Dazed, disoriented, confused… This was how Rayne felt as she stared at her computer’s screen at the picture, and file, of Gabe Saporta, who was now dead. Dead… She thought, her eyes going to her computer desk. How could he be dead? She frowned deeper as she rose her eyes back to the computer screen at the picture of her long time friend, the one who saved her life.

Over and over again, Rayne was mentally kicking her own ass as she walked the streets at night on her way home. It was pouring down rain, her cab had never showed up, and on the long walk home she hadn’t seen any cabs so that she could hail one down. At work one of the guys, who was always pestering her to get into her pants, had offered her a ride home, but, not wanting him to think he had a chance with her, she said she had a ride and when he was gone, called her missing cab. Now, in the pouring down rain, she was beginning to think she should have just taken said ride.

“He’s probably off somewhere doing a fucking line,” she grumbled bitterly, having seen him wipe some remnants from his nose before.

She stopped in her tracks when she saw someone standing in the sidewalk, just out from under the beam of the lamp post, some distance away. Normally she would have just kept walking, wouldn’t have stopped, but he was just standing there, blatantly staring at her. All she could tell was that he was facing her, so maybe he was staring behind her, but she still didn’t like the way he was just watching her.

A nagging feeling began in the back of her head, growing more and more vocal to run as she and the mystery man stared each other down through the rain and darkness. She tensed when he took a step into the light for the briefest of moments, barely revealing anything before he disappeared, leaving her staring at nothingness.

As if it was even possible, the falling water came down faster and harder, making it even harder to see where the man in the shadows had been. No longer caring that it was pouring down rain, or that she might slip and fall on the water-covered sidewalk, she began walking again. But, she slowly broke into a small jog, knowing she could get to her apartment a little faster, and if she had to run, she could haul ass from a jogging point.

She did the math in her head, and if she only jogged the rest of the way, she was still looking at thirty minutes until she got home, twenty minutes if she ran as fast as humanly possible for her. She couldn’t help but wonder, if some guy was chasing her, and wouldn’t stop, could she run the whole way to her apartment and managed to avoid getting caught?

She wouldn’t let any of the recent city rumors enter her head though, about the ones that had been hunting down anyone they could, and then either killing them, or taking them. It wasn’t in her rational thinking to allow those thoughts, or fears, to enter her head as she continued with her jog. The thoughts entered her head, however, when a hand began to close around her wrist, triggering her to break into her a run, her legs moving as fast as she could make them.

She heard the footsteps give chase, followed by male laughter, but after several minutes of chasing after her, she heard them die down behind her, but she didn’t dare stop running. She didn’t stop running until she was in her complex, had her keys out of her pocket, and was putting the key into the doorknob. She let out a short, startled scream that was cut off by the hand that went over her mouth, when an arm quickly went around her waist and held tight.

“Sorry dear,” whispered a male voice by her ear, causing her to struggle against the man. She knew if she could get into her apartment and call the cops, all she would have to do is hold the shut closed with her locks, and body, and she would be safe. “I didn’t mean to make you think you were going to make it out alive, but I do love the chase and their despair.”

A hard hit to the side of her head was the last thing Rayne felt before black surrounded her vision and the ground became her friend.

When she came to, she could barely move, she couldn’t even get her eyes to open with how weak she felt. It didn’t take long for her brain to register the severe pain in her neck, and the body on top of hers, holding her down. She managed a soft whimper, that caused the body above her to pause, momentarily, before biting down harder, chuckling when another whimper came from her. A tear leaked from the corner of her eye as he bite down harder again.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t wake up while I was killing you,”
came the voice in her head. “But at the same time, I could enjoy your pain.”

Rayne felt the mouth on her neck pull into a smirk before a growl vibrated against her skin. Soon the mouth was gone, as was the body, and a horrible scream filled the air, followed by a noise that some part of Rayne’s mind knew she didn’t want to know the source of. Before she could register the gentle arms that slid underneath her and then lifted her up, her consciousness left her once more.

Rayne woke once more, much to her own surprise, when she felt some pain in the side of her neck as someone touched and gently explored the bite on her neck. Her soft whimper, drew the attention of the two vampires to her as one moved to be by her head, and leaned down.

“Don’t panic, miss,” whispered a velvety-smooth voice as a hand softly stroked her hair, “Ryland and I don’t want to hurt you, we want to help you. But you don’t have much longer for us to help you, so I have a question, and I need you to answer. Do you want us to help you?”

Rayne managed a small nod, almost unnoticeable, and tried to say yes, but again she found herself faced with the dilemma of still being too weak to do anything.

“Ryland, start work on that bite mark,” the voice urged as something wet came to rest over Rayne’s lips. “I know you won’t like the taste, but you need to drink what I’m trying to give you. I need you to trust me.”

Slowly her mouth was opened by a gentle hand, and the liquid began to pour slowly into her mouth. She surprised herself by finding the energy to swallow the liquid that tasted as copper smelled, but she did so, slowly.

“There you go,” whispered the voice as the hand returned to her hair, and the faint pain in her neck returned, making her whimper. “Shh, it’s going to hurt until this helps you, hon. Now that we’ve got you taken care of, my name is Gabe, I saved you from the vampire that was killing you. My friend, the one that is making sure you’ll have no scars where you were bitten, his name is Ryland, as I said earlier. Remember, when you have your strength back, I need you to trust us. Can you do that for me?”

Finding herself, feeling a little bit stronger, she nodded, but was careful about knocking away whatever was pressed against her mouth. She continued to slowly drink what was given to her until she felt it pull away. Slowly, Rayne opened her eyes and when they focused, she looked at the man to her right, who gave her a small smile as he continued his slow stroking of her hair.

“Feeling a little bit better?” He questioned, smiling more when she gave a small nod and Ryland moved away from her neck, looking at her.

“That should do it,” Ryland declared as he took off his gloves and tossed them in the trash.

Clearing her throat slightly, Rayne opened her mouth to begin to speak, but Gabe shook his head. “Not yet, hon, just rest. This time when you fall asleep, you’ll wake up feeling much better. No one is going to hurt you here you’re safe.”
