Pete goes off on his own for a little while, and even though William Beckett and his "coven" are gone, is it safe to walk alone at night?
1Exciting
Pete sighed as he walked through the park, needing some alone time, and he knew Patrick would rest easier since there were no longer Dandies for him to have to worry about. He stared at the ground as his chest throbbed painfully, no matter how hard he tried to push away the emotional tugging at his heart. Today was a day that he had once had parties on, celebrated with his family on, to mark another year. It was Andrew’s birthday, and his negative mind kept giving him pictures of a happy Andrew, who was happy because he was pretending Pete wasn’t in his life anymore. It made his chest hurt more as he realized once more that he wouldn’t tell his brother happy birthday again, not in a way that he would hear him anyway. To this day he regretted that Andrew had ever found out he had been turned, even though it wasn’t some traumatic experience.
Andrew had pushed him away after he told him, needing to tell his brother that he hadn’t done anything wrong to make Pete ignore him, he was just pushing his family away so he wouldn’t hurt them as bad when he found a new place to live. Andrew had come to Pete, upset that his brother, who he had always been close to, was pushing him away and he didn’t know if he had done something to upset him. He tried telling him that he had just been in a mood lately, but his brother didn’t buy it.
He frowned at the memory of his brother’s eyes, staring at him with such hate, as he told Pete that he wouldn’t tell anyone, but he wouldn’t have anything to do with him. Andrew had recently lost a good friend to a vampire, and now Pete was one of the things that he hated. Brother or not, Pete was now dead to him. He swallowed hard as he buried his hands in his hoodie pockets, trying to push the memories from his head as he stopping walking long enough to take a look around.
Without even realizing it he had made his way to the spot where the fight had taken place, where Joe had let himself be attacked to go along with the act of Deacon losing everything at the compound. He leaned against he tree he was near and pushed his hood back, running his fingers through his hair with a heavy sigh that seemed to ease the pressure in his chest.
He heard a small noise off to his right and quietly sniffed the air, not daring to look up and acknowledge that he had heard anything. If he was being watched he didn’t want the one, or ones, watching him to know they had his attention. Three humans, and two vampires was what he smelled, and it drew on his curiosity since the humans seemed to have not caught on to what they were with yet. Unless of course that was the plan.
They moved closer, but they were keeping their movements as hushed as they could, and he half wished he had one of the others on him, but he had other protection in case. Patrick hadn’t let him leave the house without a small gun, already loaded with mercury bullets, since they worked on both humans and vampires. Humans just didn’t feel the same pain from the mercury as the vampires did, their pain coming from the bullet itself shattering inside of them. He focused on them, noting that they were indeed moving closer, and he could hear faint whispering but it was too low, probably from one of the vampires, for him to hear.
He heard the sound of a stake sliding from the belt and turned his back as he began walking away from them, not in the mood to fight as he decided he wouldn’t even give one at the moment. His movements stopped short, and he growled, when a stake collided with his shoulder, the tip sticking out the front of his shirt. He dodged another, that he had heard coming at him from another one of the hunters, and ripped out the stake that was currently in his shoulder before he tossed it to the ground. He leapt up into the tree tops and moved around, masking his sounds and scent with the tricks that Aubrey and Sabine had taught him, until he found a spot he could watch the hunters from.
“You fucking lost him!” The taller of the two female humans exclaimed at the shorter female as the male and the two vampires, both men, came closer. “Why do we even bring you along!?”
“Wen, calm down,” purred one of the male vampires as he moved to her and put his hand on her shoulder. “We bring her because normally she’s a dead on shot, you know this.”
The other male turned his head slightly, titling it to the side as he watched the two, but his attention wasn’t on them, he was searching for Pete. “Yeah, Wen, don’t take it out on her,” he said softly, his voice ringing out in the silence. “Besides, we’ll catch someone tonight, you know it as much as I do. We kill at least one a night.”
Pete frowned as he wondered why a vampire would go out killing other vampires, wondering if their reason was the same as his own, or if they had other motives. He adjusted himself, being careful of noise, even though he has all sounds masked, and tried to get a better look at the taller one, wondering why she sounded so familiar.
“This is one less we could have killed though!” She growled out, narrowing her eyes at the vampire who slowly removed his hand from her shoulder and gave her a small smile.
“Wen,” he whispered, loud enough for her human ears to hear, and leaned in, kissing her softly, breaking through her icy exterior to make her smile. “We’ll get three more to make up for that one, would that make you happy?”
The one dubbed “Wen” nodded and stepped away from him when the other vampire made a noise, turning her attention to him. She lifted a slender brow when he lifted his brow and glanced off to the side, in a movement Pete hadn’t caught because he was still trying to see if he could recognize “Wen”.
She turned her head slightly and looked at the one who had kissed her. “Nate, we should get going if we want to catch any vampires tonight,” she said as she moved to him and slid her arm around his waist. “Before the birds start singing.”
Before Pete knew it, the other male vampire was up on the branch with him, pushing him off and slamming into the ground with him, dazing him for a moment before he quickly pushed him off and jumped to his feet. He heard the stake before he saw it, but he still caught it and tossed it off to the side, too far away for the humans to run and retrieve for a quick attack. When the two males came at him, the human male pulled two stakes from the belt around his waist and threw them at him.
He took one in the other shoulder, not caring as pain erupted in his shoulder as he dodged the two vampires and rushed at the taller girl. His arm wrapped tightly around her as he grabbed hold of her and aimed the gun, that he had taken from under his shirt and hoodie, at her head. Curling his lips back and exposing his fangs at the other vampires, he held her tighter when she struggled against him. “Stop thrashing or I’ll pull the fucking trigger,” he growled softly under his breath, keeping his eyes on one the who had kissed her, Nate, as his eyes went black from his rage. “Tell him to stay where he his, I don’t think he’ll listen to me.”
“Nate, don’t move,” she said softly as she stared at him. She gave him a reassuring nod as he tensed his body, his fangs exposed at Pete as a feral growl ripped through him, shocking the two other humans and the fellow vampire with the group. “What do you want?”
“I don’t want to harm any of you,” Pete replied, “I want alone time, but a pack of pretend hunters interrupted it.”
“Hey! We are hunters!” Cried out the male human that had a gun aimed at Pete. A quick smell of the air verified that it wasn’t mercury bullets and wouldn’t do that much harm.
“You call yourselves hunters!?” He gave a bitter laugh. “I’ve seen and done better myself!”
The other male, the vampire that had found him in his hiding spot, took a step forward and Pete cocked the gun, making him take a step back.
“You’re a vampire, you don’t deserve alone time, unless you’re rotting in the sun!” Growled out “Wen” as she turned her head slightly, pressing the gun further into her temple. “You should be dead.”
“Says the human girl who is hanging out with two vampires, even kissing one… Why haven’t you killed him?”
“He didn’t have a choice,“ she snapped.
“Neither did I,“ he growled out. He uncocked the gun as he looked at the little bit of her face that he could see. His eyes widened and he let go of her, gently pushing her away with shock written all over his face, her own face matching his when she turned to face him, ready to kill the vampire. “H-Hilary…?”
Hilary stared at her lost brother in shock as she realized why he had let her go. She heard Nate and Salcido move, but she put up her hand, stopping them since they both listened to her, as she studied her brother, who hadn’t changed much since she last saw him. “We’re not killing him,” she whispered softly as her chest tightened with the renewed pain of him leaving without even saying goodbye to her or the others.
“Why not!?” Nate demanded as he looked from Hilary to the vampire who suddenly looked weak as pain etched its way into his features.
“I can’t kill my brother…”
