances from passerbyers. Eventually they made it back to Ryan's apartment, although it took a while getting in because Brendon kept on kissing Ryan while Ryan was trying to unlock the door.

As soon as they were in the apartment and the door was shut behind them, Brendon pulled Ryan onto the couch and started kissing him. Brendon wrapped his arms around Ryan, pulling him even closer, and didn't stop kissing him until Ryan finally pulled him back because he had breathe. Brendon kissed Ryan on the lips again, quickly, and then again, a little bit longer, and then he kissed him hard again. He could taste him, and it was so good, and then he trailed kisses down Ryan's cheek to his neck without even thinking about it, and oh, he was so close to his veins, and suddenly he was tasting Ryan again, but it was different. It was coopery and...oh. Oh shit. He had bitten him.

He pulled away as soon as he realized he had done and he could see the beautiful river of blood running from Ryan's neck and he just wanted to drink it again, but he could also see Ryan's beautiful brown eyes full of fear. Ryan stood there in shock and then snapped out of it, moving his hand to his neck and then pulling is away to see the blood. "Oh my god," he said, staring at Brendon with that terrified look again. "What are you?"
Brendon debated on what to do. He knew what could happen if he let Ryan turn, and Ryan's blood looked so delicious. At the same time, a big part of him knew he couldn't stand to kill Ryan. Ryan was still staring at him, expecting some sort of explanation, and Brendon knew he didn't have much time before Ryan would start to turn. Turning was a painful process, and one that would involve Ryan going through all sorts of freaking out, and Brendon wasn't even sure he could handle that.

Finally, he decided there was no way he could kill Ryan, but besides that, he wasn't sure what to do. He knew he needed to talk to Spencer right away, but he wasn't sure what he was supposed to be about Ryan while he did so. Remembering that the bathroom in Ryan's apartment had no windows, he pulled Ryan into it and then shut him in there, moving all of the furniture in front of it. It wouldn't keep Ryan in there once he turned, but since that was usually a long process, Brendon was sure it would at least work while he went and talked to Spencer. As soon as he was sure it would be enough for a while, he left the apartment to go find Spencer.

As soon as Brendon walked in the door, Spencer demanded, “You bit him, didn’t you? What did I tell you, Brendon? Seriously!”

“How do you know these things?” Brendon asked, but he had to admit he was amazed. At least this meant Spencer could probably easily come up with a solution.

“I just know you,” Spencer said. “And you’re an idiot, so I knew this would happen.”

“I need help, Spence!” Brendon said. “Really.”

Spencer said, “How long has it been?”

“I just bit him. I went to tell you right away,” Brendon explained.

Spencer looked worried. “Well, where is he?”

“Don’t worry. He’ll be fine until he turns, and we have some time,” Brendon said.

“Then you need to go kill him why it’s still easy. Or put a stake in him, if you don’t make it in time,” Spencer said, matter-of-factly.

“What?” Brendon demanded, turning pale. He had thought Spencer would help him...

“You know you have to, Bren. You said you wouldn’t get attached,” Spencer pointed out.

Brendon shook his head and said, “I lied. There’s no way I can kill him.”

“You have to,” Spencer said.

Brendon glared at Spencer and said determinedly, “No.”

Spencer rolled his eyes. “Then you’re going to have to keep him a secret. Take him someplace where he can’t get away and bring him food. You know how much work a young vampire is, plus this is one you’ll have to keep from getting caught. It might be more than you can handle,” Spencer said.

“He said he really liked me, Spencer. He kissed me. I can’t just kill him,” Brendon explained. “He said he trusted me.”

“And you’ve already gone and destroyed that, why does it even matter?” Spencer asked.

Brendon suddenly realized that when Spencer said it. Of course, Ryan wouldn’t trust him after what he had done. That didn’t change anything, however. He still couldn’t kill him.

”I really like him. Maybe I even love him,” Brendon said, pretending he was confident. “I know everything will work out okay.”

Spencer shrugged. “Whatever. Now we need to go and make sure your little boyfriend is someplace where he’s safe from sunlight, sunrise is only a few hours away. You’re going to have to stay with him tonight, I’ll make an excuse for you if William finds out you aren’t here.”

“But I can’t take care of him all by myself!” Brendon protested. “He’s going to be all psycho!”

“Then kill him,” Spencer said. “We can’t both go, and I’m not taking care of this for you. You’re older than me, for heaven’s sake. It’s not like I should have to babysit you.”

“Spencer. Seriously,” Brendon begged. “What am I supposed to do?”
Spencer’s expression softened and he stopped his all-business attitude. “Brendon, there isn’t anything else you can do but go and help him. You’ve done this to him, and he’s going to need your help now. You can take care of him. Just get through tonight and I’ll help you with figuring everything out, but right now, you don’t have much time,” Spencer said, softly. “You can do this, Bren.”

Brendon shook his head, knowing it was too late to pretend he was confident at all. “I can’t,” he said, eyes starting to water.

Spencer rolled his eyes but then pulled Brendon into a short and awkward hug. Still, it wasn’t like Spencer to give Brendon hugs, so Brendon grinned at him. “Go and help him. You can,” Spencer said, and Brendon nodded. He could make it through tonight with crazy Ryan...at least, he hoped he could. And he knew that if he did, Spencer would help him out. That was all it would take.

“Good luck,” Spencer said as Brendon left, and Brendon just nodded, knowing he would need it. It had been a long time since he had seen a turning vampire, but it was hard to forget something like that once you had gone through it.

He knew this was going to be pure hell.
