Ryan was still a young vampire, which meant he had to feed pretty much every day or so, and every time he would he would be all guilty and sad and look so broken just like had that first night. Brendon hated it because it made him feel guilty too. Finally, after a week of this, Brendon knew he would have to find some way to solve this problem. The only thing he could think of was asking Pete what he had done. So that’s what he did.

The thing about Pete was that he was really scary. He had managed to escape from William once before. He had even tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to destroy all the other vampires. Still, he was a vampire hunter, and he had killed plenty of them. So even though Brendon knew Pete was behind bars that he couldn’t get through, he was still terrified when he snuck into William’s dungeons to see Pete.

Brendon walked into the room where Pete was really slowly. Pete was sitting on the floor, on the other end of the bars, but he glared at Brendon when he walked in, which only made him more afraid. “Well, what do you want?” Pete demanded, like he knew Brendon was here for something other than the usual.

“I have a question,” Brendon asked.

Pete raised his eyebrow.

“Back when, um, before, uh,” Brendon stuttered.

“What?” Pete asked, sounding annoyed.

“How did you feed without drinking blood?” Brendon asked. “What did you do?”

Pete looked very surprised. “Well...I...I don’t know. Patrick made something,” Pete said, after a minute.

“Patrick?” Brendon asked. “Who’s Patrick?”

“He was one of the other vampire hunters. He should be here, somewhere,” Pete said. “Why? I doubt you’ve suddenly grown a conscience.”

“Maybe I have,” Brendon said. He doubted Pete would actually tell William, because what good would that do him, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to tell Pete anyway.

“Did you turn some kid who hates you now for making him a killer?” Pete asked.

“Why would you think that?” Brendon asked. Seriously, why did everybody already know this?

“I think everybody knows you’re stupid enough to get yourself in a situation like that,” Pete said.

Brendon pouted. He hadn’t realized that everybody thought he was stupid. “I’m not,” he tried to protest, knowing it didn’t matter what he said. “I just made a mistake.”

Pete just rolled his eyes. “It’s too bad you didn’t grow a conscience, though,” he said. “You know you shouldn’t kill people.”

”We’re vampires. We’re supposed to,” Brendon said.

“Because William says it’s okay? If there’s a way to avoid, why shouldn’t we? We were humans once too. It’s sick that we do such a thing,” Pete said.

“I was a vegetarian,” Brendon said, and just for a second, he remembered how much he had hated being a vampire at first. He had just let William convince him otherwise but maybe...maybe he was wrong.

Pete laughed, he actually laughed, which surprised Brendon. “Than I think you know what I mean.”

“The boy I bit...he asked if he lose our souls when we become a vampire,” Brendon said quietly.

Pete smiled. “Some do, I suppose. Vegetarians who let themselves continue to kill people, they might. Vampires who think it’s funny to force people to do things they think are morally wrong, I’d say they did. But if you do what’s right, then no. You don’t.”

“Have I?” Brendon asked, suddenly worried about something he had never cared about, at least not since he was a little Mormon human boy.

Pete snorted. “Have you?” he asked. “You need to figure that out for yourself.”

“So what should I do about...that boy? He cries every time he kills somebody. I don’t know what to do,” Brendon explained.

Pete’s expression softened and he looked really sad. “I guess try and find Patrick and ask him.”

Brendon nodded and went to leave.

”He cries every time?” Pete asked, which made Brendon stop in his tracks.

“Yeah,” Brendon said.

Pete smiled sadly. “He sounds like a really nice boy.”

“I just made a mistake. I just wanted to kiss him. I thought I could handle it,” Brendon said, feeling guilty again.

“Yeah. It sucks when you fall in love with a human,” Pete said, and Brendon realized Pete said it like he actually knew. Like he had actually fallen in love with a human once.

There was a moment of silence before Pete asked, “What’s his name?”

“Ryan,” Brendon said.

