Rayne opened her eyes to the dimly lit room that Gabe had brought her to so that she could get her rest. Hesitantly, she brought her hand to the left side of her neck, where some sort of mark should have been, but found only smooth skin. As she sat up, she glanced around the room, memories of what happened slowly filtering into her mind as she realized things seemed to look clearer to her. A soft knock on the door, made her look at it. “Come in?”

When the door opened and Gabe walked in, he gave her a small smile as he shut the door and walked over to her, leaning on one of the posts on the bed. “How do you feel?” He asked as she put her back to the headboard, resting against it.

“Oddly I feel just fine,” she answered as she studied the man before her. “Where am I?”

“You’re at my home, where I brought you when I found that lowlife feeding from you,” he answered. “Do you mind if I sit on the bed?”

Rayne shook her head. “It’s your bed,” she answered.

Gabe smiled. “You could say no,” he offered as he sat down, facing her with one leg tucked under the other. “So, can I ask what your name is?”

“Rayne,” she answered. “Rayne Mercado.”

“It’s nice to meet you Rayne,” Gabe said as he nodded his head. “it sucks that it was like this that we met though. I’m sorry for what happened to you, and I want to offer to make things as good for you as I can, given your situation.”

“What situation?” She asked, her whole body suddenly alert and tense.

“Obviously when I mentioned vampires you didn’t flinch or act surprised they actually exist, so that makes this a bit easier already…” Gabe bit his lip for a moment as she stared at him, her eyes studying his face as she tried to brace herself for whatever he was about to tell her. “Rayne, I hate to tell you this, but by the time I got to you, you were dying. The only thing I could do to save you, was to finish turning you.”

“Finish turning me?” Rayne questioned, her voice barely a whisper.

“You see, when a vampire bites someone, a change starts inside them, making them turn into one of us,” he explained, pausing to figure out how to word the rest of what she needed to know. “If the bitten person doesn’t feed, they never fully turn, they just go around living for a little bit longer than a human, but still with the ability to die. They can eat and drink other things, but the only thing that will really satisfy the hunger is to drink blood, and when not fully turned, the hunger can be torture… But if you feed, you become a full vampire.”

“Why couldn’t you let it work through?”

“You would have died before it did,” he answered, frowning. “I would have let it if I could, but you said I could help you, and this was the only way to help you.”

Rayne looked down at her hands as she worked on absorbing what all Gabe had just told her. “Is there any going back?”

“Not from this point,” he replied. “You could go on and live the way you used to, but you would have to be careful around sunlight and certain other things. And you could only live around the ones you did before for so long, until they notice you’re not showing signs of aging, your social hours have changed…”

“That would only last a couple of years, wouldn’t it? Maybe ten, max?” A nod from Gabe confirmed her thoughts. “What do I do from there? I guess I have long enough to work towards getting things prepared from there?”

“Do you have a job?”

Rayne nodded. “Well, I did… Unless I can come up with a damn good excuse as to why I didn’t call and just didn’t show up. If I can keep it, then yeah, I do have a job.”

“What happens if you can’t keep it?”

Rayne gave him a questioning look, wondering why he was asking all these questions. “I’ll have to find one as soon as possible so I can keep my apartment.”

“Rayne, I feel bad for what happened, like I should have gotten there sooner, can I make it up to you?”

“How could you do that?” She questioned, tilting her head slightly as he got up from bed and grab a slow pacing.

“How good are you at getting information? Keeping secrets?” Gabe asked, looking at her as he continued his slow pace.

“I can get any information I need,” she answered as she adjusted in her spot. “Secrets follow me to the grave.”

“Then I have a job for you,” he smiled, “and pays a lot more in a week than you probably make in a month.”

Rayne ran her fingers through her hair as she stared at the computer screen at her old friend, knowing that if she let herself do so, she would be crying for the loss. But she never knew who could walk through her doors and see her in the weak state. It was her strong façade, that Gabe had helped her perfect that kept vampires and humans from trying to attack her for the information she had. When everyone around thought that nothing phased you, how could they threaten you?

She closed the file after changing his status from “Vampire: Alive” to “Vampire: Deceased”, and turned off her computer, resting her head on the desk. She didn’t have her head down long before her cell phone went off, and Pete’s name flashed over and over on the screen. Reaching over, she sat up as she picked up her phone and pressed the answer key.

“Rayne speaking.”

“Rayne, normally I wouldn’t ask this of you, but I need you to come to the new compound, as soon as possible,” Pete’s voice came over the line. “It’s urgent.”

“I can make it,” she answered, “give me fifteen max.”
