Brendon was so surprised, so caught off guard that he stood there frozen for a second until Gray bit his lip. She gave him a look that clearly meant for him to kiss back and so he did. His lips against hers, their breathing in unison, the sensation shooting through his body came so natural and so wonderfully habitual, it was like something out of a dream.
“Hey, what are you to kids doing?” the officer had stopped. Knowing what the girl pinned in front of him expected, Brendon answered.
“Sorry officer,” He chuckled “its our anniversary.” Brendon looked back at Gray who had her face hidden.
“It’s alright. Just keep the pda’s to a minimum.”
“Will do officer, thanks.” And with that he drove away while Gray’s whole body that had just a second earlier been tensed against the wall relaxed.
“What the fuck was that about?!” Brendon had turned back to Gray. She didn’t answer for a minute but when she finally spoke up her voice was shaky and unconvincing.
“Sorry, sometime I just can’t control myself.” She offered a weak smile and Brendon heart skipped, he knew that smile. Was it? Could it really be? There was obviously something different, something wrong but Brendon had to be sure.
“So… I think my saving your ass from whatever the hell that was warrants you telling me your real name.” The look she gave him was of complete disbelief. She stared at him for a few seconds and then spoke, her voice still a little unsteady.
“Gray… Kendel.” She looked stunned that she had said it. Like it was some swear word that should never be uttered aloud.
“That,” Brendon said with a sigh, “I believe.” Brendon looked into the eyes he had tried so hard to forget, to bury in the back of his mind. He knew who she was and all the pain that accompanied her two words almost made Brendon wish he didn’t.
“Sorry” She started walking again, back the way they had come. This time Gray walked slower as though she dreaded going back to the place she was headed. Head hung low and dragging her feet a little, She tried to hide her face. The look of pain-filled remembrance plastered across it unable to be hidden.
“Gray were are you going?” Brendon started after her but before he had taken two steps towards her she had stopped and faced him once more.
“Look,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes “I appreciate what you just did, it helped more than you know but just leave me alone. Trust me its better for you if I go away.” The tears that had been threatening to spill over now running down her face.
“Go were? Where do you have to go?” Brendon ask curiously. He did not expect what happened next.
“NOWHERE! I have nowhere to go all right! No house, no family, no one who cares about me! I’m alone and you can’t change that.” She was standing there sobbing. Brendon had never seen her look so broken, so vulnerable, so beautiful. Two steps forward and he had wrapped his arms around her. At first she pulled away, beating at his chest screaming for him to let her go but he didn’t. Brendon just held her tighter as the fists being thrown at his chest lost more and more power until the lay still against his pounding heart, until they embraced him in their warmth.
“I still care.”