“I’m sure it’ll work out for you and him,” Pete said. “But not if you let yourself lose your soul. You need to think about it, Brendon. Do you think William’s really on your side? Do you think it’s really right to kill humans?”

Brendon didn’t say anything and just walked out of the room.

But deep inside, he thought about it.

Brendon never did manage to find out where Patrick was, although he usually tried looking for him a while after he was out with Ryan. It never proved to effective as Brendon had a very short attention span and usually ended up just giving up to go to sleep or talk to Spencer about something dumb instead.

Therefore, things continued pretty much the same as they had before for a while. Everything changed, however, one night.

Brendon was in his room colouring on a pretty princess colouring book (one Spencer always made fun of, but hey, it was fun!) when Spencer came into Brendon’s room completely unannounced. Brendon could tell something was wrong immediately by his expression.

“Brendon. They found him,” Spencer said, more serious than Brendon had ever heard him before.

“What?” Brendon demanded, jumping up from his desk and forgetting all about the pretty princesses. “How?”

“Apparently he was out hunting,” Spencer said. “They don’t know it’s you yet, Ryan’s acting like he has no idea, but I’m sure it won’t be long until William gets it out of him.”

“What should I do?” Brendon asked. “What can I do?”

“Maybe if you’re fast enough you can manage to get him out of here. Act all confused or flirt with William or something and distract him. Then get Ryan and run,” Spencer suggested with a shrug, trying to put his I’m-Spencer-Smith-And-I-Don’t-Care-About-Anything act back on. “I guess that’s the best you can do.”

Brendon nodded. “Alright. So I guess...this is goodbye?”

“For now,” Spencer said. “I’ll meet up with you later. Get your clothes and pretty princess colouring books for you.” He was smirking, and Brendon would’ve said something smart back if he hadn’t been so worried. “Good luck,” Spencer added. Brendon nodded and decided that, rather than drag this on longer, that he should just go do it.

He left the room and walked down the many hallways of William’s massive mansion/borderline castle thing he had towards the main room. William almost definitely would have Ryan in there if he had just been found out.

When Brendon walked in the main room he saw that William and Ryan were indeed in there, along with two of William’s top vampires. Brendon actually calmed down a little, glad there were only two extra, and finally thinking that maybe he could handle this.

They all looked at him when he walked in, and Ryan, who had previously looked terrified, suddenly looked considerably less scared.

William noticed this- he wasn’t the vampire leader for no reason, of course- and then smirked and said, mockingly, “Brendon. Brendon, Brendon, Brendon. I never would’ve guessed. Didn’t think you had it in you. You turned him and kept him a secret for...how long? A month?”

“Two,” Brendon said, trying to sound confident.

William shook his head, mock-mournfully, and sighed. “How could you betray me like that, Brenny? You know that’s now allowed.”

“I couldn’t just kill him!” Brendon said, deciding that playing on his cute- and apparently stupid- image would probably work a little better than trying to seem brave. “I got attached. I’m sorry.”

William smiled. “Well, it’s a shame. I’ll have to kill him for you.”

Ryan looked scared again.

“But...but couldn’t you keep him alive? For me?” Brendon asked, pouting a little and trying to say in a kind of flirty way. (Hey, if Spencer suggested something, it was usually the way to go.) He walked over closer to William as he spoke and batted his eyes at William all flirty. He couldn’t help but noticed that it made Ryan send him a glare, despite how scared the kid currently was.

“Aw, love, you know I can’t,” William said. “Besides, why do you need him? You could have me.”

Brendon pretended to look like he was actually considering it and then, in a second, he took the final step closer and sunk his teeth into William’s arm.

As he bit him he heard a jangle of keys and realized it was William’s keys- the ones that he used for everything, including the dungeon. And when Brendon saw the flash of silver, he decided that if he was going to be in trouble with William he might has well get somebody who had been against William before and could possibly help him. So he grabbed the keys as he pulled his teeth out of William. He then grabbed Ryan’s arm and pulled him into the hallway before any of the vampires could stop him.

“Oh my god, Brendon. Thank you so much. I thought I was going to die!” Ryan exclaimed.

“You almost did. You still could. Come on, we have to get out of here,” Brendon said, pulling Ryan along as he ran to William’s creepy dungeons. He was trying to figure out how to get Pete free and still manage to make their way out safely.

He found the stairway to the dungeon and quickly started down them. Ryan seemed confused and asked, “Is there like a secret underground tunnel or something? Because this doesn’t look like the way out...”

Brendon grinned. That was exactly it. There was an underground tunnel. Maybe they could make it out after all.

“Yeah, but we have to get Pete first,” Brendon said, pulling Ryan faster as they reached the bottom of the stairs and Brendon found his way through all the hallways.

“Pete?” Ryan asked. “Who’s Pete?”

“Vampire hunter. And vampire himself. I got William’s keys and figured I could free him and have him help us,” Brendon explained.

“Oh. Why didn’t William just kill him if he’s a vampire hunter?” Ryan asked.

“I guess he finds it more fun to torture him,” Brendon said. He found the room where Pete was and ran in.

Pete jumped up from where he had been sitting on the floor in surprise. Then he noticed Ryan and gasped. “Fuck. Wow. He...you’re trying to escape, aren’t you?”

“Yeah,” Brendon said, unlocking the bars of Pete’s cell. “Come on. You’re coming with us.”

Pete nodded but then stopped right outside of the bars. “But we have to find Patrick. Do you know where he is?”

Brendon shook his head. “I couldn’t find him.”

“We need to look for him! I’m not leaving with out him,” Pete said.

Brendon rolled his eyes. “Come on. We don’t have time.”

“We have to get Patrick,” Pete insisted.

“I’m leaving. If you don’t come along, they’ll just lock you back up again,” Brendon said. “We don’t have time.” Then he left the room and started down the hallways. Ryan followed right behind him and Pete stayed a couple feet back from them.

They came to a intersection of halls. One way was right to the tunnel. The other was to the other cells. Brendon knew what was going to happen, and he really needed Pete’s help, so he stopped at the intersection.

“Well, I guess I’m getting locked up again, because I’m not leaving without Patrick,” Pete said determinedly.

“Don’t be stupid. If we get out, we can come back for him sometime,” Brendon said.

Pete rolled his eyes. “No we fucking can’t. We’d have to be half-retarded to come back here.”

“And you would have to be to stay,” Brendon agreed. “Come on.”

“No,” Pete said.

Brendon sighed. “Pete! Seriously!”

“Not without Patrick,” he said, and started down the hallway towards the cells. Right at that moment, however, two of William’s vampires turned a corner and walked right into that hallway and saw them. They ran down the hallway towards Pete. Pete quickly leaped towards them, kicking the one in the stomach. He grabbed the other one’s hair and threw him to the ground. “I have to get Patrick!” he said, and continued down the hallway.

”He’s dead,” Brendon said, acting on instinct, hoping that would get him to come with them.

”What?” Pete demanded. He stopped immediately and turned to Brendon.

“He’s dead. I didn’t want to tell you, but I looked for him, and it turns out they just killed him. My friend Spencer told me,” Brendon said. “Come on, we have to go!”

“No! I’m going to kill them! I’m going to kill William!” Pete said.

”Look, we can come back, fight them. You can get your revenge or whatever. But you don’t have a chance right now. You don’t even have a stake,” Brendon said.

One of the vampires who had been on the ground got back up again and went to attack Pete. Pete punched him in the face and ran over to Brendon and Ryan.

”Alright,” Pete said. “But we’re coming back. I’m going to kill that bastard for killing Patrick.”

“Sure,” Brendon agreed, just glad that they could leave.

They ran down a few more hallways and made it out into the streets.

“It’s almost daylight,” Ryan said worriedly.

Pete rolled his eyes. “I have a place we can stay that they won’t find us, come on,” he said, and started down the street. Brendon and Ryan followed him, just glad to be safe.
